“Ego-experience” is a subjective experience, engraved in the memory, of the awakening of the ego, and was posited by German adolescent psychologists in the early 20th century. In this study, I report on survey results for 215 respondents to a 2005 questionnaire on ego-experience, one of two I administered to students of the same girls’ school, as well as a comparison over time for 622 respondents to a 1982 questionnaire. The results showed that there was no change in the percentage of girls who recall some ego-experience, and those who recall the age of initial experience as about 10. On the other hand, some remarkable changes were observed. Particularly, fewer respondents chose experience in the “ego-consciousness” category as core experiences, suggesting that the subjective world of contemporary adolescents is characterized by less internal confrontation and dialogue. Finally, this paper examines the necessity of taking these changes into account in psychotherapy.

This paper reports on the practices of the student counseling room of a medium-sized private university in a crisis situation where the university community introduced remote classes and restricted campus access to prevent the spread of COVID-19. By providing a hybrid of various counseling methods, including a web conference system (Zoom), this institution was able to continue its college counseling services without interruption. The factors considered for success were accurate information obtained from the crisis management committee, prompt information sharing and decision making within the student counseling room, and dissemination of the activity policy to the university. As a result, the trend of the use of the student counseling room over the past 10 months shows that in the first semester, there were more distance counseling cases than in-person counseling ones, but in the second semester, the ratio was reversed. This indicates that students prefer in-person counseling in situations where they have a choice, and that in-person meeting is important for students' psychological growth. From the perspective of the individuality and diversity of the COVID-19 disaster experience, there should be many more situations in which the findings of the college counseling will be useful in the future.

In recent years, the number of students to whom verbal counseling techniques are not effective are increasing. Their subjectivity is not established, and they have difficulties in telling their inner sense or affection. Subjectivity is emerging in way of 'words' connecting with their internal affect. So, for the students who have immature subjectivity, it is supposed to be beneficial to contact them through emotional synchronization, such as the maternal affect attunement. Two typical cases of student counseling are showed to describe how they attain such 'words'. Further, the management of free-space in the student counseling room, some practices of small-sized group program, and some workshop-style subjects in the regular curriculum are considered to be an important factor to nurture 'words' connecting with students' inner sense and affect.
