Oral mucosal lesions associated with foreign body injuries can have various origins, but traumatic lesions of the oral mucosa caused by other organisms are rare. Such cases thus require special knowledge for diagnosis. We report a case of oral stings from spermatophores of Todarodes pacificus, the Pacific squid. The patient was a 31-year-old woman who cooked the internal organs of a raw T. pacificus for lunch. She experienced a sharp pain on the tongue and buccal mucosa when eating the organs. On checking the oral cavity, she identified multiple white objects with a worm-like appearance sticking into the tongue and oral mucosa. Attempts to remove these objects herself were unsuccessful. She then visited the emergency department of our hospital. We examined the oral cavity and found multiple white objects appearing to be parasitic worms sticking into the tongue and oral mucosa. Attempts to remove the objects with forceps were unsuccessful because of tight attachment to the mucosa. Removal was thus achieved by making slight incisions under local anesthesia. The specimens showed a white spinate shape and were about 4mm long. Endoscopic examination of the upper digestive tract after treatment of the oral cavity revealed no additional foreign bodies. The final pathological diagnosis was spermatophores of T. pacificus.

Granular cell tumors are rare soft tissue tumors, derived from Schwann cells. About half of them occur in the head and neck, but a case with tumor arising in the zygomatic region has not been reported to our knowledge. We report a case of granular cell tumor arising in the zygomatic region. A 57-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of cheek swelling. MRI findings showed a benign tumor, so the patient wished follow-up. However, the tumor gradually grew in size for 11 months, as was confirmed by MRI. Since the patient desired removal of the tumor, the operation was performed by the intraoral and subcilial approach. The histopathological diagnosis was granular cell tumor. Judging from the operative finding, we supposed the origin of the tumor to be the zygomaticofacial nerve which is a branch of the maxillary nerve. Twenty-six months after the operation, there was no sign of recurrence.

Hunter glossitis is a relatively rare disease caused by vitaminB12 deficiency. We clinically studied six cases of Hunter glossitis caused by vitamin B12 deficiency. All cases complained tongue pain and dysgeusia, and they showed atrophy of lingual papillae and vitamin B12 deficiency in blood examination. Macrocytic anemia was found out in five cases but one case was not anemia. Two cases were under treatment of chronic gastritis and three cases were total gastric resection in past. Untreated atrophic gastritis was found out in one case by upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. We treated all cases by oral administered vitamin B12 therapy 1500 µg/day. After this therapy, red smooth tongue, oral pain, dysgeusia and level of vitamin B12 in blood were improved in all cases. It is popular that the treatment of vitamin B12 deficiency is based on parenteral vitamin B12 administered intramuscular injection. But recently, a few reports documented positive results following oral vitamin B12 therapy. As the result of these cases, oral administered vitamin B12 therapy was effective to Hunter glossitis.

A glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is a rare odontogenic cyst, classified as a new developmentalodontogenic cyst by the WHO in 1992. It frequently arises in the anterior region of the mandible. Histopathologically, GOC is lined by epithelium of varying thickness, which contains mucous cells and vacuolations. Some casesshow clinically invasive growth, leading to a high rate of recurrence despite surgical excision. Some studies haveestimated that the overall recurrence rate is 27%.We report a case of GOC arising in the right mandibular third molar region. The patient was a 34-year-old man.Surgical excision was performed. One year 4 months after the operation, the prognosis was good, with no signs of recurrence.

Color Doppler imaging findings were reviewed for 36 lymph nodes in 13 patients with oral cancer who underwent neck dissection. Seventeen lymph nodes were histologically diagnosed as metastatic and 19 as non-metastatic. Color flow was observed in 6 nodes, all of which were non-metastatic. None of the 17 metastatic lymph nodes had color flow. Al-though 13 of the 19 non-metastatic lymph nodes also had no detectable color flow, all of these nodes were less than 10mm in diameter.<BR>These results suggest that normal or inflammatory swollen lymph nodes have color flow detectable with color Doppler imaging, and that metastasis to these nodes leads to the loss of color flow. We conclude that color Doppler imaging facilitates the diagnosis of cervical lymph node matastasis.
