The 2011 Tohoku earthquake and the associated tsunami caused a severe nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (1F), leading to radioactive water leaking into the sea. We conduct a triple nested high-resolution numerical hindcast to assess oceanic dispersion of the leaked cesium-137 (137Cs) in the coastal marginal sea, and successfully reproduce fluctuations of 137Cs concentration. While an alongshore 137Cs concentration PDF indicates a prevailing northward transport, a 137Cs flux budget analysis exhibits that the cumulative alongshore flux is much greater than the offshore flux with latitudinal asymmetry due to the eddy transport, suggesting that 137Cs tend to remain in the coastal zone.

A sudden acceleration of the Kuroshio jet appears off Cape Shionomisaki in the high-resolution (horizontal resolution of 1/36°) JCOPE 2 ocean reanalysis data. Using this dataset, we investigated the structure of the Kuroshio acceleration. The increase in the velocity of the current is accompanied by a downstream flow separation from the coast and an outcrop of cold temperature inshore. The acceleration of Kuroshio appears when it takes a near-shore path. Cape Shionomisaki amplifies the responses to the Kuroshio flow by creating the zonal velocity acceleration toward the downstream region when the Kuroshio flows closer to the coast. The Kuroshio acceleration coincided with the topographic ridge on the continental shelf near Cape Shionomisaki. This relation suggests that the dynamics of the acceleration is linked to the topographic feature. We proposed an explanation of the Kuroshio acceleration using a hydraulic control theory. An analytical solution was applied to the coastal topography around the Kii Peninsula. The solution captured some aspects of the Kuroshio acceleration.

Fluvial discharge from the rivers is viewed as a missing piece for the inventory of the radionuclides in the ocean during the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The land-derived input introduces a time lag behind the direct release through hydrological process because these radionuclides mostly attach to suspended particles (sediments) that are transported quite differently to the dissolved matter in the ocean. We therefore develop a regional sediment transport model consisting of a multi-class non-cohesive sediment transport module, a wave-enhanced bed boundary layer model and a stratigraphy model proposed by Blaas et al. (2007) based on ROMS.

1)新たな人工衛星リモートセンシング画像解析法に基づいて統合沿岸環境モニタリングシステムを一般化・汎用化するとともに,フィリピン,フィジー,サモア,沖縄における沿岸環境モニタリングを行った.そして,画像データのそろっている沖縄・石西礁湖及びその周辺陸域を対象とした過去約20年間の衛星画像(LANDSAT-TM)の解析を通して,石西礁湖内のサンゴ礁生態環境(特に海底被覆状態)の変遷と,それに対応した周辺陸域における土地利用や植生被覆状態の変遷を明らかにした.さらに,この陸域情報に基づいて,各流域からの赤土流入負荷の変遷を定量的に評価し,その結果を上記の沿岸生態環境の変遷に関する解析結果を照らし合わせることにより,周辺流域圏の土地利用形態等のあり方から見た沿岸-陸域統合型の資源管理策について検討した.2)流域からの環境負荷の定量的評価に基づいた陸域-沿岸統合型資源管理フレームの展開のために,フィジー,サモア,フィリピンにおいて,赤土流入量負荷や沿岸水質の長期モニタリング体制を構築し,従来にない長期連続データを得た.3)観光開発による生活雑排水流入などによって水質悪化と沿岸生態系劣化が著しいフィリピン・ミンドロ島北端に位置するプエルトガレラ沿岸域を対象として,同水域における物理・水質・生物環境調査や地元コミュニティーについての社会的調査を地元自治体,NGO,フィリピン大学等との共同で実施し,関連する数値シミュレーション等も併せて行うことにより,同水域における物理・水質・生物環境の特徴や水質劣化構造の実態を明らかにするとともに,「人間-沿岸生態」共存系の観点から,有効かつ持続的な環境保全策の立案にむけての検討を行った.4)サンゴ食害生物であるオニヒトデを対象として,有効な遺伝子マーカーを開発することによって集団遺伝学的な解析を行うとともに,広域的な海水流動・幼生輸送計算モデルによって幼生の広域輸送パターンを解析することによって,広域的な沿岸生態系の相互依存ネットワークの内容を調べた.この成果は重点的海洋保護区の設定に関して合理的・科学的な根拠を与えるための基礎情報となる.
