A forensic examination is a top-to-toe examination looking for injuries and taking samples that may be used as evidence in a police investigation and any subsequent prosecution. The type of forensic examination most people know about revolves around violent crimes. Forensics used in these investigations can uncover scientific evidence that may provide enough proof or evidence to convict a violent criminal. A forensic examination can be very time-consuming but is vitally important. Histories from caregivers should be obtained separately and as soon as possible; careful documentation is essential. In this paper, important points of the causal relationship between the cause of death and characteristic autopsy findings are discussed in the three cases.

It is difficult to evaluate whether to have to recommend a new modality as a periodical screening program, although increasing with the power of detection of tiny tumor by improving of diagnostic imaging. The randomized-controlled trial which to evaluate the efficacy of cancer screening as most importance approach, is necessary for the long period and every tens of thousands of participants. National Lung Screening Trial to evaluate low dose CT screening for lung cancer demonstrated 20% reduction of lung cancer mortality according to the study protocol. There is, however, no movement to recommend low dose CT screening as a national screening program for lung cancer, since 27percent of high diagnostic workup rate and high fatality of biopsy cases. It is necessary to plan epidemiological study to evaluate a new promising modality as possible as an early stage, because there is unequal between the diagnostic modality and medical evaluation for cancer screening.

June 7, 2015, Japan Network for Research and Information on Medical Exposures(J-RIME)published Diagnostic Reference Levels(DRLs 2015)for the first time in Japan. To operate the DRL, it is necessary to collect a great deal of radiation dose information of own facilities efficiently. The purpose of this study was to construct a system for collecting dose information in CT examination using Radiation Dose Structured Report(RDSR). As a result of displaying the contents of RDSR using the free software, it was confirmed that there are differences in the information in RDSR by equipment and manufacturers. In-house software of dose management could be designed by focusing on the enumerated value, it was possible to extract information of interest from RDSR. For facilities which cannot introduce a commercial system, development of software for collecting radiation dose information using RDSR contributes greatly to the operation of DRL.

The Arterial disease caused by lifestyle, and mortality is 30% or more. Atherosclerosis is contributed not only medical factor, but also the stress by hemodynamics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of stress in the carotid artery using computed fluid dynamics analysis. We made computational fluid dynamics analysis system by open sourse softwear. And we evaluated stress and flow velocity using a carotid artery model that was based MRA images. The carotid bifurcation analysis model showed a voltex flow and a decrease in flow velocity in the carotid bulb area. The finding results suggested that hemodynamics contributes to the atherosclerosis.

The wavelength range of the near infrared (NIR) light is called `water window.' The superficial vascular imaging system using near infrared light sources was developed as those using both the reflected light and transmitted light. An NIR-sensitive CCD camera was surrounded by approximately sixty light emitting diodes (LEDs) , which have alternating wavelengths of 700 (visible light) , 760, 810 and 940nm, respectively. The camera detected the reflected NIR from superficial subcutaneous tissues at the palm and back of hands, and the wrist. Differences between wavelengths were significantly observed. Images taken at 940 nm the most clearly showed the vascular vessels at insides of these regions. As an application of the NIR imaging system, we examined whether the system was the beneficial tool for finding superficial subcutaneous foreign bodies or not. Twelve light sources of 940 nm LEDs were aligned for the transmission imaging. The alien substance examined was a mechanical pencil lead with 0.5 mm diameter. Chicken and pork meats (approx. 1 to 10 mm in thickness) were used instead of human skin. The thickness and fat contents were affected on the detection. As results, the NIR imaging was thought to be the beneficial tool for finding subcutaneous alien substances detection.

Human bodies work as important media for communication between humans and between humans and machines. Especially nonverbal messages by means of the human body convey more information than verbal ones, and besides, they have functions to control dialogues. Computer graphics (CG) representation of human bodies are, therefore, indispensable in order to make network - mediated communication and communication with computers natural to participants. In this paper types of CG representation of the human body is classified into four categories; 1) precise representation of human body shape,2) human body representation as communication media,3) human body representation as feedback information for human interface, and 4) multivariate data repersentation using human body appearance. The former three types are described by using examples.

An optical computed tomography(optical CT)is an imaging device that acquires a tomographic image by using visible light or near infrared light. In our previous study, optical CT using visible light was developed. However, the developed system was applicable to a transparent or small object. In this study, we focused on near-infrared light, and we conducted development and basic evaluation of an experimental system of optical CT using a near-infrared light. As for the experimental system, we developed the simple structure system employed near-infrared light source, single-lens reflex camera, and rotational table. In the experiments, we investigated the imaging properties of developed system using three types of samples. Results indicate that our system may be useful to obtain the tomographic image of biological samples.

In recent years, there is a growing demand for the accountability of those who manage to reduce patient dose for x‐ray imaging to the necessary minimum. Following the concept of ALARA(as low as reasonably achievable), radiologists and physicists will need to work collaboratively to determine the appropriate image quality for diagnostic x‐ray imaging. The analysis and understanding of results of x‐ray imaging require an understanding of photon attenuation in matter. With this goal in mind, a discussion of photon attenuation in matter is given and related to those behavior to x‐ray imaging parameter, especially in the case of tube voltage dependency for polychromatic beam. Simulation studies were carried out to find the optimal tube voltage for the signal‐to‐noise ratio in projection imaging and computed tomography with polychromatic x‐ray source. In addition, material decomposition using dual‐energy CT reconstruction is introduced for relating linear attenuation coefficient to tissue composition and structure.

Fast spin echo(FSE)sequence has been widely recognized that the contrast of T2 weighted image was affected by multi-refocusing pulses. The contrasts have never been investigated in case of echo space(ES)below 20msec although magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)developed such that the ES of multi-refocusing pulses could set at 5msec. To evaluate the contrasts of fat with short ES, we determined the signal intensities of the brain tissues and bottle phantom which consists of lard, water and bean oil. The signal intensities of all regions increased with decreasing echo spaces, due to the decoupling of J-coupling, excepting water signal intensity. In addition, the contrasts between the white matter and each region decreased with decreasing ES until 10ms and, however, did not change with decreasing ES over 10ms. The contrast between white and gray matter is also discussed. It is concluded that the contrast does not change in case of the echo space below 10ms.

Arterial spin labeling (ASL) is a means of perfusion assessments in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Since ASL uses arterial blood water as an endogenous tracer, it is no need to use contrast agent or irradiation. Therefore, these features make ASL complete non‐invasive and easily accepted in routine clinical practice. Recent prevalence of 3T clinical MRI system has dramatically increased the quality of ASL image along together with the development of ASL techniques. In this paper, we have described the overview of ASL techniques such as labeling scheme, post‐label delay, background signal control, and intra vascular signal suppression. Finally, we have presented some clinical cases with ASL application from our own experience.

This paper addresses some feature description and satio‐temporal analysis methods for bio‐medical images. Recently various kinds of diagnostic imaging systems have been developed. However, it is still important to improve the efficiency and performance of image processing techniques in biological and medical fields. Especially, texture and motion analyses of spatio‐temporal images like 3 dimensional time lapse data of ultra‐sound images, CT images and cell division images will give a new aspect for computer‐aided diagnosis. Because we will be able to obtain some information about 3D micro‐structure of cells or organs. In this paper, two optical flow methods for motion analysis and two texture feature descriptors are reviewed, and some examples of these processings are given.

Medical imaging devices such as CT and MR have developed remarkably, and many of them have been used in clinical examination. At the same time, because computer performance has drastically improved, many of clinical applications for medical images have been developed actively. Many of these clinical applications are focused on throughput, and is designed so that the user can get the result without having to know the details. Therefore, many processes in these applications have been black box, users can not know the details of them. However, use of the basic knowledge about digital image processing, users can infer what kind of algorithms are used in clinical application. This article provides basic knowledge of digital image processing and medical image processing algorithms frequently used in clinical applications.

Machine learning is a technology or technique that has been spreading rapidly due to the development of computer environment and the enormous amount of data available. Deep Neural Network (DNN), which is one of machine learning methods, has been studied explosively in recent years. This paper introduces the research applying DNN to medical images.

This review describes the roles of examinations, particularly DNA typing and postmortem imaging, in legal medicine. DNA typing of the short tandem repeat(STR)locus is useful for personal identification because it can analyse a small amount of and/or degraded forensic sample by polymerase chain reaction(PCR). The conventional procedure followed for DNA typing is multiplex STR analysis with capillary electrophoresis. Mitochondrial DNA analysis is an effective method for analysing small amounts of and/or degraded forensic samples in which even STR loci cannot be detected. Postmortem imaging by computed tomography(CT)is useful for forensic casework because it easily reveals bone fractures, pneumothorax and specific haemorrhagic lesions such as cerebral haemorrhage, subarachnoid haemorrhage and subdural haematoma. Thus, DNA typing and postmortem imaging will increasingly play vital roles in legal medicine.

Nanomedicine is the medical application of nanotechnology. Nanomedicine ranges from the medical applications of nanomaterials and biological devices, to nanoelectronic biosensors, and even possible future applications of molecular nanotechnology such as biological machines. In 2005, a new imaging method called magnetic particle imaging (MPI)was introduced. MPI can visualize the spatial distribution of magnetic nanoparticles(MNPs)with high sensitivity, spatial resolution, and imaging speed. MPI uses the nonlinear response of MNPs to detect their presence in an alternating magnetic field(AMF). MNPs can induce heat under an AMF, which allows applications to hyperthermia(magnetic hyperthermia). This paper describes the principle of MPI and applications to nanomedicine including the quantification of pulmonary mucociliary clearance, the prediction of therapeutic effects of magnetic hyperthermia, the monitoring of magnetic targeting, and cellular imaging and tracking for regenerative medicine. The future perspective of MPI is also described.
