Background: Remote monitoring of Cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) improves patient safety. However, operating such remote monitoring systems (RMS) has increased workload of medical staffs. Biotronik EHR DataSync® software supports medical staffs by integrating CIEDs information and data using international standards. The software has a potential to enhance clinical usefulness, reduce errors and lighten the workload. The aim of this study was to develop the automatic electronic medical record (EMR) system for CIEDs and to assess its effectiveness. Methods: We self-built the EMR system that automatically stores varied numericals and data from the RMS and its programmer. We examined accuracy of the automatic EMR system and reduction of the workload. Results: A total of 3,011 data was successfully collected and integrated, and the success rates of data collection were 99.8%. Moreover, the automatic EMR reduced 3 hours and 55 minutes per year of the workload for dealing CIEDs.Conclusion: The self-built automatic EMR system could integrate CIEDs data successfully. This could help to reduce the workload of medical staffs..

Aim: The commercialization of cellular products for the regenerative medicine business has already begun. However, the profitability between the regulated aseptic production cost and insurance reimbursement price might be a major hurdle. Automated culture devices are developed for improving the cultural- and cost-efficiency. In this study, we investigated the automated culture devices to discuss the approach to overcome the existing problems and simulated the reduction of operating time with culture assist devices.Method: Web and literature surveys were performed to investigate the automated culture devices and their functionalities. Based on the investigation, the simulation was conducted by integrating the operation time in each culture steps via culture assist devices.Result: Automated culture devices for adherent cells, floating cells, and liquid handlers were developed. In Japan, the devices for adherent cells were majorly produced, and these devices used single- or double-arm robots for complete automation. A reduction of 22.5 min in the medium replacement step was achieved after simulation with the culture assist devices for injection and drainage. Conclusion: Since the present cellular products were approved of working with humans, the culture assist device for working with human is preferable and can contribute in reducing the working hours and cost.

Cell-phones have a possibility to interfere with medical equipment, and using a cell-phone is restricted in some or all areas in many medical institutions. Cell-phone jamming equipment (CJE) has been introduced in critical areas to prevent cell-phone use. The CJE that were developed for medical use will not interfere with medical equipment nor other communication systems. There are many such devices that one can easily get on the internet or by mail order. This study investigated the malfunction of irradiated medical equipment and Wireless LAN (WLAN) by that type of CJE. We investigated 20 medical devices and 3 WLAN routers. The CJE interfered with four types of medical equipment and all WLAN routers that were investigated. One syringe pump raised an occlusion alarm and stopped infusion at a maximum distance of 22 cm from the CJE. One WLAN router was disconnected at a maximum distance of 6.2 meter. The maximum interference distance of medical equipment was comparatively smaller than that of the WLAN routers. Therefore, serious malfunction of medical equipment by CJE is probably not threatening. However, the malfunction of WLAN might affect clinical work using networks, because some WLAN routers or communication systems were susceptible to interference by CJE.

A new technology called estimated continuous cardiac output (esCCO) uses pulse wave transit time (PWTT) obtained from an electrocardiogram and pulse oximeter to measure cardiac output (CO) noninvasively and continuously. This study was performed to evaluate the accuracy of esCCO during exercise testing. We compared esCCO with CO measured by echo Doppler aortic velocity-time integral (VTIao_CO). The correlation coefficient between esCCO and VTIao_CO was r = 0.87 (n = 72). Bias and precision were 0.33 ± 0.95 L/min with a percentage error of 30.2%. And the correlation coefficient between change in esCCO and change in VTIao_CO was r = 0.75 (n = 70). The esCCO could detect change in VTIao_CO larger than 1 L/min with a concordance rate of 88.2%. The areas under ROC curves to detect VTIao_CO changes more than 15% and 30% were 0.81 and 0.91, respectively. Polar plots show that the mean polar angle was 2.2° and radial limits of agreement were ±43.6°. The trending ability of esCCO is comparable with that of currently available arterial waveform analysis methods. In this study, the validity of esCCO during exercise testing was assessed and shown to be acceptable with respect to agreement and trending ability compared with the echo Doppler.
