3, 3"-Di-O-acyl-4"-O-sulfonyl and 3, 3"-di-O-acyl-4"-O-alkyl derivatives of spiramycin I were synthesized and evaluated by four parameters, antibacterial activity, affinity to ribosomes, lypophilicity and therapeutic effects. Among them, 3, 3"-di-O-acetyl-4"-O-mesyl and 3, 3"-di-O-acetyl-4"-O-methylspiramycin I having relatively small substituents at 4"-position were the most effective in mouse protection tests, and the results were comparable to acetylspiramycin.

Dental enamel thickness continues to feature prominently in anthropological studies of ape and human evolution, as well as studies of preventative oral care and treatment. Traditional studies of enamel thickness require physical sectioning of teeth for linear and scaled measurements. Recent applications of microtomographic imaging allow scientists to employ larger and more diverse samples, including global samples of recent humans as well as fossil hominin teeth. Unfortunately, little is known about the degree of enamel thickness variation among human populations, particularly across the dentition. This study employed microtomography to virtually image, section, and quantify the average enamel thickness of a sample of clinically extracted Indonesian canine and premolar teeth. This virtual sample was compared to physically sectioned African and European teeth. The results demonstrate that average enamel thickness is similar among human dentitions; no significant differences were detected within tooth positions, which is surprising given developmental differences between European and African canines and premolars. When populations were combined, differences were found in average enamel thickness between maxillary and mandibular premolars, and between canines and premolars within both dental arcades. This finding is potentially due to differences in premolar morphology and a trend of increasing enamel thickness distally throughout the dentition. The finding of limited population variation within tooth positions and significant variation between tooth positions is consistent with previous two-dimensional and three-dimensional studies of human molar enamel thickness. Average enamel thickness in canines and premolars does not differ between the sexes in our sample, although male teeth tend to have larger enamel and dentine cross-sectional areas, enamel–dentine junction lengths, and bi-cervical diameters. Males have significantly greater dentine area and enamel–dentine junction length than females for maxillary canines and premolars. The results of this study suggest that enamel thickness values in mixed-populations of humans are appropriate for comparisons with fossil hominins.

Japan started full-scale renewable energy after two oil shocks. The government take the efforts into the Sunshine plan (new energy) and Moonlight plan (energy conservation). We promoted research and development of industry, academia and government collaboration. However, MITI just focused on sunlight only in renewable energy in 1993. Since 2005, it was a dark ages for renewable energy, partly excluding biomass. The introduction of renewable energy is now progressing with the introduction of the FIT system in 2012.

Jean Baptiste de Lamarck (1744-1829) maintained that characteristics that were acquired during an organism's lifetime are passed on to its offspring. This theory, known as Lamarckian inheritance, was later completely discredited. However, recent progress in epigenetics research suggests it needs to be reexamined in consideration of DNA methylation. In this article, I summarize our observations, which support Lamarckian inheritance. Initial experiments indicate that (1) artificially induced demethy-lation of rice genomic DNA results in heritable dwarfism, and (2) cold stress induces extensive demethy-lation in somatic cells of the maize root. Based on these results, I propose the hypothesis that traits that are acquired during plant growth are sometimes inherited by their progeny through persistent alteration of the DNA methylation status.

The control efficacy of a novel fungicide, cyflufenamid, (Z)-N-[α-(cyclopropylmethoxyimino)-2,3-difluoro-6-(trifluoromethyl) benzyl]-2-phenylacetamide was studied. In field trials, a low dosage (25 ppm) of cyflufenamid (10%WG) showed excellent efficacy in almost all plants against powdery mildew caused by various pathogens in agricultural production. Cyflufenamid also had high efficacy against brown rot in stone fruits caused by Monilinia fructicola. The fungicidal properties of cyflufenamid were investigated to elucidate the high performance of the compound in the field. Pot tests against cucumber powdery mildew indicated that cyflufenamid has excellent preventive, curative, long residual, translaminar and vapor phase activities at low concentrations. © Pesticide Science Society of Japan
