We measured the Raman spectra of CO2 fluid at 30 MPa and room temperature (19.1–21.3°C). The spectra showed peaks attributed to the CO2 combining various isotopes such as 12C16O2, 13C16O2, and 12C16O18O. The relative ratio of 12C16O2 to 12C16O18O peaks represents the oxygen isotope ratio of CO2. To evaluate the precision of the peak ratios, we measured the CO2 Raman spectra at different exposure times. We examined the standard deviation (1 σ) of the peak intensity ratios and area ones for 20 measurements at each exposure time. The standard deviations of the intensity ratios and area ones were 2.7 and 3.1%, respectively, at a maximum exposure time of 494 s, conversion to peak intensity of 12C16O2 yields about 2,000,000 counts. The uncertainties are 2.5–3 times greater than expected from the noise of a CCD camera and photon statistics. The oxygen isotope ratios (δ18O) of natural samples have a range of variation of about 16.6%. Compared to that value, the precision we obtained from this study is very small. Raman spectroscopy can be combined with microscopy to analyze areas as small as approx. 1 μm in diameter. Therefore, oxygen isotope measurement using Raman spectroscopy has potential for application to natural samples as a new method for small CO2 fluids such as fluid inclusions.

Using anticancer drugs as an example, we examined the possibility of reusing residual drugs. The use of residual drugs is not widespread because of concerns regarding bacterial contamination. We mixed anticancer drugs with bacteria and investigated their effects on bacterial growth. The anticancer drugs carboplatin, paclitaxel, etoposide, irinotecan, methotrexate, and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) were mixed with Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Serratia marcescens, and Escherichia coli. After a certain period, the number of bacteria was counted. Irinotecan showed no antibacterial activity, whereas 5-FU showed high antibacterial activity against the bacteria tested. The 5-FU also showed a minimum inhibitory concentration value in the range of 8–80 μg/mL, depending on the bacterial species. The 5-FU dose-dependently inhibited S. aureus growth at more than 0.8 µg/mL. Since protein synthesis systems are reportedly antibiotic targets, we used a cell-free protein synthesis system to confirm the mechanism of the anticancer agent’s antibacterial activity. The 5-FU and methotrexate had direct inhibitory effects on protein synthesis. It is suggested that even if the residual drugs are contaminated with bacteria, there will be no microbial growth or microbes will be killed by the drug. With careful monitoring, the 5-FU could potentially be used for antimicrobial purposes.

Objective This study examined whether or not the disease control in Japanese patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) had improved in recent years and its possible association with altered balance between the use of glucocorticoids and immunosuppressants. Methods We enrolled Japanese patients with SLE who visited our medical center during 2013-2017 (Group A, 75 patients) and compared them with patients encountered during 1999-2003 (Group B, 69 patients; not overlapping with Group A). Patient background characteristics, doses of glucocorticoids, and the use of immunosuppressants at the times of SLE onset and disease flares were reviewed from the medical records. Disease flare was defined as new British Isles Lupus Assessment Group 2004 A or B scores in at least one system. Results Lupus nephritis and neuropsychiatric manifestations were less frequently observed in Group A than in Group B (p=0.042 and p=0.045, respectively). Although the initial glucocorticoid dosage was similar between the groups, the inclusion rate of immunosuppressants in the initial SLE treatment was significantly higher in Group A than in Group B (56% vs. 6% in Group B, p<0.001). The median number of SLE flares per person-year was significantly lower in Group A than in Group B (0 vs. 0.3, respectively, p<0.001), and a propensity score-matched analysis indicated the association of SLE flare with the non-use of immunosuppressants in the initial treatment (p=0.012). The rates of infectious diseases and other complications were similar between the groups. Conclusion The recent aggressive use of immunosuppressants in Japan resulted in a reduction in the rate of SLE flare.

In this work, we proposes a simple yet effective method for improving performance of local feature matching among equirectangular cylindrical images, which brings more stable and complete 3D reconstruction by incremental SfM. The key idea is to exiplictly generate synthesized images by rotating the spherical panoramic images and to detect and describe features only from the less distroted area in the rectified panoramic images. We demonstrate that the proposed method is advantageous for both rotational and translational camera motions compared with the standard methods on the synthetic data. We also demonstrate that the proposed feature matching is beneficial for incremental SfM through the experiments on the Pittsburgh Reserach dataset.

Simultaneous electrochemical determination of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and ascorbic acid (AA) at a carbon nanotube electrode is presented. The discrimination of NADH and AA is conducted with the difference of peak potential by differential pulse voltammetry. Two well-distinguished anodic peaks, +0.56 and +0.26 V, due to NADH and AA are observed. The characteristics of those peaks were independent from each other. The attained characteristics for simultaneous determination of NADH and AA are (i) NADH measurement at the concentration range of 0.030 – 2.0 mM in the presence of 1.2 mM AA, and (ii) AA measurement at the concentration range of 0.030 – 2.0 mM in the presence of 2.0 mM NADH.
