The purpose of our study was to assess the mechanical effect on tattoo seals and eye makeup caused by a spatial magnetic gradient in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. Seven kinds of tattoo seals and three kinds of eye makeup, i.e., mascara, eye shadow, and eyeliner were used. On a 3.0-Tesla MRI, we determined these deflection angles according to a method established by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) at the position that produced the greatest magnetically induced deflection. Eighty-five percent of the tattoo seals showed deflection angles greater than 45 degrees of the ASTM guidelines, and the mascara and eye shadow showed over 40 degrees. This was because these contained ferromagnetic pigments such as an iron oxide, but those translational forces were very small owing to slight mass. However, it is desirable that these should be removed before MRI examination to prevent secondary problems.

It is difficult for Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients to remain in a strenuous position for a long time during examinations. The field of view (FOV): 250 mm is needed for hand examinations from the wrist to the finger. Two channel phased array coils are effective to use when examinations of the ‘off center’ are taken for the upper and lower extremities. The area of the array coils’ sensitivity can be expanded by shifting both coil elements 40–60% in the opposite direction of the element’s diameter. This method is given credibility due to the increased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the peripheral regions (shifted directions), but loses value in the central area, as indicated by the decrease in SNR. This was confirmed in the image of the hand using visual assessment including the fat suppression technique. It was verified that the sensitivity area was expanded using Scheffe’s method of paired comparison (Ura’s modified method). An application at the other regions of the body can be expected to be used in the case of using parallel positioned coils during clinical situation.

Fast spin echo(FSE)sequence has been widely recognized that the contrast of T2 weighted image was affected by multi-refocusing pulses. The contrasts have never been investigated in case of echo space(ES)below 20msec although magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)developed such that the ES of multi-refocusing pulses could set at 5msec. To evaluate the contrasts of fat with short ES, we determined the signal intensities of the brain tissues and bottle phantom which consists of lard, water and bean oil. The signal intensities of all regions increased with decreasing echo spaces, due to the decoupling of J-coupling, excepting water signal intensity. In addition, the contrasts between the white matter and each region decreased with decreasing ES until 10ms and, however, did not change with decreasing ES over 10ms. The contrast between white and gray matter is also discussed. It is concluded that the contrast does not change in case of the echo space below 10ms.

本研究の目的は、失敗する可能性の高い目視困難な末梢静脈を可視化する装置開発を最終目的に、近赤外光を用いた静脈透視技術と画像処理技術の課題を解決することである。これらの共通課題は深層静脈の可視化である。静脈透視技術について可視性に影響する光源とカメラと皮膚の位置関係、ナローバンドの効果、偏光フィルターの角度について検討した。その結果、これらの角度等により静脈の見え方は違いがあり最適値付近が明らかになった。画像処理技術の改良によってこれまでのプロトタイプより静脈可視化率が向上した。静脈の深さではなくコントラストの向上が功を奏した。臨床の意見を基に穿刺に有用な画像処理技術も向上した。
