The purpose of the present study was to examine whether art students would evaluate paintings based on the economic dimension of value (EDV). Art students (N = 193) were asked to rate 14 paintings (including seven good arts and seven bad arts selected from the Museum of Bad Art) on four scales of aesthetic evaluation. They were also asked to complete a questionnaire assessing their degree of the EDV. The results demonstrated that the EDV was related to aesthetic evaluations for both good and bad arts. These results suggest that art students with the high EDV appreciate paintings based on the EDV and focus on whether paintings would be sold.

Several studies have reported the factors which determine individual differences in aesthetic evaluations of visual arts. Our previous studies suggested that the aesthetic dimension of value (ADV) was a crucial factor relating to the individual differences in aesthetic evaluations. However, the paintings used in our previous studies were selected from the masterpieces painted by famous artists. The present study explored whether the ADV would relate to aesthetic evaluations for both good and bad arts. Undergraduates (N = 166) were asked to rate 14 paintings (including seven good arts and seven bad arts selected from the Museum of Bad Art) on four scales of aesthetic evaluation and to complete a questionnaire assessing their degree of the ADV. The results demonstrated that the ADV related to aesthetic evaluations for both good and bad arts. These results suggest that the ADV related to the subjective value of the paintings regardless of their reputation.

Miyashita, Kimura, & Oka (2017) demonstrated that openness in the big-five personality traits did not relate to aesthetic evaluations of paintings while the aesthetic dimension of value did. Conversely, previous studies showed that openness affects preferences for specific artistic paintings after predicting general preferences as a latent variable. Thus, the present study explored whether openness would affect aesthetic evaluation of paintings via mediating variable (i.e., aesthetic dimension of value). In our survey, 323 undergraduates were asked to evaluate 24 paintings using 4 scales of aesthetic evaluation. They were also asked to complete a questionnaire assessing their degrees of openness and the aesthetic dimension of value. Results demonstrated that openness did not directly relate to aesthetic evaluations of paintings but that it indirectly related to those via the aesthetic dimension of value. These results suggest that the aesthetic dimension of value relates to openness as a mediator of aesthetic evaluations.
