This study examined differences in subjective well-being between parents and non-parents in middle age. An online survey was conducted with people from 45- to 60- years of age (N = 558). The subjective well-being scores were not significantly different between the above two groups. Multi-regression analysis suggested that the determinants affecting participants varied according to their gender and the presence of child. While bilateral activities as a married couple influenced their subjective well-beings, other influential factors included household income, social activities for women with a child, the involvement with future generation in childless women, and household income in men, regardless of parental status. The results for women suggest that generativity might play a key role in subjective well-being of the middle-aged women with no children as well as those with a child.

This study examined the relationship among generative behavior, generative concern, and subjective well-being in middle-aged non-parents. In study 1, an online survey was conducted of parents and non-parents aged 45 to 60 years (N = 558). Parents showed significantly higher levels of generative concern and generative behavior than non-parents. Structural equation modeling indicated that generative behavior predicted higher levels of generative concern and, in turn, generative concern predicted higher levels of subjective well-being. Differences in this association were neither evident for parents and non-parents nor for men and women. In study 2, a longitudinal survey was conducted of the non-parents from study 1 at two time points, 24 months apart (N = 187). The chronological association inferred from the structural model in study 1 among generative behavior, generative concern, and subjective well-being was confirmed by this short-term longitudinal data. Mediation analysis indicated that levels of generative concern were higher through the past two years of generative behavior. These results suggest the possibility of developing generative behavior and concern in non-parents through behaviors such as volunteer and civic activities.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between generative acts, generative concern, and well-being in middle-aged married people with no children, from the perspective of gender and employment type. An online survey was conducted with 196 males and 461 females from 45 to 60 years of age. Structural equation modeling indicated that generative acts predicted higher levels of generative concern and in turn, generative concern predicted higher levels of well-being regardless of gender and employment type. At the same time, it was also suggested that the pattern of these associations varied according employment type in females: while psychological well-being, such as "purpose in life" and "personal growth", correlated with generative concern regardless of employment type, subjective well-being correlated with generative concern in full-time and part-time workers. Moreover, "interaction with the subsequent generation" correlated with generative concern regardless of employment type, whereas "generative acts outside work" in full-time workers and "generative acts at work" in part-time workers correlated with generative concern, respectively.

This study is aimed at examining the relations between parenthood and the marital relationship from a perspective of subjective well-being in middle-aged adults. An online survey was conducted with parents and non-parents from 45 to 60 years of age (N=558). Descriptive analysis suggested that both the frequency of actions as a couple and the degree of intimacy with one's spouse in non-parents were higher than in parents. Hierarchal multiple regression analysis and mediation analysis indicated that actions as a couple predicted higher levels of subjective well-being through the medium of intimacy with one's spouse in non-parents and fathers, while actions as a couple directly predicted higher levels of subjective well-being without the medium of spousal intimacy in mothers. The results mentioned above might reflect both the effects of actions as a couple on spousal intimacy and the specificity of middle-aged mothers.
