The relationship between groundwater quality and landuse was examined on a regional scale for Nobeyama district, Nagano Prefecture which is a large-scale agricultural zone and has a lot of dairy farms in the region. NO3-N, SO42-, Ca2+ and Mg2+ of high concentrations were detected in areas where agricultural activity was high. The concentration of groundwater composition of shallow wells was higher than that of spring water. In particular, high concentrations of NO3-N and SO42- were detected in shallow wells. These show that the effect of human activities for the shallow-well water is stronger than that for the spring water. Many strong correlations were found between the groundwater compositions of the shallow wells, whereas not so many in the spring waters. This suggest that the shallow groundwater quality rapidly reacts to the human impact in limited region. The hexadiagram show that the groundwater has much larger NO3-N and Ca2+ concentrations than the groundwater of the non-polluted control site. The present results indicate that not only NO3-N, Cl-, Ca2+ and Mg2+ but also SO42- could be groundwater composition indicators in an agricultural region like Nobeyama district.

The idea of sociogeochemistry, which aims to analyze the roles of human activity from the geochemical point of view, was first proposed by Takahisa Hanya, then a professor of Tokyo Metropolitan University, in around 1960. He reached to this idea through studies of geochemical material balance of chemical elements in Japan islands under the influences of similar ideas by some pioneers, like Buffon and Vernadsky, who had pointed out the importance of the effects of human activity on the history of the earth or geochemical cycles of elements. Based on the idea of sociogeochemistry, Hanya and his coworkers made lots of studies on water pollution and material flow in urban areas. Parallel to these problems, they made studies on methodology of sociogeochemistry introducing a systems-analysis method. While the concept of sociogeochemistry was not widely accepted at first, it is becoming popular more and more along with the increase of environmental problems in the present day.

東京北多摩地区の地下水(湧水,深井戸)中の揮発性有機塩素系化合物濃度について2年間測定した。そのうち湧水1地点については1週間に1回の短間隔で採水,分析を行った。その結果,テトラクロロエチレン濃度が減少する傾向を示したが,トリクロロエチレン,1,1,1-トリクロロエタンはほとんど変化をせず,また,トリクロロエチレンを除いて季節変化を示さなかった。次に,近接する湧水について調べたところ,他の化学成分についてはほぼ同じ値を示しているのにもかかわらず,揮発性有機塩素系化合物濃度はそれぞれの湧水で異なった値を示した。一方,2カ所の深層地下水(深井戸)については1カ月に1回の間隔で採水,分析を行ったが,トリクロロエチレンが2カ所の井戸水とも最も高く,飲料水水質基準を超過したものもあった。しかし,季節変化は認められず,検出されない化合物もあった。また,豪雨後の湧水中の揮発性有機塩素系化合物濃度の変化について調べたところ,降雨に伴う湧出水量の増加にかかわらず,ほぼ一定の濃度を示した。

The aim of the investigation is to show how the Ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis), a fish living in clean streams, can return to an urban river that believed to be polluted in the past. It was found that the ammonia nitrogen concentration had decreased remarkably, by monitoring of the water quality at the river. Due to the qualitative improvement of the sewage treatment water that is the river's main discharge source, the ammonia nitrogen concentration was decreased. Ammonia is an important substance for the survival of the creature; and a safe level, which makes the Ayu's survival possible, was estimated.
