Elthusa moritakii sp. nov., a branchial parasite of the deepwater bullhead sculpin Ereunias grallator, is described from Japan. The new species is morphologically similar to Elthusa propinqua (Richardson, 1904), but can be distinguished from the congener by a combination of characteristics of ovigerous females, including pereopods 5–7 with unexpanded carina, number of robust setae on maxilla, greatest width of pleon, shape of pleopods, and length of pleotelson. Further, new host records of E. propinqua are here reported. This species was recently collected from five macrourid fish species from Japan, including the grenadiers, Coelorinchus jordani, C. longissimus, the spearnose grenadier, C. multispinulosus, the unicorn grenadier, C. productus, and the Sagami grenadier, Ventrifossa garmani.

A phrurolithid spider species, Phrurolithus splendidus Song & Zheng 1992, is newly recorded from Japan. This species resembles P. pennatus, but can be distinguished from the latter by male tibial apophysis with thin finger-shaped apex, and spermathecae located behind openings.

The lithobiomorph centipede Lithobius (Lithobius) forficatus (Linnaeus 1758) is here reported for the first time in mainland Japan. All specimens were collected in Obihiro City, eastern Hokkaido, Japan. This species has a rather widely morphological variation and seems to inhabit synanthropic areas. The present study is the first record of indoor invasion of lithobiomorph species in Japan.

He visited to Ulu Gombak, Malay Peninsula, Malaysia on April and May 2007, and he recalled three times of tick bite during traveling. The first tick bite was by one nymph infested on the inner side of the brachium of the patient. After a few days, erythema with a diameter of 2 cm was found at the site of tick attachment. Pain of the site remained for 20 days. The second tick bite was by larvae infested on the skin surface of the abdomen, basal portion of the thigh, and scrotum of the patient. He felt a pain at the moment of tick infestation. The pain remained for 15 days. We report the occurrence of a gynandromorph of the funnel-web spider Allagelena opulenta collected by a Malaise trap set in a Japanese cedar plantation on Mt. Aikodake, Yakushima Island, Japan. This specimen presents a transverse gynandry, with the anterior half of the body male and the posterior one female. The epigyne is abnormally developed, and the shape of the epigynal opening is deformed compared to that in normal females. This is the first case of gynandromorphy observed in this genus.

Endemic spotted fever group rickettsiosis was reported in Shimane Prefecture, Japan. From an analysis of 14 clinical cases found in the endemic area, the infectious agent of spotted fever group rickettsiosis was identified as Rickettsia japonica. In this study, we also found that Rickettsia japonica was highly infected with the vector tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis, in the endemic area. These findings suggest that the high incidence of rickettsiosis in Shimane Prefecture can be explained by the high prevalence of Rickettsia japonica among Haemaphysalis longicornis ticks.
