Scent and music are acknowledged to generate physiological and psychological changes on people, and the combination of scent and music is exerted in diverse situations. However, effects and utilization of scent and music in confined resting environment have not been examined exhaustively. To investigate the effects of scent and music on people’s moods and stress in confined resting areas, towards a better understanding about the olfactory and auditory environment, we tested six combinations of scent and music. The results indicated that music hardly changed people’s stress evaluation, but had significant effects on moods. On the other hand, scent dramatically affected both moods and stress assessment. Profound comprehension about scent and music will offer further inspiration for the design of olfactory and auditory environment in confined spaces, and new knowledge and perspectives gained through this exploratory study will serve to the thorough and supplementary research in the future.

Recognizing facial expressions and estimating their corresponding action units’ intensities have achieved many milestones. However, such estimating is still challenging due to subtle action units’ variations during emotional arousal. The latest approaches are confined to the probabilistic models’ characteristics that model action units’ relationships. Considering ordinal relationships across an emotional transition sequence, we propose two metric learning approaches with self-attention-based triplet and Siamese networks to estimate emotional intensities. Our emotion expert branches use shifted-window SWIN-transformer which restricts self-attention computation to adjacent windows while also allowing for cross-window connection. This offers flexible modeling at various scales of action units with high performance. We evaluated our network’s spatial and time-based feature localization on CK+, KDEF-dyn, AFEW, SAMM, and CASME-II datasets. They outperform deep learning state-of-the-art methods in micro-expression detection on the latter two datasets with 2.4% and 2.6% UAR respectively. Ablation studies highlight the strength of our design with a thorough analysis.

Wooden panels that are made of glueing elements with various appearances, involve numerous visual combinations. Although craftspeople believe that homogeneous patterns are desirable, it is helpful to clarify the acceptability of heterogeneous patterns from the perspective of sustainability. This study classified individuals based on their evaluation tendencies and examined their preferences. We performed a subjective evaluation of 17 sample images of 109 participants using an online survey. Consequently, it was found that patterns evaluated as “even” are generally more preferred. However, the classified clusters showed differences in their evaluation tendencies. For instance, the general consumer group confirmed only “heterogeneity” and the expert group felt “naturalness” from all samples. Additionally, there was a cluster that might have derived additional value from more homogeneous patterns. We conclude that an even appearance is desired, and additional information illustrating the characters of the wooden panel is needed to release unique patterns.

Waiting is an inevitable part of life and the spaces in which we wait can contribute to either improve or worsen the experience. This paper covers the process and results of “The waiting room”, analyzing if the presence of specific smells has a significant impact in how the room and the waiting experience are perceived. Two different odorants were selected, lavender (relaxing) and orange (stimulating); 63 participants from 32 different countries were assigned into three groups (between-groups approach): Control (unscented), Orange and Lavender. Results show that both scents affected the room and waiting experience evaluation in different ways and overall increased the surrounding space perception compared to the unscented condition. Participants exposed to lavender scent were inclined to rate higher the ‘psychological’ properties of the room such as pleasantness and warmth; in addition the lavender-evoked memories were emotion based. Participants exposed to orange scent tended to rate higher the ‘physical’ properties of the room such as brightness and height; orange-evoked memories were object based. Lavender scent had a stronger influence in space perception than orange, suggesting the relevance of congruence and coherence between scent and physical environment when incorporating it as a tangible design tool in architecture.

A mathematical model for the hit phenomenon in entertainment within a society is presented as a stochastic process of interactions of human dynamics. The model uses only the time distribution of advertisement budget as an input, and word-of-mouth (WOM) represented by posts on social network systems is used as data to compare with the calculated results. The unit of time is a day. The calculations for the Japanese motion picture market based on to the mathematical model agree very well with the actual residue distribution in time. The model is applied also to weekly TV drama. We show that prediction is possible in appearance to the number of news and TV and stage with regard reputation of stage actors in Japan in this paper.

To reveal the actual situation of luxury fashion products in the online market, this study sheds light on dynamic pricing observed from the difference between regular and selling prices. Regular price distributions indicated the prestige of luxury fashion brands, with traditional French and Italian brands appearing in a higher rank. Two emerging luxury brands also had a higher social status. This result suggests that the mobility of creative talents allows emerging brands to inherit the brand equity of traditional and prestigious brands. This paper also analyzed dynamic pricing strategy in luxury fashion products by category. The results revealed 67.4% of dresses were discounted with the large markdown ratio even for online luxury fashion stores, however, 69.1% of bags were sold at regular price. A time fluctuation model of product value to interpret the dynamic pricing difference between dresses and bags are also discussed.

It is widely believed that there is a relationship between scent and music. For example, there is congruence among certain scent, music, and consumers' buying behaviors according to previous study. However, only limited number of scents and music have been analyzed, which is not sufficient to conclude common characteristics of congruence between scent and music in arousal dimension. Consequently, we investigated the effect of scent on the mood evaluation of music by using four kinds of scents and two music samples. Overall, our results showed the arousal quality of scent would effectively modify the perceived arousal level of music, and scent which was congruent with music on arousal could also increase the affirmation of music. These results therefore underline the potential of scent to enhance listening experience, and those working in the music industry may feel progressively further optimistic in adopting appropriate scent to achieve advanced listening experience.

Quantitative analytical framework for investigating the relationship between the design of 3D products and subjective impressions regarding shapes was developed by using a combination of spherical harmonics (SPHARM) and multivariate analysis. SPHARM is a parametric surface description that uses spherical harmonics as its basic function. The shape of liquid soap bottles was focused as a typical example of 3D product design. We converted 3D surface data on shape of 22 liquid soap bottles into multivariate coefficients using SPHARM, in order to extract their major morphological features. Then, we performed a principal component analysis of these coefficients. The extracted morphological features were related to the aspect ratio in the frontal plane, thickness and roundness. Subsequently, participants rated their subjective impressions of bottle shapes on a semantic differential scale. We examined relationships between major morphological features of bottles and their subjective impressions. Results indicated that this methodology is effective for appreciating the positioning of a product's shape design, as well as for systematically understanding the correspondence between shapes and subjective impressions of products.

Recently biometric authentication systems have become open and large scale thus leading to its widespread use. However, no systematic study has been done with regards to the safety of such systems. On the other hand, cancelable biometrics, the intentional distortion of biometric characteristics to protect sensitive data in biometric authentication systems, has been widely studied. Many methods have been proposed for cancelable biometrics technology, but the security criterion in such is indefinite. In this paper, we consider cancelable biometric techniques from the perspective of the safety of the system. We also verify the effect of the security precaution of the liveness detection techniques using Fault Tree Analysis, a risk evaluation method about data protection and spoofing prevention techniques.

The present study analyzed YouTube sustainable design communities (with an emphasis on Academia) in English and Spanish through webometric methods. Findings included differences between the networks in terms of speakers and popular videos. Network centralities revealed that English videos form a community with multiple interconnections between universities and other stakeholders, while Spanish videos are mostly small groups and isolated nodes. Despite being well connected, videos related to universities were less popular than videos unrelated to universities. Nevertheless, videos related to students were key in spreading sustainable design content in both networks. The findings also suggest some factors that may be playing in favor of English based content.

The study aimed to examine the physiological and psychological effects of a recently manufactured relaxation chair in healthy adults. This study performed a randomized crossover-controlled trial. I compared two chairs, the relaxation chair and a normal chair as the control condition. Twenty young male adults participated in this study. Results showed that immunoglobulin A, an indicator of anti-stress activity, increased significantly after sitting on the relaxation chair (P<0.05), although the CgA was not significantly different among the four conditions of both chairs. Additionally, each Profile of Mood States score of Anger-Hostility, Confusion-Bewilderment, Tension-Anxiety, and the Total Mood Disturbance subscales decreased significantly, showing the greatest decrease after participants sat on the relaxation chair (P<0.05). Furthermore, the visual analogue scale score for comfort increased significantly after sitting on the relaxation chair, compared to the other three conditions, respectively (P<0.05). Moreover, using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the state anxiety scores significantly decreased after sitting on the relaxation chair (P<0.05) among the four conditions, and the trait anxiety scores significantly decreased after sitting on the relaxation chair, related to each pre-condition of both chairs (P<0.05). These results indicate that sitting on the relaxation chair can temporarily alleviate physical and psychological stress in healthy adults.

Kawaii describes Japanese culture and is used all over the world to express emotional feeling. This study hypothesized that kawaii feelings can be classified as excited and relaxed responses when watching photographs. Heart rate measurements were performed for subjects viewing exciting kawaii, relaxing kawaii, and uninteresting photographs. Statistical tests were conducted to relate heartbeat modulations and photograph conditions. Exciting kawaii photographs enhanced heart rates, while their relaxing counterparts did not increase heart rates to the same levels, validating the initial hypothesis.

This study aimed to identify the psychological variables that can mediate an influence of color focality on color preference in modern Japanese culture and to specify the pattern of the mediated influence. The potential mediators were 22 appraisal dimensions and the psychological processing fluency (PPF) of colors. We conducted two experiments with native Japanese speakers, which measured these variables. Data analyses showed that gracefulness is the only appraisal dimension that can mediate an effect of color focality on color preference. Specifically, focality negatively influenced the appraisal of gracefulness and gracefulness positively impacted preference. Although a U-shaped quadratic relationship exists between focality and PPF, no relationship was found between PPF and preference. Therefore, PPF’s role as a mediator is not supported. Our literature survey suggests that the focality-gracefulness-preference relationship may be caused by the “noisy color phenomenon,” which is a cultural phenomenon existing in many color-using areas in modern Japan.

In this study, we used 6 different fragrances to better understand the tendency of scents to elicit a sense of omotenashi (hospitality) in elderly people. To first understand how elderly people perceive scents associated with feelings of omotenashi we performed an impression evaluation using SD method of 22 adjective pairs. We then analyzed the results taken from a questionnaire survey we conducted on 51 elderly Japanese men and women using a factor analysis, and extracted the factors that represent sensations of scents which produced a sense of omotenashi. Our subsequent examination of the main underlying factors indicated that scents with sensations of freshness, adulthood and pleasure hinted a sense of omotenashi in scents for elderly people. We also noted differences in the way the scent was perceived compared to young people.

Protective frame is a feature of experience in which individuals find a situation as protecting them from negative consequences, and enables them to experience positive rather than negative emotions. We examined whether fictionality of stimuli acts as a protective frame. Participants rated their positive and negative emotions induced by fictional or non-fictional film stimuli including fearful or disgusting content, and completed a questionnaire measuring their mood. Results indicated that disgusting-fictional stimulus induced weaker disgust compared to disgusting-non-fictional stimulus, while fictionality showed no such effect on fearful stimuli. Stronger perceived fictionality was associated with stronger interest in the film and urge to continue watching the film. We suggest that fictionality decreases disgust and increases positive emotion towards negative stimuli.

We examined the effect of mindfulness meditation on self-motion perception (vection). We measured the strength of vection after two conditions: with- and without-meditation. The results showed that vection was significantly weaker in the with-meditation condition than without-meditation condition. We speculated that mindfulness meditation induced lower arousal level in the participants and such modulation in the participants' self-sensation could inhibit vection. We conclude that vection strength can be modulated by our mental states.

The problems facing elderly who are living independently, are considered to be one of the most important motivations of the activity recognition research. The advances in sensing technologies allow collecting several types of data and communicate it wirelessly. However, most existing activity recognition systems requires pre-calculated pattern recognition models. This paper lays the theoretical foundations of a real-time methodology for activity and emotional recognition based on body and environment sensors simultaneously, then tackles one aspect of the method which is the path estimation using chest-mounted IMU sensor, for which a zero velocity update criteria is proposed. Finally path estimation results for sitting down, laying down, falling down and standing up are discussed.

The market of e-book has been growing fast and showing a great potential recently. However, the traditional printed books are still predominating the major market. Most people still prefer printed book despite e-book's advantages. In this study, we conducted an experiment involving 34 participants to determine the difference between e-book and printed book in terms of user experience. We hypothesized that different contents would influence the result, therefore we chose two different genres of books: magazine and the Japanese comic book - manga. Participants were asked to read on E-Reader and printed book, then asked to evaluate their experience using questionnaire. ANOVA, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, multiple regression analysis and principal component analysis were conducted to analyze the difference between each group and correlative factors that affected overall evaluation. The result indicated that printed books were rated higher than e-books, and manga was more applicable to e-book than magazine.

This study focused on the impressions of robot design in the Japanese robot anime series, “Mobile Suit Gundam”. In Experiment 1, the impressions of robot design were measured using semantic differential method. Results of the factor analysis showed that the impressions of the robot design were illustrated by a three dimensional space, which was spanned by ‘Massiveness,’ ‘Coolness’ and ‘Roundness.’ ‘Moe’ is one of the most important keywords in robot design. The results of a multiple-regression analysis showed that Moe was felt deeply for a massive, cool and box-shaped robot. In Experiment 2, the differences between robots of scale models and super-deformed models were investigated. The results showed that the scale models were designed to be cool and the super-deformed models were designed to be cute.

In this paper, we propose an automatic Waka generation system with custom database, based on texts given by the user. The proposed text-based system has better compatibility with Waka poem, improving consistence and logicality of generated poems. Kansei information is also considered to make poems natural and closer to the emotions the user wants to express. Presented by interactive generation experiments, the proposed system can generate Waka poems reflecting stylistic and grammatical requirements. Meanwhile, the poems are also with related meanings and emotions to the original text and some poeticness.
