A feeding experiment was conducted to examine the effect of different docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) content in rotifers on the DHA requirement of larval yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiata during Artemia feeding stages. Rotifers enriched with freeze-dried shark eggs (HR) or Nannochloropsis (LR) having different levels of DHA were given to larvae for 23 days. Each lot of larvae was then divided into three groups, and each group was fed Artemia containing different levels of DHA; 0%, 1.6% and 2.6%, respectively, for 16 days. Both survival and vitality of larvae during Artemia feeding stages were affected by the DHA levels in rotifers at the start of feeding. It was found that as DHA content in rotifers increased, the DHA requirement of larvae during Artemia feeding stages decreased from 2.6 to 1.6%. When larvae were fed rotifers containing 1.3% DHA followed by Artemia containing 1.6% or 2.6% DHA, healthy larvae were obtained. The survival and vitality of larvae fed on rotifers having a low level of DHA improved by feeding them with Artemia containing 2.6% DHA.The results indicate that the DHA content in rotifers influences the DHA requirement of larval yellowtail during the Artemia feeding stages.

The use of defatted soybean meal (SBM) in combination with corn gluten meal (CGM) and meat meal (MM) as a partial or complete replacement for fish meal was studied in carp. Fish meal in the control diet with 37% protein was substituted by the combination of those protein meals at levels of 56, 78, 89, and 100%. The effect of supplementation of crystalline amino acids to the 100% fish meal replaced diet was also examined. Duplicate tanks of fish (4 or 6g on average) were fed to satiation at 21±1 or 24±1°C for 9 or 5 weeks.Fish fed the control diet showed the best growth rate, feed efficiency and PER. Replacement of fish meal up to 56% with SBM and CGM gave good weight gain and feed efficiency comparable to the control, but the higher inclusion of SBM, CGM, and MM reduced growth and feed utilization. Supplementation of Lys, Met, and Thr to the 100% fish meal replaced diet markedly improved growth and feed efficiency up to about 90% of the control group.Supplementation of the EAA mixture at levels comparable to those in the fish meal control diet and twice that amount resulted in growth rates of about 87 and 94% of the control group, respectively.

Red seabream broodstock were fed various diets of different nutritional quality for either 26 days or shortly before spawning to clarify the effective components in cuttlefish meal and raw krill which aid in quality egg production.
The percentage of buoyant eggs was lowest in the control group receiving the white fish meal diet, and was elevated by the addition of 200mg DL-α-tocopheryl acetate. The value was also effectively improved by replacement of white fish meal with defatted or intact cuttlefish meal as a protein source. Feeding broodstock with frozen raw krill after previously being fed control diet resulted in elevation of the percentage of buoyant eggs and normal larvae. Equally good results were obtained by substitution of cuttlefish liver oil in the control diet with 2.5% krill polar lipid or 2.5% krill nonpolar lipid. However, neither defatted krill meal nor fat-soluble fraction of cut-tlefish meal showed the good effect on the egg quality.
Consequently, the superior quality of cuttlefish meal to the white fish meal as a protein source for red seabream broodstock diets was reconfirmed. And the effective components in raw krill, aiding the reproduction of red seabream, are suggested to be the polar and nonpolar lipid fractions. In addition, vitamin E was also found to have the same efficiency for improvement of the egg quality.
