Internet of Things (IoT) devices are widely used in various fields. However, their limited computing resources make them extremely vulnerable and difficult to be effectively protected. Traditional intrusion detection systems (IDS) focus on high accuracy and low false alarm rate (FAR), making them often have too high spatiotemporal complexity to be deployed in IoT devices. In response to the above problems, this paper proposes an intrusion detection model of IoT based on the light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM). Firstly, the one-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) is used to extract features from network traffic to reduce the feature dimensions. Then, the LightGBM is used for classification to detect the type of network traffic belongs. The LightGBM is more lightweight on the basis of inheriting the advantages of the gradient boosting tree. The LightGBM has a faster decision tree construction process. Experiments on the TON-IoT and BoT-IoT datasets show that the proposed model has stronger performance and more lightweight than the comparison models. The proposed model can shorten the prediction time by 90.66% and is better than the comparison models in accuracy and other performance metrics. The proposed model has strong detection capability for denial of service (DoS) and distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. Experimental results on the testbed built with IoT devices such as Raspberry Pi show that the proposed model can perform effective and real-time intrusion detection on IoT devices.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, non-coding RNA molecules that inhibit protein translation from target mRNAs. Accumulating evidence suggests that miRNAs can regulate a broad range of biological pathways, including cell differentiation, apoptosis, and carcinogenesis. With the development of miRNAs, the investigation of miRNA functions has emerged as a hot research field. Due to the intensive farming in recent decades, chickens are easily influenced by various pathogen transmissions, and this has resulted in large economic losses. Recent reports have shown that miRNAs can play critical roles in the regulation of chicken diseases. Therefore, the aim of this review is to briefly discuss the current knowledge regarding the effects of miRNAs on chickens suffering from common viral diseases, mycoplasmosis, necrotic enteritis, and ovarian tumors. Additionally, the detailed targets of miRNAs and their possible functions are also summarized. This review intends to highlight the key role of miRNAs in regard to chickens and presents the possibility of improving chicken disease resistance through the regulation of miRNAs.

Background:Excess dietary salt is strongly correlated with cardiovascular disease, morbidity, and mortality. Conversely, potassium likely elicits favorable effects on cardiovascular disorders. In epidemiological studies, increased plasma osteoprotegerin (OPG) concentrations are associated with atherosclerosis and vascular deaths. Our study was designed to examine the effects of salt intake and potassium supplementation on plasma OPG levels in normotensive subjects. Methods and Results:The 18 normotensive subjects were selected from a rural community in China. They were sequentially maintained on low-salt diet for 7 days (3 g/day, NaCl), high-salt diet for 7 days (18 g/day), and high-salt diet with potassium supplementation for 7 days (18 g/day of NaCl+4.5 g/day of KCl). High-salt intake enhanced plasma OPG levels (252.7±13.9 vs. 293.4±16.1 pg/mL). This phenomenon was abolished through potassium supplementation (293.4±16.1 vs. 235.1±11.3 pg/mL). Further analyses revealed that the OPG concentration positively correlated with 24-h urinary sodium excretion (r=0.497, P<0.01). By contrast, OPG concentration negatively correlated with 24-h urinary potassium excretion (r=0.594, P<0.01).Conclusions:Salt loading can enhance the production of circulating OPG. Potassium supplementation can reverse the effects of excessive OPG. Our study results may improve our understanding of the roles of salt and potassium in the risk of cardiovascular disorders.
