In the last few years, SfM (Structure from Motion) based on photographs taken from UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) has attracted a tremendous amount of interest for the creation of DSM (Digital Surface Model) and other morphometric products. However, the accuracy of the derived DSM hasn't been sufficiently evaluated yet. Therefore, the present contribution aims to compare UAV-based SfM data against TLS (Terrestrial Laser Scanning) derived DSM data. The fieldwork was carried out on a wave-cut bench in Kanagawa Prefecture (Japan). Results have indicated that DSM data derived from UAV-SfM can create a point cloud of comparable density to the one created by TLS, with a maximum deviation of 10 cm from the TLS data. The UAV-SfM technique has a great potential for a wide range of application, because of its high data accuracy, low acquisition and operational costs, allowing high spatial and temporal data recording.

In the 8th year of the reign of Taisho (1919), with the arrival of the French tutorial unit, the Japanese Army started its aerial photographing.In the 12th year of Taisho (1923), the Shimoshizu military aviation school to which the French tutorial unit gave direct training, took aerial photographs of Tokyo immediately after the great Kanto earthquake. They played an important role in deciding the restoration plan. Triggered by this fact, 6 big cites including Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka took the aerial photographs for the use of city planning, in the following 13th year of Taisho. The military aviation schools carried out the job in the guise of the military training.In the 8th year of Showa (1933), demands for the aerial photograph raised as application of the City Planning Act was extended to cover the new industrial cities. In the 12th year of Showa (1937) . the Japan-China war became intense and the cooperation from the military aviation schools went unattainable. The situation encouraged the birth of private companies undertaking the aerial photography. In the same year the Military Secret Protection Act was enacted and the aerial photographs were kept out of the public eyes as a part of military secrest. The city of Osaka has preserved the negatives taken in the years of 3rd and 6th of Showa in spite of the strict restriction and regulation of the Army.

We have developed a point-based rendering application with high-speed spatial interpolation using a point cloud to generate virtual reality (VR) data called LiDAR VR. This application can not only transform from a point cloud to VR data but can also regenerate missing point data in the rendered result from a selected viewpoint. Moreover, we have focused on the following features of the LiDAR VR generation. First, panorama imagery can be generated automatically from many viewpoints from one observation data set. Second, it is possible that a spatial interpolation with rendering results can reduce the processing task. These features have been verified using case studies.

A number of distinct signatures suspected of relating to Maya relics are observed over northern Yucatan Peninsula, serendipitously, during the geological study on JERS-1/SAR imagery. Among other things, ancient roadways ("sacbe"in indigenous language) are prominent being expressed as linear features, mostly with dark tones, throughout the whole region. Preliminary interpretation shows that these archaeological lineaments might also be indications of putative causeways, moats, walls and the like constructed by Maya people in the past. Another interesting patterns to be noted are numerous bright spots which suggest remains of human dwellings consisted of aggregation of huge mounds, courtyards, buildings including pyramids, from place to place. No verification with on-site ground check is practised yet ; however, the result of correlation with existing data seems to be encouraging to demonstrate the unique potentiality of JERS-1 imagery in radar archaeology, particularly, in terms of penetration through vegetative cover.

GMSのCCTデータのパラメータ部と画像の一部のフォーマット変換とリスト処理の手法を開発した。<BR>このフォーマット変換は, データコントロールパラメータと記述文コントロールパラメータを用いて, バッファメモリ上で編集しながら処理を行うものである。<BR>このフォーマット変換を用いれば, 見出し, ページ, 項目番号, 記述文, データの位置, データの長さ, 副記述文を付加し文字型に変換されたパラメータ部のデータが得られる。また, 画像データ部の1ラインのダンプリストが10進数と16進数で得られる。<BR>この手法は, LANDSAT-MSS, LANDSAT-RBV, NOAAのCCTデータにも応用できる。<BR>LANDSAT-RBVとNOAAに関しては, すでにフォーマット変換を実行している。<BR>この変換手法を利用することによる利点はつぎのとおりである。<BR>1) パラメータ部のデータの内容が理解しやすくなる。<BR>2) 画像データのダンプリストにより, 画像のレベルを解析以前に知ることができる。<BR>3) 将来確立が予想される, リモートセンシングデータの統一的なデータ管理システムに応用できる。

SLATS is the first test satellite of JAXA to demonstrate operations at “super low orbit”below 400 km altitude, almost never used for long-life remote sensing. Lower altitudes will bring benefits for Earth observation such as higher resolution optical imaging and higher Signal/Noise ratio of Synthetic Aperture Radar. Small and High Resolution Optical Sensor (SHIROP) is a panchromatic camera to achieve under 1 meter resolution from super low altitudes. Pointing accuracy and image quality, which are influenced by atmospheric drag, ion engine and Time Delay Integration (TDI), are going to be evaluated. Techniques acquired by SLATS are planned to be used for future regional observation.

A new elevation labeling method is proposed which can be applied to contour images including broken lines and inconsistencies caused by loss of contour lines and/or existence of irrelavant lines. Because conventional elevation labeling methods need ideal contours as an input data, broken lines and inconsistencies must be eliminated from the target contour image before elevation labeling. This elimination process (editing) has been done by human operator conventionally. The time-consuming human operation is a large problem in DEM generation from topographical maps. The proposed method has been developed In order to remove the above human operation. In the proposed method, a probablistic relaxation approach is used. That is, elevation probabilities are assigned to each contour, and then the probabilities are propagated to neighbor contours so as to decrease local conflicts.As a result, consistent labeling can be achieved even if the target contour image may include broken lines and some inconsistencies.

The present paper proposes an algorithm to automatically extract the edges of buildings from terrestrial LiDAR data for the sake of three-dimensional modeling. Because three-dimensional LiDAR data are difficult to process for the extraction, first, two-dimensional data (<i>r<sub>xy,z</sub></i>) is obtained from the original threedimensional data. Next, two gravity points were calculated using several points in the neighbor of the target point in order to reduce the effects of the noise contaminated in the data. Finally, the interior angle of the target point with two gravity points was defined as an indicator for the edges. The results show that the algorithm can function robustly to extract the edges. While the proposed algorithm is based on the two-dimensional processing, it can be applied for the three-dimensional coordinate by merging different scan line results. It is concluded that the proposed algorithm is potential to apply for the three-dimensional modeling of buildings.

In order to teach and work effectively at survey and photogrammetry, one should understand basic semiological abbreviations which derived form foreign languages to Japan. This paper describes that several technical abbreviations in surveying correspond closely with Dutch words which were imported into Japan in the Edo era (1600-1867) .It was considered that, as established theory, symbols“B”and“L”were German abridgments of“Breite”and“Länge” (i.e. latitude and longitude), respectively, by force of making an amendment form French triangulation system to German triangulation system which had employed by the military serivice of Japan in 1882.Nevertheless, “B”and“L”also coincide with Dutch terms of“breedte”and“lengte..which were transfered to Japan at least since 1803. Moreover, it reveals that symbols“B”, “P”and“C”being utilised for eccentric triangulation might be said as abridgments of Dutch terms form“bevordelijk standpunt”for instrumental center, “piramidaale centrum”for center of measuring tower (namely“pyramid”) and“centrum van geodesische monument”for center of hurried mark, respectively.
