This research aims at verifying the effectiveness of the river revetment work with porous concrete for the restoration of ecosystem and is based on a site investigation on the restoration of ecosystem at river revetments of precast and cast-in-place porous concrete. As a result, the restoration effect of ecosystem was confirmed with time after construction. Moreover, it was suggested that the succession of vegetation may possibly be kept in the midst by adjusting the void content and that the river revetment work with porous concrete may be applicable to biotope.

Roof planting on the artificial foundation is noticed as an effective method for heat reduction, including upward radiation decrease and sun light insulation, in the city center. In this study, basic experiments by use of Normalized Differential Vegetation Index and radiation temperature, derived from ground-based remote sensing, depicted that the positive relation between the heat reduction and health condition for the same vegetation species, Zoysia tenuifolia. This relation, however, was not observed among the different vegetation species. Remote sensing provides operative data for choosing plant spices and maintaining suitable vegetation conditions, which are vital for efficient roof planting.

In Laos, many mountainous roads in northern region have been suffering from severe slope failures. Main road slope protection technique is gabion work in Laos. However, gabions are expensive for Laos, because iron wires for gabions must be imported from foreign countries. Therefore, lower-cost road slope protection techniques have been demanded. Japanese road slope protection techniques by planting can be less expensive than gabion work, because they need only Lao domestic plants and material without depending on foreign products. Now, experimental works of road slope protection by planting are being implemented by Japan in Laos. The purpose of the experimental works is to study the applicability of Japanese techniques to Laos and develop low-cost slope protection techniques suitable for Laos.
