The practice of Inochi-tendenko is extremely effective in saving lives. Though this practice has been highly featured since the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, the degree to which people recognize its effectiveness remains low, and very little empirical analysis has focused on the psychological barriers to its practice. Using a newly developed paradigm of a supposed sediment-disaster dilemma, we show that emotional judgment in system 1 decision-making is a key psychological determinant of the hesitation to practice Inochi-tendenko. We also attempt to experimentally demonstrate one possible way to control such emotional judgment. We believe our findings have implications for disaster-prevention education and discuss possible concrete ways to provide education on the practice of Inochi-tendenko based on these findings.

This study examined infidelity in heterosexual romantic relationships and its effects of gender, attitudes toward infidelity and romantic relationships, and the desire to have an affair. Participants were heterosexual 77 males and 98 females. They were presented with 25 behaviors which were exchanged between males and females and answered their own permissible level of their partners' behaviors and the estimate of their partner's permissible level of their own behaviors in their romantic relationhips. Cluster analysis revealed six clusters: "sexual behaviors", "pleasure behaviors", "companionship and intimate disclosure", "mutual supportive behaviors", "eating and drinking, and giving a present", and "companionate chat". Males' permissible level was higher in sexual behaviors and lower in companionate chat than females'. Their partner's permissible level were higher in sexual behaviors, companionship and intimate disclosure, and mutual supportive behaviors than their own permissible level. Companionate chat was highest and sexual behavior was lowest in both permissible levels. The more permissive attitudes toward infidelity, the stronger desire to have an affair, the less romanticism, and the less romantic power they have, the higher both permissible levels were. The effects on infidelity are discussed.

This study investigated the influence of male pattern baldness on the impression of men among adult Japanese men and women. Participants were 79 men and 87 women (mean age = 39.17, SD = 10.75, range: 20-59). They rated 4 types of photographic stimuli based on the Modified Norwood-Hamilton Scale (Takashima et al., 1981) on several dimensions of impressions. Analysis showed that the amount of cranial hair influenced impressions of photographic stimuli. Results showed that baldness was perceived to be a sign of senescence. Furthermore, baldness was perceived to demonstrate several features (e.g., social maturity), an attribute relevant to senescence. Neither sex nor age of the participant influenced the differences in impression of photographic stimuli.

Japanese schools commonly use "school attendance in health room" as a measure to determine the need for educational support for students facing difficulties such as refusal to attend school. Since this support strategy requires collaboration with schoolteachers, it is essential to examine the associations of their attitudes regarding educational support provision with the relevant psychological and socio-environmental factors. Thus, we investigated schoolteachers' (n=157) attitudes, especially negative attitudes, towards school attendance in the health room program and analyzed their underlying psychological and socio-environmental factors. The current findings demonstrated that negative attitudes were significantly associated with the psychological factors of help-seeking preference and prioritizing the group over individuals during classroom management. The results further suggested that adequate help-seeking preference and perceptions of sufficiently collegial work environment among schoolteachers mitigated their negative attitudes. Based on these findings, we discuss potential strategies, for psycho-educational service provision, focusing on the role of the Yogo teacher.

This research aims to collect experiences of feeling a sexual desire from men during face-to-face interviews to make a sexual desire scale for men (SDS-M) and then examine its reliability and appropriateness. The interviews were carried out with married and unmarried 11 men in their 20s to 40s. In addition, online surveys were conducted among 300 married and unmarried men in their 20s to 40s, using the SDS-M. With the exclusion of data on 39 participants who said they had never experienced sexual intercourse, data on 261 men were put to a factor analysis. As a result, the SDS-M discovered four structural factors: "satisfaction with sex", "satisfaction with masturbation", "desire to seek advice on sexual distress", and "recognition of sexual debility". The discovery verified the reliability of the SDS-M from the aspect of internal consistency and its appropriateness from construct validity. "Desire to seek advice on sexual distress" was stronger among the unmarried than among the married. "Recognition of sexual debility" was conspicuously reported by men in their 40s.

This study examined the relationship between judgements of suicide by laypersons in suspicious death investigations, and the presence or absence of a suicide note and deceased's information that did not support suicide. We asked university students to judge the possibility of suicide in a fictitious investigation of suspicious death; 72 subjects received a case with "a suicide note" and deceased's information, 71 subjects received a case with "a suicide note" and without deceased's information, 71 subjects received a case with "no suicide note" and deceased's information, and 72 subjects received a case with "no suicide note" and without deceased's information. Analysis of variance results showed that subjects who received a case with "a suicide note" judged the possibility of suicide as slightly higher than subjects receiving cases without "a suicide note". Subjects who received the deceased's information judged the possibility of suicide as slightly higher than subjects without it.

This study examined the psychological structure of "images of Kendo" in Kendo club students and general students. This study included 513 subjects (138 male, 375 female, average age 19.6±1.22 years old), who were asked to write the 10 sentences that came to mind after the phrase "Kendo is" on a questionnaire. Of those sentences, they were asked to choose the one sentence evoking the strongest image of Kendo. Text mining of selected sentences extracted words, and the relations between them were analyzed.The analysis showed that Kendo club students and general students had different images of Kendo. Many Kendo club students responded with psychological aspects, such as "disciplining the human character" and "training the mind." General students gave many answers regarding its physiological aspects such as "sweat" and "voice," reflecting Kendo as a sport. However, both Kendo club students and general students cited Reigi (etiquette) in their images of Kendo.

This is a study that analyzed effects of self-oriented motivate and other-oriented motivate on career development among university students. A questionnaire that was asking "attitude toward self- and other-oriented motivation" and "career resilience" had been carried out to 316 students. And then pass-analysis had been conducted on the result above mentioned questionnaire on the assumption that "attitude toward self- and other-oriented motivation" might affect "career resilience". As a result of the analysis showed that only "integrating self- and other-oriented motivation" affected "novelty and diversity of interests", "optimism about the future", "social skills" and "ability to cope with problems and change" all of which are belong to subscale of "career resilience". A certain result showed that an importance of "integrating self- and other-oriented motivation" in the career development process.

This study investigated the relationship between singing ability and spatial ability in preschoolers between the ages of 4 and 6 years old. The purpose was to examine cognitive ability associated with singing ability, in considering how to support singing in the field of early childhood education. We measured verbal ability and age as a control variable. Singing ability was measured using the "AIRS Test Battery of Singing Skills (ATBSS) for Children-Revised" (Ogura & Adachi, 2018). Spatial ability and verbal ability were measured using the WPPSI-III Block Design and Vocabulary. The results of multiple regression analysis showed that preschoolers with higher spatial ability had higher singing ability. No association between singing ability against verbal ability and age was identified. We concluded that the relationship of spatial and singing abilities was confirmed because both abilities were associated with perception and motor integration. Future intervention studies should be conducted in early childhood education settings.

This study aims to demonstrate how Japanese schoolteachers evaluate their cooperation with Yogo teachers and school counselors. Using a web-based survey of 421 Japanese public elementary and junior high school teachers, the current study demonstrated that coordination-type and corroboration-type cooperation with Yogo teachers and school counselors were positively evaluated as providing effective support; however, consultation-type cooperation with them was not positively evaluated as providing support for students with difficulties. Based on these findings, this study discusses potential psycho-educational service that could be used to strengthen the possible relationships between schoolteachers, Yogo teachers, and school counselors.

The purpose of this study was to examine the psychological processes of families whose members have joined destructive cults and to comprehensively understand the families from the viewpoint of the Ambiguous Loss Theory. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 families. As a results, the psychological processes of families was organized from the viewpoint of interaction between the family and the said person, and it is inferred that the process goes through the stage of awaring the said person's involvement of the cult, and the stage of deteriorating the family relationship. This research also inferred that each stages affect each other with the negative experience caused by cult involvement. In addition, this research found that families have suffered with cult problems had experienced ambiguous loss. Up to the present, an ambiguous loss have been categorized into two types; however, based on the results of this research, using continuous indicators of "clear - unclear" rather than binary of "present / absent" is expected to be able to flexibly understand the current state of ambiguous loss.

Support for university students not attending classes or shutting-in themselves has become an important issue for universities. In this study, a questionnaire survey was conducted to 384 students to obtain knowledge on such support. The study includes affinity for shutting-in, influence from self-acceptance, acceptance of others and social trust, and also "fear of intimacy" which assumed to be a specific interpersonal relationship with the affinity. In multiple regression analysis, "self-acceptance" and "social trust" indicated significant influence on "affinity for shutting-in" for men and women. "Intimacy avoidance," a sub-factor of "fear of intimacy," was indicated likewise in "self-acceptance" for men and "self-acceptance," "acceptance of others" and "social trust" for women. "Relationship dysregulation" significantly influenced "self-acceptance" and "acceptance of others" for men and women. Different factors influenced "affinity for shutting-in" as well as "intimacy avoidance" and "relationship dysregulation," sub-factors of "fear of intimacy" which is considered to be a characteristics of interpersonal relationships thereof. To provide support in practice, it is considered necessary to identify where the difficulty lies before considering how to get involved.

This research examined how teacher's intrinsic motivation for teaching affected learner's intrinsic motivation for learning topics through expectancy formation (i.e., social contagion of the motivation processes) and how this processes were moderated by learner's intrinsic motivation to enter university. We conducted a longitudinal survey of Japanese first-year undergraduates (N=637) within a half-year class. Multi-group structural equation modeling showed that learner's perception of the teacher's intrinsic motivation was positively related to learner's expectancy of learning topics and teaching, but this expectancy was positively related to later learner's intrinsic motivation only in the group with high intrinsic motivation to enter university. This research suggests that learner's individual differences such as intrinsic motivation to enter university might moderate social contagion of the motivation processes. In terms of motivating university students, it is important to provide opportunities for them to develop an interest in learning at university besides their academic performance among high school students.

In this study, we examined (1) how to draw the image of teacher, (2) how to perceive educational training. Participants in the study were first grade students at Nippon Sport Science University who were aiming to acquire educational qualifications. The content of the questionnaire focused on the two perspectives: "image of teacher" and "teacher practice". Factor analysis was performed on each of these questions to extract each factor. We compared each element with the degree of desire to become a teacher (4 groups) and obtained the following results. (1) Factor analysis. As a result of factor analysis of 25 items related to the image of the teacher, 5 factors of "credibility/trust", "stability", "ability", "severity", and "experience" were extracted. As a result of factor analysis of 25 items related to practical training, 4 factors were extracted: "confidence as an apprentice", "understanding of practical training", "preparation for practical training", and "anxiety about practical training". (2) Degree of desire to be a teacher. Comparing the scale scores of each factor according to the degree of teacher aspiration, the score of the group with the highest desire to become a teacher was high.

Although research on resilience has been attracting the attention of researchers as an important concept to support the psychological wellbeing of sick children, studies on resilience of children with allergies is still inadequate in Japan. This study identifies future research agenda for the field. First, we reviewed research on resilience and provided its definitions and history. Then, we summarized the development of resilience in Japan and found that there are very few empirical studies on factors influencing resilience in the nursing field. The study contends that research on determinants of resilience among children with allergies is needed and suggests that the resilience-related model applied to normal junior high school students can equally be applied to adolescents with allergies. However, the causal relationship among variables of the resilience-related model has not been determined. This study proposes that the resilience-related model for children with allergies should be generalized through a longitudinal research.

This study aimed to explore the relationship of trust in actors related to criminal justice with attitudes toward criminal justice and to identify the determinants of trust. A questionnaire was administered to 332 Japanese adults. The following results were obtained: (1) trust in actors was generally determined by respondents' perceptions on actors' value similarity, capacity, and fairness; (2) the relationship between trust and perceptions varied depending on respondents' level of interest in crime-related issues; and (3) while attitudes toward criminal justice were related to trust in researchers, victims, prison officers, politicians, community members, and judges, they were not related to trust in policemen and prison officers The implications of these findings have been discussed.
