The surfaces of lipid droplets (LDs) constitute major sites of regulated accumulation and degradation of lipid in cells, and hence play important roles in lipid homeostasis of the whole body. CGI-58 (also called α/β hydrolase domain-containing protein 5 (ABHD5)) is a member of the α/β-hydrolase family of proteins and is a product of the causal gene of Chanarin–Dorfman syndrome (CDS), which is characterized by excessive storage of triacylglycerol (TG) in various tissues. CGI-58 is distributed predominantly on the surface of LDs and plays a crucial role in TG degradation in cells. In the process of lipolysis, CGI-58 coordinates with several proteins, including perilipin, a member of the PAT family of proteins, and adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL), a putative rate-limiting enzyme for TG degradation in adipocytes. Besides its role in adipocytes, CGI-58 is involved in lipid degradation in various tissues, including those of skin and liver. This review focuses on the functions and protein interactions of CGI-58 on the surface of LDs in the regulation of fat mobilization in cells.

Feline morbillivirus (FmoPV) is a new virus species and its detection is important, since correlation has been reported between FmoPV virus infection and tubulointerstitial nephritis in cats. Here, we report a real-time reverse transcription (RT)-PCR system that can detect the FmoPV L-gene sequence with more than 10-time higher sensitivity than a conventional PCR system, resulting in detection of less than 10 copies of the template DNA. The total FmoPV positive rate of urine samples from veterinary clinics and hospitals in Japan was 15.1% (25/166) using this system. This study demonstrates usefulness of the real-time RT-PCR system for detection of FmoPV for cat urine samples.

In this paper, the estimation method of impact probability for Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) is investigated. The impact probability of NEOs has been calculated by a linear target plane analysis and a Monte-Carlo method. Since the collisions of NEOs with the Earth are quite sensitive problems, the calculations have to be confirmed by everal methods. A linear target plane analysis cannot be applied if the position uncertainty is too large since the uncertainty ellipsoid is not a good assumption in this case. A Monte-Carlo method can be used for a large position uncertainty, but the computational cost is high. The limitation of using a linear target plane analysis is investigated using the Monte-Carlo method for the close approach of 99942 Apophis (2004 MN4). The relation between impact probability and observation accuracy is investigated by analyzing the close approach of 2007WD5.

OMOTENASHI is a 6U CubeSat that will be launched in 2019 by the Space Launch System (SLS) with the objective of landing on the Moon. The CubeSat is planned to perform two deterministic maneuvers. The first maneuver (DV1) by gas jet propulsion system transfers the probe from the nominal SLS trajectory to a lunar targeted trajectory. The second maneuver (DV2) is applied by the solid rocket motor before landing to counteract the vertical component of the S/C velocity. The high approach speed at the Moon, combined with large errors induced by the solid motor, requires the probe to approach the Moon with a shallow Flight Path Angle (FPA). If the angle is too steep, expected errors in the DV2 may cause the probe to crash. However, a shallow FPA increases the probability of a Moon-flyby or collision with the local topography. In this paper, we present a design method for Earth-Moon transfer trajectory robust to orbit determination (OD) and DV1 execution errors. First step consists of a grid search to determine the nominal DV1 vector with four candidates obtained. Subsequent error analysis suggests the need for a Trajectory Correction Maneuver (TCM). For the two scenarios of OD error provided by the navigation team, an error analysis was conducted including the TCM. Two realistic OD error scenarios were considered: 30 min or 3 hours of two-way Doppler and range measurement. Error analysis conducted considering TCM shows the need for 3 hours of OD to achieve nearly 100% of transfer success rate.

The influence of transfusion of lymphokine-activated T killer cells (T-LAK) on inflammatory responses was examined in dogs after laparotomy. Plasma C-reactive protein (CRP) level, cell numbers of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) and T lymphocyte subsets (CD3+, CD4+ and CD8+) and mRNA expression levels of cytokines including interleukin (IL)-2, IL-12, IL-4, IL-10 and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were measured in dogs with (T-LAK group) or without (control group) a single T-LAK administration immediately after laparotomy. The plasma CRP level initially increased and then decreased to the normal range at 7 days after laparotomy in the T-LAK group, which was earlier than in the control group. The expression level of IL-10 mRNA showed a marked postoperative increase and was significantly higher than the preoperative level on day 7 (P<0.05), whereas the level in the control group showed no clear change after laparotomy. A significant increase in IL-2 mRNA expression level in the T-LAK group was observed on day 14, which was two weeks earlier than in the control group (P<0.05). These results suggest that T-LAK therapy in dogs after laparotomy leads to earlier resolution of postoperative inflammation by production of an anti-inflammatory cytokine (IL-10) in the early phase of the postoperative period and earlier restoration of cell-mediated immunity related to cytokine production by PBMCs.
