Two biologically active coumarins, scopoletin (1) and isofraxidin (2), along with known coumarins, esculetin (3), fraxetin (4), esculin (5) and fraxin (6), were newly isolated from the bark of Fraxinus japonica BLUME (Oleaceae). On the other hand, the bark of F. mandshurica RUPR. var. japonica MAXIM gave only known coumarins, fraxetin (4), fraxinol (7) and mandshurin (8).

From the methanolic extract of leaves of Apocynum venetum L. var. basikurumon HARA, eight constituents were isolated and identified with respective authentic samples as succinic acid, chlorogenic acid, isoquercitrin, hyperoside, D-(-)-bornesitol, sucrose, β-sitosterol, and β-amyrin.

In order to clarify the mechanism of the antihypertensive effect of Eucommia leaf (Eucommia ulmoides Oliver) extract (ELE), ELE was partitioned into two fractions, water eluted fraction (H_2O ext.) and methanol eluted fraction (MeOH ext.)(Eueommia leaf glycoside), by using a Diaion HP-20 column. The antihypertensive effects of ELE and two fractions were investigated by their intravenous (i.v.) administration to SHR. Transient antihypertensive effects were shown in ELE and MeOH ext. and their effects were respectively attenuated by i.v. injection of atropine, suggesting that the antihypertensive effects of both ELE and MeOH ext. might be mediated via the muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. On the other hand, H_2O ext. showed the sustained antihypertensive effect which was not attenuated by i.v. injection of atropine. This result suggested that two types of components which have different mechanisms of antihypertensive effect are contained in ELE.

Ten phenolic compounds, isofraxidin (1), (+)-syringaresinol-di-O-β-D-glucoside (2), syringin (3), chlorogenic acid (4), isofraxidin-7-O-β-D-glucoside (5), 2,6-dimethoxy-p-benzoquinone (6), (+)-pinoresinol-O-β-D-glucoside (7), (+)-syringaresinol-O-β-D-glucoside (8), (+)-pinoresinol-di-O-β-D-glucoside (9), and (+)-medioresinol-di-O-β-D-glucoside (10), were isolated from the stem bark of Acanthopanax senticosus HARMS and identified, respectively.The aquenous extract of the stem bark exhibited a prolonging effect on the exercise time to exhaustion in chronic swimming stressed rats. The effect on the exercise time in the chronic swimming stressed rats was respectively tested for compounds 2 and 4,which are major constituents of the stem bark. As a result, it was indicated that compound 2 is the compound responsible for part of the pharmacological effect which the aqueous extract of the stem bark showed.
