The authors constructed "slipping adhesion test bogie" designed upon a new idea of measuring the coefficient of adhesion continually while running, and have observed the state of adhesion on main lines since 1985. Recently, they placed a car equipped with this bogie on a steep line where wheel-spin and skidding of rolling stock had been frequently the cause of troubles. As the result of runs of the car under various weather conditions such as fine, fog, snow, sleet and frost, influence of the weather condition upon the adhesion between rails and wheels has been made clear and evaluated quantitatively.

Much difficulty has been encountered in cooperative traction of electric railcars and diesel railcars, because the structure and performance of the respective control systems are very different. Diesel railcars are characterized by more or less constant output from the initial to middle speed range and constant torque beyond the middle speed range. Electric railcars are characterized by virtually constant torque from the initial to middle speed range, with the output decided by notch order beyond the middle speed range. The authors propose a new control system for cooperative traction based upon an entirely new conception. This system changes a general notch order into a suitable notch order for the diesel railcar depending on the electric railcar's speed. The system was mounted on JR's electric and diesel railcars and tested on the main line of JR KYUSYU. Based on this test result, introduction of the system in commercial service was decided upon and practical operation began on April 29, 1989.

Many experiments have been made to clear the true state of adhesion coefficient μ which significantly affects the performance of rolling stock. However, such experiments have been made mainly in laboratory rooms, and the experiments made on main lines have been simply a medley of data only at the spot of wheel slipping. The author employed a "Slipping adhesion test truck" built on a new idea of realizing the measurement of μ continually while running, and observed the true state of μ along the mainlines. From the results thus obtained, the author derived the statistically processed μ, and analyzed the relation between μ and the rate of wheel slipping. In addition, the author referred to the various factors that reduced the value of μ.

The friction coefficient μ on the contact point position between a wheel flange and a rail is said to seriously affect on the occurrence of the wheel-climb derailment. However, the method to quantitatively and exactly evaluate the μ has not suggested until to the present. The authors proposed a method to easily and exactly evaluate the value, and made it clear by an experiment, employing a 1/5 scale model track and model truck. The result obtained through the experiment indicates that the value on dry rails has a similarity with that of the adhesion coefficient, and that the dry rail on the main line keeps the value at high level. Using the μ value obtained by the studies, the risk of the wheel-climb derailment was evaluated. As the result of the evaluation, they found that higher μ value than the conventionally used one should be introduced for the risk evaluation of the derailment, and that very short term lateral force below 60 ms should be observed on the steep curvatures.

To keep on-time performance of commuter trains in mega cities, the skillful brake handling is required for the drivers on the approach of the stations. However, on the course of the training for the newly comer drivers, such skill has been telepathically given by their instructors, and none of theories nor quantitative instructions has been introduced. The authors proposed a method to quantitatively evaluate the brake handling skill on the approach of the stations. Using the newly proposed method, they investigated the data piled up in the event recorder of the EMUs operated the JR West Ohsaka Kanjoh Line, one of the most densely train-operated commuter lines in the JRs. On the investigations, they confirmed that the brake handling skill could be easily and quantitatively evaluated by the method. Then, they applied it to investigate the trains operated on the Tohkaido Main Line between Kyoto, Osaka and Kobe, where the interval of the stations is longer and the scheduled operating speed is higher than the formally investigated line. The results of the study are briefly reported in the paper.

The authors proposed a new method which could easily and precisely detect the contact point position between the rail and the wheel under the critical condition of wheel climb derailment. As the result of the experiment using the above mentioned method, they found that the position was variously changed according to rail attack-angles and wheel lift-up values from the rail tread. The next, employing the contact point position, a new conception was proposed to theoretically calculate the wheel lift-up value from the rail tread when a wheel climb derailment occurred. Using a model track and a model truck, experimentation was done to examine the difference between the theoretically calculated value and the practically measured one on the wheel lift-up value. The result obtained was very much in agreement with the theoretically calculated value and the practical lift-up one.

阪神大震災で脱線又は重大な損傷を被った車両が在線した箇所は気象庁が発表した震度階級7の被災地域とほぼ一致することがわかった.被災箇所の割合を高架,地上及び地下で区分したところ,地下在線中の車両の被災割合が最も少なく,高架橋在線中の車両の被災割合は圧倒的に高くほとんど全ての車両が何らかの被害を被っていた.よって,地下に在線する車両の耐震性は他の線区のものに比べ高いといえる.脱線の状況を調査した結果,激しい地震動により軌道が全く損傷していないのに飛び上がり脱線した車両があり,走行又は停止中の車両の心皿がが激しい上下動により脱出して心皿の脱出防止用コックが破断した事例も複数確認された.このような信じがたい激しい揺れに遭遇した列車は,どのような手段を講じても脱線を防止出来ない.幸いなことに,このような深刻な事態が発生した場合でも列車が崩壊した橋梁や高架橋に高速で突っ込む可能性は高くはないと判断できる事実を見いだした。土木構造物が重大な損壊を被るような激しい地震動に遭遇した場合,列車は全軸脱線し,非常ブレーキで減速するよりはるかに高い減速度で急停車しているからである.他方,構造物の崩壊や陸橋の落橋は列車が停止した時点以降に発生したと指定される事例がほとんどだったからである。従って,一部で提案されている脱線防止用レールを積極的に架橋橋上の軌道に敷設して震災時の脱線を防止しようとの考え方は必ずしも最善の策とは言えない。走行列車が激震に遭遇した場合に考えられる最も大きな人的被害の一つは,地下鉄内で高速走行する列車が揺れによりトンネル側壁に設置されたトラフや信号機に激突して側窓や側扉が大破するケースである.かような事態を回避するために地下鉄内の工作物はなるべく電車側窓に対応する高さを避けて設置することが望ましい.

Many trains were derailed and damaged by the earthquake in Kobe on January 17, 1995. At the same time, many railway girder bridges and viaducts were seriously damaged by the quake. It was postulated that serious accidents could occur as a result of trains running at high speeds into these girder bridges or viaducts. Fortunately, no fatal accidents occurred. On investigating such accidents, the authors found that they rarely occur, because a train derailed by the violent shock of a quake is so radically decelerated by the huge running resistance caused by the derailment that it stops just after the quake. On the other hand, it takes some time until the bridges or viaducts collapse after the quake.
