English education in “Society 5.0” requires not only teaching language, but also fostering students who, as their own problems, seriously face complex social challenges of the new era. This paper proposes practical methods of English education to raise students’ awareness of Diversity & Inclusion and SDGs. We did a questionnaire survey on “English and society” among university students at five universities and a junior college, and saw that there was a relation between students’ attitude toward Diversity & Inclusion and their willingness to learn English. This paper also discusses, as examples of complex and changing situations of English, positive and negative roles of English in multi-lingual India and spread of automatic English translation in English classes in Japan. We conclude we need “inclusive college English education” in classes.

本研究は、東海圏の工業大学の初年次学生を対象とした英語教育システムTEEE(Tokai English Education for Engineering Students)の開発を目的とする。東海圏の英語教員によるネットワークを作成し、現在のESP教育の問題点を明らかにし、開発した新しい教育方法と教材を実施する。研究の結果、工業大学の初年次学生は、工学や英語の知識は乏しいが、概して工学への強い学習動機が備わっているため、TEEEによるESP教育は効果的である可能性が示唆された。
