アレルギー性鼻炎患者(AR)における昆虫アレルゲンの症状への関与を調べるため,560例のARを対象にしてガ,ユスリカ,ゴキブリを含む13アレルゲンに対するIgE抗体を測定した.また,65例の患者でこれら3種の昆虫の鼻誘発試験を実施した.ガ,ユスリカおよびゴキブリに対するIgE抗体保有率はそれぞれ32.5%,16.1%,13.4%であった.これらIgE抗体保有率には,地域,年齢,治療および合併症による差は認められなかった.鼻誘発試験で陽性と判定される割合は,RASTクラスが高いほど多くなる傾向があった.とくにゴキブリ,ガにおいて,RASTクラス3以上では,各々55.6%および61.5%が鼻誘発試験に陽性を示した.昆虫間のIgE抗体価の相関を検討したところ,ガ,ユスリカ間には強い相関が認められ共通抗原性を示唆したが,ゴキブリ,ガ間およびゴキブリ,ユスリカ間では強い相関は認められなかった.また,いずれの昆虫もヤケヒョウヒダニおよび室内塵に対するIgE抗体価との相関は認めなかった.以上の結果,日本においてガ,ユスリカ,ゴキブリは,アレルギー性鼻炎を起こす原因となっていることが示された.

Oseltamivir, a widely used anti-influenza drug, inhibits virus neuraminidase. A mammalian homologue of this enzyme is expressed in the brain, yet the effect of oseltamivir on central neurons is largely unknown. Patch-clamp recordings ex vivo revealed that oseltamivir enhanced spike synchronization between hippocampal CA3 pyramidal cells. Time-lapse multineuron calcium imaging revealed that oseltamivir and its active metabolite evoked synchronized population bursts that recruited virtually all neurons in the network. This unique, so-far-unknown, event was attenuated by muscarinic receptor antagonist. Thus, oseltamivir is a useful tool for investigating a new aspect of neural circuit operation.

Enterococcus faecalis is one of the major lactic acid bacterium (LAB) species colonizing the intestines of animals and humans. The characteristic odor of the volatile oils obtained from both the liquid medium after incubation (MAI) and liquid medium before incubation (MBI) in the cultivation process of E. faecalis was investigated to determine the utility of the liquid medium. In total, fifty-six and thirty-two compounds were detected in the volatile oils from the MAI (MAI oil) and MBI (MBI oil), respectively. The principle components of MAI oil were 2,5-dimethylpyrazine (19.3%), phenylacetaldehyde (19.3%), and phenylethyl alcohol (9.3%). The aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA) method was performed using gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O). The total number of aroma-active compounds identified in the volatile oil from MBI and MAI was thirteen compounds; in particular, 5-methyl-2-furanmethanol, phenylacetaldehyde, and phenylethyl alcohol were the most primary aroma-active compounds in MAI oil. These results imply that the industrial cultivation medium after incubation of E. faecalis may be utilized as a source of volatile oils.
