Issues concerning caregiving behavior in attachment theory have been overlooked, even though it is an essential factor of the theory. In this paper, we reviewed previous studies on caregiving to explore why there is a lack of research and to determine future directions. To begin, based on research pertaining to parent-child relationships and intimate adult relationships, we defined caregiving in the context of attachment theory. In addition, we outlined the idea of a behavioral system and an internal work model (IWM) that can become a basis of research, or a process of formation and development of the caregiving system and the IWM, including the problems to be investigated in future studies. Then, some problems in the research of intergenerational transmission of attachment and intimate adult relationships were suggested as the reason why the research on caregiving behavior has been delayed in attachment theory. Moreover, it was also indicated that the proximate occurrence mechanism of caregiving behavior was not clarified as a cause. We suggest a new model and some future directions.

<p>The Caregiving System Scale (CSS: Shaver, Mikulincer, & Shemesh-Iron, 2010) was recently developed measure designed to assess the individual differences in the caregiving internal working model. The purpose of the present study was to translate the CSS into Japanese (CSS-J) and evaluate its validity and reliability. To accomplish this, we conducted four studies. In Study 1 (<i>n</i> = 600), we translated the CSS and replicated its two-factor model based on confirmatory factor analysis. After that, in Study 2 (<i>n</i> = 315), we examined the correlations between the CSS and other variables for criterion-related validation. In Study 3 (<i>n</i> = 229), we determined that previous helping success or failure experiences influenced a person's current anxiety and avoidance levels, as measured by the CSS-J. In Study 4 (<i>n</i> = 31), we examined the test-retest reliability of the CSS-J among some participants from Study 3. The results of these four studies confirmed the validity and reliability of the CSS-J. We concluded that the CSS-J is useful for studying the various aspects of helping and attachment theory.</p>

本研究の目的は恋愛関係における自分磨き(self-improvement)に対する相互影響性を検討することである。アタッチメント理論に依拠して,恋愛関係にある参加者に対して,アタッチメントとケアギビングの傾向を測定し,Actor Partner Interdependence Model (APIM)の枠組みで分析を行った。結果より,アタッチメント回避が自身の自分磨きの成果に与える影響に加え,アタッチメントとケアギビングが相手の自分磨きの成果に与える影響がいくつか示された。さらに,女性の自分磨きの成果に対しては,女性のアタッチメント回避と男性のケアギビング過活性の交互作用効果も示された。したがって,恋愛関係においては,自分磨きの成果は男女のアタッチメントとケアギビングの相互的な影響によって規定されると考えられる。
