This study is a part of the investigation and the analysis of the market places in Tokyo through the transitional periods in modern urban history. The purpose of this study is to clarify the characteristics and the developmental process of the urban space. The investigation and the analysis are focused on the area around the east gate of Shinjuku station through the functions of the commerce and office buildings. The buildings have generally several stories in height. However, as part of the analysis of urban space, the street level would represent an important characteristic of the buildings. Therefore, this study investigates and analyzes only the first floor, the street level that directly relates to the urban space. The commerce and office buildings are functionally classified in twelve types.

東京の主要な繁華街である浅草・銀座・新宿・渋谷の建築機能は、戦後から現代において、ショッピングを楽しむエリアの拡大により、飲食店や喫茶店、居酒屋などの分布状況が大きく変化してきていることが確認できた。4つの繁華街に共通していたのは、社交を主とする喫茶店や居酒屋などの施設における、昼と夜の性格による分布が分離してきた変化である。さらに、新宿、渋谷では、ターミナル駅前における多様な機能が混在してきた集積の変化が認められた。
