Some people with pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) can hardly express their own thoughts in language. Sometimes, they have been considered as a communication disorder. However, since the word “communication” is usually defied as an interaction between at least two persons, it is doubtful to attribute problems happened within a particular communication to one side. In this study, I collected text data from a mi-croblog of one person who has been diagnosed as PDD and having difficulty to express her own thoughts in language, in order to investigate how the microblog had changed the way of communications. The results of the text data analysis showed that the par-ticipant expressed what she wanted to say by referring and utilizing remarks of others. The possibility and implications of removing the difficulties from their communication through the process of “curation” was discussed.

山口情報芸術センター・通称「YCAM(ワイカム)」は,山口市にあるアートセンターである.2003 年の開館以来,メディアテクノロジーを用いた新しい表現を模索しており,展覧会や公演,映画上映,ワークショップなど多彩なイベントを開催している.YCAM の取り組みは,メディアアートやパフォーミング・アーツを軸にしつつも,近年では,スポーツや遊び,食,さらにはバイオ・リサーチまで拡がりを見せている.これらの取り組みの基盤には,YCAM の内部に設置された研究開発チーム(YCAM InterLab)の活動がある.本稿では,まずYCAM の概要やInterLab の紹介を行い,続いて,芸術表現,教育,地域といった3つの分野における具体的な作品や展覧会の事例を紹介する.そして,最後に,近年飛躍的に発展するバイオテクノロジーに取り組みはじめた「YCAM バイオ・リサーチ」プロジェクトについて紹介する.

We have found that the envelope waveform of the initial part of P waves changes systematically with magnitude and epicentral distance. In order to represent the envelope waveform quantitatively we introduced a simple function of the form of Bt·exp(-At). Two parameters A and B can easily be determined by the least-squares method. The parameter B defines the slope of the initial part of the P-wave envelope and A is related to the amplitude growth or decay with time. When A is positive, B/(Ae) gives the maximum amplitude where e denotes the base of natural logarithm. This case is typical for small earthquakes, indicating that the initial amplitude increases sharply and decays quickly soon after the P-wave arrival. When A is negative, the amplitude increases exponentially with time. This is a characteristic of large earthquakes.We have found from the analysis of actual seismic data that log B is inversely proportional to the epicentral distance Δ even though the dispersion of data is somewhat large. This relation seems to be independent of earthquake magnitude and thus, by using this relation, we can roughly estimate the epicentral distance immediately after the P-wave arrival. Then, we can estimate the magnitude easily from the formula, similar to the conventional magnitude-amplitude relation, M=α·logVmax+β·logB+γ, where Vmax is the P-wave maximum amplitude within a given short time interval (e. g., 3 seconds) after the P-wave arrival. For M7- and M8-class earthquakes whose rupture duration reaches 10 sec or more, we need to estimate the magnitude repeatedly with time as the amplitude increases.The decrease of the parameter B with distance may be caused by anelasticity of the medium, scattering and geometrical spreading of P waves during propagation.

The purpose of this research was to clarify the factors influencing the approval or disapproval and evaluative opinions of the public concerning separation of dispensing and prescribing functions. We conducted a Web survey with 2006 participants (September 2016). We conducted multiple logistic regression analysis and quantitative analysis of freely recorded their reasons about approval or disapproval. The approval rating was 29.2% in persons who had had some prior experience with at the pharmacies (n=1,778) and 41.9% in participants who made regular clinic visits and always filled prescriptions at the pharmacy (n=430). Multiple logistic regression analysis of the data of participants who visited pharmacies (n=1,778), identified that compared to participants who experienced side effects (OR=1.34), the frequency of used pharmacies (OR:Odds ratio=1.47), the filling burdened by having to fill prescriptions at the pharmacy (OR=0.19, 1/OR=5.18), there was a significant positive association for the approval. Analysis of qualitative data of the group that approved identified many labels related to ‘quality of results’, however no labels related to ‘quality of results’ were generated in the group which disapproved. Public approval or disapproval of non-hospital based prescription is mainly determined based on the burden or inconvenience incurred (due to waiting times, mobility-incurred time and energy, inconvenience associated with travel, inconvenience of repeated visits) when filling prescriptions at the pharmacy rather than on opinions regarding the pharmacy’s drug therapy service. Measures are required to increase the level of merit compared to the burden experienced in the use of pharmacy.

The extremely active seismicity after the 2011 off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake (Tohoku Earthquake) caused serious issues for the Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) system in Japan. Multiple concurrent earthquakes generated many false alarms due to the failure of correctly determining the source location. In this study, we propose a method to distinguish multiple concurrent events for EEW. We used the outputs of a B-delta method and principal component analysis, together with P-wave arrival times and amplitudes of triggered stations. The information of non-triggered stations is also used to constrain the locations. We constructed a likelihood function using the source parameters and solved this optimization problem using the particle filter. The appropriate choice of a likelihood function improves the accuracy of the location determination, and the probabilistic framework evaluates the uncertainty of the hypocenters. We applied this method to 72 events for which warnings were issued after the Tohoku Earthquake. The performance of EEW was greatly improved, reducing the false alarms from 22 to 0. The percentage of inaccurate warnings was also reduced from 66% to 6%.

The ability to metabolize xenobiotics in organisms has a wide degree of variation among organisms. This is caused by differences in the pattern of xenobiotic bioaccumulation among organisms, which affects their tolerance. It has been reported in the veterinary field that glucuronidation (UGT) activity in cats, acetylation activity in dogs and sulfation (SULT) activity in pigs are sub-vital in these species, respectively, and require close attention when prescribing the medicine. On the other hand, information about species differences in xenobiotics metabolism remains insufficient, especially in non-experimental animals. In the present study, we tried to elucidate xenobiotic metabolism ability, especially in phase II UGT conjugation of various non-experimental animals, by using newly constructed in vivo, in vitro and genomic techniques. The results indicated that marine mammals (Steller sea lion, northern fur seal, and Caspian seal) showed UGT activity as low as that in cats, which was significantly lower than in rats and dogs. Furthermore, UGT1A6 pseudogenes were found in the Steller sea lion and Northern fur seal; all Otariidae species are thought to have the UGT1A6 pseudogene as well. Environmental pollutants and drugs conjugated by UGT are increasing dramatically in the modern world, and their dispersal into the environment can be of great consequence to Carnivora species, whose low xenobiotic glucuronidation capacity makes them highly sensitive to these compounds.
