We developed a new maintenance jack used for a lift-up test of earth anchor. This machine jack is small and lightweight and it is easy to set it for the lift-up test. The liftup load obtained by lift-up tests using the new maintenance jack was the same value obtained by using a center hall jack. However the lift-up displacement obtained by the tests with the center-hall jack was larger than the displacement obtained with the new maintenance jack because of extension of tension-bar used for center hall jack. This new maintenance jack proposed in this paper can be convenience and can increase accuracy of lift-up tests.

This paper describes the land use and natural disaster with related to the topography and geology in Kozu island, Izu islands. There are three types of disasters based on the topography and geology except the damage from volcano eruption. Moreover, I summaries features of the damages from many volcanic earthquakes hit around the area of off shore near Kozu island on July, 2000. Finally, many investigations on the disaster protection and the way of living at various volcanic regions are expected.

Many debris disasters took place in Japan every year, caused by heavy rainfalls. The present situation and some problems of research and management for this kind of disaster are discussed. Topics pointed in this paper are as follows: 1) Failure's site prediction models must be constructed from the stand point of physical consideration with detailed boundary condition obtained by the field investigation, 2) The real time prediction model must be proposed by using the data obtained by various monitoring measurements, 3) Failure prevention works must be constructed by considering the life cycle coast, and 4) Some kind of management must be proposed to decrease or to mitigate the debris disasters, during the time of heavy rainfall, by the refuge system from potential dangerous area and by the traffic control system from potential dangerous road.

Restoration and preservation of this heritage is now going on as an international cooperation. The site works of the restoration and preservation are reported with a brief explanation on the Japanese efforts in the international cooperation. It is proposed that geotechnical aid is required to the restoration and preservation since most of structures in Arg-e-Bam are made of mud bricks.
