This study aims to examine the significance of the reception and consumption of Japanese entertainment by the general public in China-especially the Chinese youth. The first section analyzes the intentions of the Japanese government and companies that send Japanese entertainment troupes abroad, whereas the second considers the intentions of the Chinese government and Chinese corporations in their reception of Japanese popular culture. The third section describes, as an example, the management, administration, and activities of a sister group for Japanese "idols" that was launched in Shanghai. It attempts an elementary examination of the way in which youth construct their identity through activities in this group, focusing on statements that specific members have made since joining. The results elucidated the potential of limitless and, open-minded growth and development of self for individuals that have little to do with national borders, ideologies sand the economic strategies of corporations, as well as the universality of socio-educational effects that are created by interactions within youth groups.

The purpose of this paper is to consider to the cultural influence of globalized entertainment. Using theexample of Japanese-style idol training groups that have expanded into China, as well as the activities oftheir fan communities, we looked at the non-formal educational aspects of their activities that are thekey points of this study. For this purpose, the authors have been gathering data and observingparticipants in Shanghai for a number of years. In Section 1, the authors provide their responses toquestions and points of criticism raised in investigative and study groups both inside and outside school, and discuss the intellectual framework of this study. In Section 2, based on materials gathered online andlocally, a detailed study is made of the activities of fans and their independently organized supportgroups. In Section 3, we present a study on the significance of fan activities for individual fans, based ontranscripts of interviews with fans of relevant idol groups, to conduct an analysis from a more detailedperspective. Through this process, our findings indicate that being a fan of an idol—an activity that canbe viewed as simply a “leisure-time activity for geeks” —actually promotes self-development though itssocial activities, and has significance in terms of lifelong learning.

This paper presents an investigation of the true meaning and influence of Japanese popular culture, especially around idols, for Chinese youth. First, I investigate in the second section how Chinese youth and adult society perceive idols. Then, in the third section, I take a look at how the youth actually enjoy observing Japanese idols and attempt to relate to them as well as what sort of interaction and crossfertilization is occurring as a consequence of this: we can see a generational and cultural gap between the values of adult society and those of the youth community. In fact, Chinese youth are a prominent example of the casual transgression of an idealized image stipulated by adult society. What sort of influence does this popular youth culture prevailing in China and its psychological penetration have on society? This is a point that must be considered when adopting "Cool Japan" as a policy and trying to export culture. Simultaneously, this study suggests that the Japanese idol training system holds the potential for pluralistic interaction, growth, and meetings among youth; in other words, it holds a socioeducational significance.
