The purpose of this thesis is to reinterpret the philosophicaltheory developed by George Berkeley (1685-1753) as the philosophical theory with a new perspective to grasp a problem of modern physics. As the philosophy of physics, Berkeley’s philosophyis usually viewed as a precursor of Mach’s philosophy. Although it is well known that Mach’s philosophy is attracting attention of modern physicists and that Berkeley is highly evaluated as a precursor of Mach, the research of Berkeley’s philosophy itself is still fruitful. The reasons are as follows. Firstly, Berkeley’s philosophy has some original points that can affect the interpretation of physics. Secondly,the original points can give the reinterpretation of a problem of modern physics. In this thesis, on the basis of a reinterpretation of Berkeley’philosophy, I discuss the above two themes. In general, there are few attempts that connect Berkeley’s philosophy with the problem of modern physics. This thesis deals with the reinterpretation of Berkeley’s philosophy by focusing on the philosophical topic of the construction of the concept of speed. Mach, who is viewed as a successor of Berkeley, asserts that the concept of speed should be defined as the ratio of a spatial distance to another spatial distance. Julian Barbour (1937-) , who attempts the reconstruction of modern physics by utilizing some of Mach’s philosophical points, also argues that the concept of speed shouldn’t contain the concept of time interval. The reason for their claim is that the concept of speed that doesn’t contain the concept of time interval is considered to be a solution for the philosophical problem of the definition of time intervals. This thesis deals with the reinterpretation of Berkeley’s philosophy by focusing on that the concept of speed defined as the ratio of a spatial distance to another spatial distance can be constructed on the basis of Berkeley’s philosophy.

本研究は、日本の近代文化における「南方」概念の形成を、その視覚表現において分析し、日本の造形文化の展開に及ぼした影響を考察する基礎的な研究である。調査の対象は、沖縄、台湾、東南アジア等をふくむ広範囲な地域にわたる「南方」である。そこで生成した多様な「南方」の視覚表象を、データベースの作成をすすめながら総合的に検証し、これらの成果に基づいて「南方」イメージの形成と変遷を具体的に考察した。
