We propose a super-resolution (SR) simulation system that consists of a physics-based meteorological simulation and an SR method based on a deep convolutional neural network (CNN). The CNN is trained using pairs of high-resolution (HR) and low-resolution (LR) images created from meteorological simulation results for different resolutions so that it can map LR simulation images to HR ones. The proposed SR simulation system, which performs LR simulations, can provide HR prediction results in much shorter operating cycles than those required for corresponding HR simulation prediction system. We apply the SR simulation system to urban micrometeorology, which is strongly affected by buildings and human activity. Urban micrometeorology simulations that need to resolve urban buildings are computationally costly and thus cannot be used for operational real-time predictions even when run on supercomputers. We performed HR micrometeorology simulations on a supercomputer to obtain datasets for training the CNN in the SR method. It is shown that the proposed SR method can be used with a spatial scaling factor of 4 and that it outperforms conventional interpolation methods by a large margin. It is also shown that the proposed SR simulation system has the potential to be used for operational urban micrometeorology predictions.

This study proposes a deep learning approach called SolaCam to accurately estimate solar radiation from the images captured by cameras. The proposed SolaCam performs deep learning by utilizing both image features and theoretical maximum solar radiation that vary with time and location. The trained model is capable of accurately estimating solar radiation on the ground surface from sky images captured by smartphones, fixed-point cameras, and other devices. The developed SolaCam can use a remote sensing function, which estimates solar radiation, on inexpensive camera-equipped devices.

We have proposed a deep convolution neural network (CNN) approach for the accurate estimation of the cloud coverage (CC) from images captured by a consumer camera, i.e., snapshot pictures. This CNN can successfully estimate the CC to within the level of the inherent error in the training dataset. A segmentation-based method using a linear support vector machine (SVM) is shown to be unable to distinguish between water surfaces and the sky, while the present CNN can correctly distinguish between them, possibly because the CNN can understand the positioning of components in the images; the sky is over a water surface. The present CNN can also be applied to photo-realistic computer-graphic (CG) images from numerical simulations. Comparisons between the CNN estimates for camera images and for the CG images can provide useful information for data assimilation, and thus contribute to numerical weather forecasting. The CC is a sort of far-field (remote) information. The present CNN has the potential to allow consumer cameras to be used as remote weather sensors.

本研究の目的は、一般市民を対象に質問紙による調査を実施して、「子どもの貧困」に対するイメージや貧困が子どもの成長に与える影響(問題)等に関する認識の実態を把握することであった。調査の結果、市民の約8割が国民の生活水準の低下(貧困化)を感じ、また4人のうち3人が子どもの貧困問題を身近な問題として捉えていることが分かった。また「貧困」に対するイメージについては、「身近」で「怖いもの」という認識を抱いている者が多く、さらに「貧困」が子どもに与える影響(問題)については、「進路選択・進路実現の問題」、「心理(こころ)の問題」、「衣食住の問題」が上位に挙げられた。子どもがごく普通の生活をするために必要な物や事柄(必需品)では、「病気やケガをした際に病院へいく」、「遠足や修学旅行などの学校行事への参加」、「休日等で家族と一緒に過ごすこと」などがすべての子どもに絶対与えられるべきであるものとして上位にあがった。その一方、教育の機会や教育用品に関しては、経済的な理由で与えられなくても仕方がないという意見も多くみられた。このような結果を踏まえて、考察では、「関係性の貧困」と「機会の貧困」が子どもの成長や将来に負の影響を与えることについて述べ、相対的貧困がもたらす本質的な問題について論じた。
