Emotional state before sleep affects the subsequent sleep onset. The purpose of this study was to investigate how positive/negative emotion before sleep effected hypnagogic state. The movies eliciting positive or negative emotion were presented before sleep. Hypnagogic imagery was recorded as a probe of emotional experience and EEG microstate analysis was used for finding the emotion related EEG activities. The score of emotion ratings for hypnagogic imagery indicated that positive emotion was reported in not only positive condition but also in negative condition. This implied that hypnagogic state might be accompanied by positive emotion. Comparing the appearance of maps obtained from microstate analysis between conditions, the map of right temporal activity was significantly greater in positive condition while the map of the left frontal activity was greater negative condition. These results suggested that the emotion not just in presleep but also in hypnagogic state was involved in sleep onset process.

This paper describes linguistic features of generally unreadable person names, which are defined as “KIRAKIRA names,” and proposes a method to detect KIRAKIRA names based on the features. Through the discussions, the following eight features are founded as the linguistic features of KIRAKIRA names: 1) Too many Kanji characters, 2) Too many syllables, 3) Multiple usage of a common Kanji character, 4) Kanji variants are used, 5) The pronunciation of Kanji is generally unknown, 6) Too many stroke count for Kanji, 7) Mismatching of gender between a person and the name, and 8) The pronunciation of name equals an imported word. Based on the features, KIRAKIRA names are automatically detected by using Support Vector Machine. The experiments to detect KIRAKIRA names were conducted for 10,000 names. The results of the experiments showed 81.79% accuracy, 76.89% precision, and 91.84% recall.

In order to increase the number of videos playback, we researched on the thumbnail images and the titles which were selected by the viewers. We built the samples and conducted the questionnaires in order to reveal the factors that make a great influence on the evaluation and be clear about the positive levels. We revealed the viewers decide the videos under the influence of the images rather than sentences and words. Also, Images factors are particularly effective for males. On the other hand, females are more affected by sentences and words than males. This research revealed the guidelines that YouTuber creates thumbnail images and titles and the elements to incorporate according to the target the males or the females. As a starting point of this research, we will be able to conduct more detailed research on thumbnail images and titles.

We examined how changes in participants' heart rate affect their estimation of time when listening to music. We manipulated participants' heart rate using a cycling task on an exercise bike and by varying the tempo of music. The heart rates of 48 participants were measured before and after the pedaling task on the exercise bike. One week later, they listened to the music and estimated the temporal duration (60 seconds) under the non-manipulated condition (without exercise) and heart rate manipulated condition (with exercise). The results showed that the duration of the music (60 seconds) was underestimated after light exercise and overestimated after strenuous exercise. These results suggest that the acceleration of the internal time mechanism due to an increase in the heart rate affects the perceived duration of time with relation to music.

Food quality is often considered to be the only defining factor of food value. In this study, another important aspect of food value is discussed: the social relationships which are commonly fostered by food. The latent value of curry roux for home use was investigated by studying behavior specific to eating curry. It was found that synchronization of spoons (including spoon and chopsticks) per meal time to be an indicator. It is well known that synchronization occurs when empathizing with others, suggesting that creating empathies with others during a meal is the latent value of curry. Also, text data analysis showed that curry is eaten with special and similar positive feelings by home cook and eater, compared to the other meals. These behavioral and psychological specificity supports the creation of empathy by curry.

Plastic surgeons create of external noses based on their kansei. The outcome of the rhinoplasty depends on the surgeons' technique and artistic sense. We consider that reconstructing an external nose by using a template would solve the inconsistency of the outcome. However, there are few studies about curves of outlines of external noses. Thus, the aims of our study were to analyze curves of outlines of external noses of 84 normal subjects and to classify the curves in order to create templates as a guide for total nasal reconstruction. Concretely, we took photographs of 84 subjects' external noses and abstracted the curves of their profile outlines of external noses from the photographs by image processing. Next, we analyzed characteristics of the curves by using those profiles of curvature and classified the curves into 5 types of curves. Lastly we made innovative 380 (= 5 types × 76 sizes) nose templates based on our study in order to express the individual subtle differences of the reconstructed new nose.

For the purpose of providing information for the apparel field, the effects of changing the pleat number and skirt length on the visual image of 30 types of pleated skirts by age group were analyzed. The major results are as follows. Changes in the pleat number and skirt length were strongly related to the visual image of pleated skirts; the more pleats there are, the more complicated, dressy and feminine they look, while the fewer pleats there are, the more calm and plain they are regarded. In addition, it was revealed that the shorter the skirts are, the more casual, childlike and simple they look, while the longer they are, the more formal, heavy, mature and luxurious they appeared. Image changes were much more significant for the skirt length than they were for the number of pleats, while for age groups, the number of pleats accounted for much larger differences in visual image than the skirt length. In particular, compared to other age groups, there was a significant difference in image scores for subjects aged 10 to 19 for skirts that were uncommon, and for subjects in their 50s for skirts that gave them a sophisticated and charming image. As a result of principal component analysis, it is considered that the 1st principal component analysis (PC1) largely contributes to an element expressing sensitive fashion image based on expression, while PC2 contributes to the age factor based on activity. However, it was revealed that the items which strongly influence the major components are different by age, as are the items which determine the image of pleated skirts.

“Kawaii” is a Japanese word that represents a kansei value; it has positive meanings, such as cute, lovable, and small. In this article, we introduce our trials to measure kawaii feeling, a positive and dynamic feeling that occurs when “kawaii” stimulus is presented, by examining biological signals. The stimulus was presented as a screen with a colored surface in the first experiment, and as a virtual object of a certain size in the second experiment. The average heart rate obtained in these experiments indicated a significant difference between “kawaii” stimuli and “non-kawaii” stimuli, suggesting that the mental state while watching “kawaii” stimuli is more active than that while watching “non-kawaii” stimuli.

Ultra-high definition (4K) imaging allows us to achieve considerably higher image quality than would high definition (HD) imaging. The present study examined how 4K and HD imaging could influence subjective impressions of movies differently, in association with the quantities of motion and fields of view of these movies. We found that stronger impressions regarding comfort and impact were evoked for 4K movies with smaller quantities of motion and medium field of view. Stronger perceptions of impact occurred for HD movies with larger quantities of motion and larger field of view. HD movies also gave stronger impression regarding dynamics regardless of motion quantities. Additionally, HD movies down-converted from 4K movies tended to induce higher impressions regarding evaluation and comfort in some situations. These results suggest that subjective impressions of movies are influenced by the differences in resolution images, as well as interactions between imaging types and characteristics of movie contents.

Robot-assisted therapy has gained attention as one of mental health measures. In this paper, we investigated the influences of soft tactility on psychological and physiological stress relief effects to verify whether soft robots or hard robots are effective as therapy robots. Resultantly, we confirmed that psychological stress relief effects obtained by interaction with soft robots are significantly higher than that with hard robots, particularly reducing tension and depression, improving vigor. And we also verified that physiological stress relief effects, especially increasing alpha waves, obtained by interaction with soft robots are significantly higher, too. In addition, we found that soft tactility may have effects of inhibiting reduction users' motivation for interaction. These results suggest that soft robots are more effective as therapy robots.

In recent years, as information equipment has become multi-functional, an easy-to-use interface has been demanded. Particularly, an interface design that can be operated intuitively is urgently required. Therefore, we have re-examined this problem from the point of view of familiarity and organization along the flow of execution of user behavior for the design method, characteristics, and the meaning of an intuitive interface by use of a literature search, a questionnaire survey, and experiments. Based on our results, after reviewing patterns that combine the recognition and operation by a user, we classified interfaces into four types. As a result, we have clarified the characteristics and requirements of an intuitive interface and design guidelines which form the methodological framework of an intuitive interface design. The current study focused on information terminals using a touch panel, but the design guidelines proposed should be applicable to the interface design of various devices.

With the spread of digital games, board games as analog games are also popular. There are several discussions focusing on educational methods using board games. However, although it is said that it will have improved communication skills and educational effects, there is not much specific analysis. It is considered impossible to conduct social experiments that only control the use of board games, and it is generally difficult to measure them. Therefore, in this study, based on the hypothesis that it is effective, we set the “Fundamental Competencies for Working Persons” by METI as educational effects for 24 types of board games and analyzed the relationship. This paper describes the results. In addition, we discuss whether board games can be generalized for playing and learning, and the “Fundamental Competencies for Working Persons” for educational effects.

In this paper, we propose an automatic generation system of the comic from a newspaper article. In the proposed system, two characters appear in the generated comic: one has a role of questioner and the other is elucidator. These characters are created using an automatic comics generation tool named “Komipo!”. First, the proposed system analyzes the text of a newspaper article and every sentence is presumed the importance and importance analysis and emotion analysis using language resources are carried out for each sentence. From the result of importance and emotion analysis, the system chooses the characters having suitable expression and a pose to the sentence of an article. The system converts the text of an article into spoken language from the literary language. If there is a difficult word in a text, the proposed system generates additional frame to explain the meaning of the difficult word. The background image for every frame is chosen from Flickr. In the image selection process, not only language processing, but also the result of image analyses is used. Evaluation experiments have been carried out and we confirmed that the system is able to choose the image suitable for the text of an article by performing image processing. In addition, it has shown that the expression by a comic style contributes to readability and easiness of understanding for newspaper articles.

Interest in pet robots and virtual pets is currently increasing along with the pet boom. Pet robots and virtual pets have been found to be therapeutic. However, what characteristics of pet robots and virtual pets are therapeutically effective have yet to be clarified. In this study, we carried out experiments to compare the therapeutic effects between pet robots and virtual pets in terms of physical embodiment from psychological and physiological aspects. Psychological evaluation results showed that the reduction in the tension score and increase in the vigor score with pet robots were significantly higher than those with virtual pets. Physiological evaluation results showed that the increase in the percentage of alpha waves with pet robots was significantly higher than that with virtual pets. These results suggest that physical interaction is an element for reducing mental strain and improving vitality.

Kawaii is one of the representative concepts of Japan-original Kansei. In this paper, we categorized Kawaii motion of Roomba and investigated the correlation between physical properties of motions and Kawaii-ness. First, we classified motions of Roomba into 10 types. Impressions of those motions were investigated and three of them were found to be Kawaii by subjects. Based on the findings, we formed a hypothesis that variations in acceleration, namely the jerk, affect Kawaii-ness. Second, we evaluated parameters of seven physical properties (position, velocity, acceleration, angle, angular velocity, angular acceleration, and time) of three Kawaii motions of Roomba. Then, we created 24 types of robot motions and evaluated impressions of them. The physical features of created motions were correlated with the Kawaii-ness of them. The result indicated that the jerk certainly affects the Kawaii-ness of motion but not always. It clearly indicated that the Kawaii-ness of motion is multifaceted.

This paper is aimed at evaluating the effect of prolonged mental stress on human physiological state. The human secretory immune and endocrine substances were introduced as “biomarkers” of such a prolonged stress. This relatively new field of study investigating the relationship and/or interaction between human mental and somatic states has been developed according to the development of the molecular analysis techniques, such as Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and showed that the several secretory hormones and immune substances could possibly be useful stress markers. However, what types of stressors and its duration could be evaluated by such biomarkers is not well understood. In this article, the effect of prolonged mental stress during long-term graduation examination of undergraduate students was investigated comparing with the effect of short-term mental stress by simple arithmetic task. As a result, one immune substance within saliva, immunoglobulin A, was showed as a possible stress marker for both long- and short-term stressors.

This research focuses on picture books, a medium for childhood reading, during which gender stereotypes are formed. The colors of the clothing of characters in picture books and the words they utter reveal characteristics of gender expression. The results showed that gender and age were among the most prominent characteristics in depicting characters in picture books, with red used more frequently for females and less bright shades for males. The proportion of colorful colors was higher among children, and the ratio of achromatic colors increased with age. These results are consistent with previous studies on color images and the evolution of color preferences with age. In the text, it was found that the differences between men and women in the way they perceive things are reflected in the text. These results suggest that picture books may influence the formation of children’s gender images and color preferences.

In this paper, we propose an automatic manzai-dialogue creating system. Manzai is performed mainly by a pair of two comedians. One (called boke) says strange things in a funny way and the other (called tsukkomi) corrects them. This is how they can make their audience laugh. In the proposed system, first, a sentence in a text is changed to a sentence having strange meaning. Then the proposed system produces a sentence which points out the mistakes and sometimes corrects it in a funny way. Tsukkomi does not only correct the mistakes but also compares them to something (called tatoe tsukkomi). By repeating this kind of processing, the proposed system can change a text to a manzai script. MeCab, Japanese language morphological analyzer and Japanese Google N-grams are employed to choose the candidate words considering word similarity and phonological similarity. We conducted experiments to evaluate the proposed system and confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed automatic manzai-dialogue creating system.

We investigated the acoustical characteristic of the sounds of crickets and its physiological and psychological effect on Japanese people. The sounds of crickets belonging to Family Grylloidae were grouped into 3 clusters by using the acoustical characteristics of the sounds. For this study, 3 Grylloidae species and 2 Tettigoniidae species were selected, and the sounds were recorded in a dark room. The psychological effect, i.e., pleasantness, was investigated by administering a questionnaire, which was based on the Semantic differential (SD) method. The comfort provided by the sounds was estimated on the basis of the findings on electroencephalograms in terms of an increase in the alpha wave. From the results of the questionnaire, people preferred the sound of crickets belonging to Family Grylloidae, rather than to those of crickets belonging to Family Tettigoniidae. It seemed that there was a deep relationship between the generation of alpha wave and the duration of the silent time within the sequential sounds. On the other hand, the rate of alpha wave increase in each species was not in good agreement with the results of the questionnaire, suggesting that further study is requires to understand the relationships between psychological and physiological effect on the human's Kansei. Finally, we proposed the effective presentation of the pleasant cricket sounds.
