The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected every aspect of social life. Even in the education field, flexible measures were required beyond conventional wisdom. We provided remote practical hospital pharmacy training (remote training) using online systems such as Zoom and Moodle. We conducted a questionnaire survey with 38 subjects and 34 respondents, who were students that underwent remote training. The students self-evaluated their achievement level regarding specific behavioral objectives (SBOs), from the 2013 revised edition of pharmaceutical clinical practice related to hospital pharmacy practical training, in four stages. In addition, we analyzed the words used in the free comments using a text mining method for their characteristics. The SBO classifications exceeding the overall average were “clinical attitude”, "acknowledgement of patient information”, “prescription and question inquiry”, and so forth. The SBO classifications falling below the overall average were “team medical care at medical institutions”, “preparation of drugs based on prescription”, “safety management”, and so forth. The analysis of the positive aspects of remote training suggest that it was useful in sharing information about Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan (SOAP) records in case analysis, and evaluating the effects and side effects of drug treatment. Conversely, the analysis of the required improvements in remote training showed concerns regarding the considerable amount of homework and issues within the communication environment. We consider that remote training has a certain educational effect and can be expected to complement clinical training.

Passing of drugs across epithelial cell sheets and endothelial cell sheets is an obligatory step in the absorption of a drug. The passing routes of drugs are classified into transcellular and paracellular pathways. The transcellular route has been widely investigated and is used in clinical therapy. In contrast, drug delivery using the paracellular route has never been fully developed. Sodium caprate is the only absorption-enhancer of drugs that uses the paracellular route. Tight junctions (TJs) exist between adjacent cells in epithelial and endothelial cell sheets, and they play a role in sealing the cell sheets. Therefore, we must modulate the TJ barrier for drug delivery using paracellular route. In this review, we describe barriology, including very recent topics, and overview absorption-enhancers from the perspective of barriology.

Objective: To evaluate (1) a questionnaire for pharmacists on learning about drug information (DI) and using DI in practice, and (2) our DI seminar. Methods: (1) 72 hospitals and 105 community pharmacists in Miyagi, Japan were recruited.  The questionnaire included items on DI activities and questions about topics that pharmacists “want to study.”  (2) We held a seminar based on the questionnaire results and the reports of six pharmacists (one from a nonprofit corporation specializing in disseminating information on dietary supplements, one acute care pharmacist, two chronic and cancer hospital pharmacists, one community pharmacist, and one belonging to a community pharmacist association).  At the end of the seminar, participants were asked to complete an evaluation questionnaire on the seminar. Results: (1) The DI activity “participate in scientific meetings and collect information” was associated with other DI activities among both hospital and community pharmacists.  Multivariate analyses revealed that this DI activity was more strongly significantly associated with the topics “want to study techniques for presentation skills” (p<0.0001) and “want to study other DI practices” (p=0.008) than other DI activities.  (2) Sixty seven participants attended the seminar.  According to the evaluation questionnaire, the mean grade for the seminar was 80.5/100 points, and 96% of participants agreed with the “necessity of information sharing.”Conclusion: Participation in scientific meetings is important for pharmacists to develop their DI practice, and encourages information sharing between hospital and community pharmacists.  Environments in which more pharmacists have opportunities to participate in scientific meetings and related seminars are needed.
