This research aims to clarify the significances and directions of music classes using popular music by focusing on their sociological and political contexts. The problem with practices related to popular music is that they do not capture the original essences of the music. Therefore, this research looks at the sociological and political contexts and the essences of the music, using the method of musicology after post-modernism. In doing so, this paper relies on British sociologist and popular music researcher Simon Frith and discusses the essences of popular music while comparing with those contexts of classical music.  Through discussions on issues surrounding sociological and political contexts, the following could be concluded. ① Popular music can not be thought of without considering sociological contexts. ② Popular music has transformational flexibility depending on mass media, so it tends to be linked to political contexts. To understand popular music from these essences gives students new viewpoints of understanding the music, so it has significance in that it may lead to the expansion of their view of music.  From this point of view, this paper pointed out some problems in the field of listening and singing that are often dealt with, and clarified the specific directions. The following consideration results were extracted. ① Many music classes using popular music focus on historical contexts. ② Many are the main objective of understanding features of the music. In these respects, the present situations in which the essences of music were not captured became evident. I can point out that the viewpoint and the directions to overcome this situation not only to understand the music from the historical and cultural contexts noted in the Instructional Guidelines but also by understanding the music from the sociological and political contexts.

The purpose of this research is to clarify, through case analysis, how children develop musical experience in music-making that originated in their direct experiences at the “Outdoor Nature School.”  The research method employed was as follows. First, the meaning of musical experience was prescribed according to J. Dewey's empirical theory. Next, the relationship between the children's direct experiences and musical experiences at the “Outdoor Nature School” was clarified. Then, music-making was conceived and put into practice in a Constructive Activity that progressed from the “Outdoor Nature School.” In addition, a practical analysis of the selected children - based on how they developed their musical experiences - was performed. Finally, the significance of the correlation between direct experiences at the “Outdoor Nature School” with the music lessons was discussed.  In conclusion, the music students created at the “Outdoor Nature School” continued as they incorporated direct experiences into their internal worlds. The students used those experiences as a model for expression. The students used these expressions as a goal to attain, which strongly influenced the development of their musical experiences.

The purpose of this study is to examine an effect of music learning aimed to be conscious of message property in lyrics. The researcher has analyzed the learning process of high school students and the value of Mr.Children's songs as teaching materials. The following results were obtained: 1. The student recognized lyrics as an element of music, and its interpretation changes their perception and susceptibility in various ways. 2. The learning process to categorize lyrics into "Four-field-frame" was effective for examining of message property in lyrics. Furthermore, we succeeded in creating positive attitudes on receiving a message by this method. Therefore, this kind of learning accords not only with instructional contents of music education, but it was a good opportunity for the students to realize varions of values. In other words, we may say that it was experience of "Deconstruction" to have an opinion of oneself through learning the popular music.

The purpose of this paper is to show the process of how students construct their extracurricular music activities. Students at school play or listen to music not only in classrooms but also at after school club activities. Using ethnography as the method, this paper will focus on high school students in popular (band) music clubs and find out how they construct their music activities. The followings are the points that have been shown in this paper. 1) When students construct and maintain their music activities at a popular music club, two contexts operate, "self-achievement of music goals" and "achievement of human relationships". Music club activities can be classified into four sections from the crossing of these two axes. 2) "Achievement of human relationships" is the key to construct and maintain music activities. It was difficult to continue playing music when concentrating on one's self-achievement. In order to construct and maintain the music activity, it was essential for students to make good relationship with other members. 3) When constructing and maintaining music activity, girls attach importance to constructing human relationships whereas boys have strong need for achievement in playing music and becoming more skillful, Girls also tend to play music not only for improving their skills but use music as a way to build relationship with others. 4) The result suggests that group formation would be a major key for successful music activities in school music education. We should not ignore the fact that human relationship plays an important role when actually constructing and maintaining music activity. In other words, forming groups of individual acting separately would not work. Group formation should be based on each individual's meaningful choice and each individual should be able to attach meaning to the group itself. Successful human relationship is the key for construction and maintaining music activities.

Working within the framework of Dewey's concept of “experience,” this paper aims to clarify the relationship between Aesthetic Education and Action Learning, and, moving beyond them, put forward a third theory : the Generating of Music. First, the structure of Dewey's concept of experience will be defined. Second, the theories and practices of Aesthetic Education, Action Learning, and the Generating of Music are examined in light of Dewey's concept of experience. Third, the verification of the Generating of Music as a third theory of music education is posited. The nature of experience is in the connection to the element of “trying” and “undergoing.” However, both Aesthetic Education and Action Learning focus only on “trying,” not “undergoing.” Thus, they disregard a child's inner world in the music teaching-learning process. To relate “trying” to “undergoing” can unify “doing” with “knowing.” This unification enables the lifelong development of musical experience. Moreover, to relate “trying” to “undergoing” can encourage the formation of a child's inner world and ensure the development thereof. The Generating of Music is a third theory of music education because of its relationship between “trying” and “undergoing”.

The purpose of this research is to develop teaching materials for singing that allow students to perceive and feel the linguistically distinctive characteristics of words. Moreover, it is hoped the materials can be used to introduce singing lessons in foreign languages at high schools, and make clear their effectiveness in an actual classroom setting.  The teaching materials have been created to emphasize the familiarity, the ease with which to feel the linguistically distinctive phonological vibrancy, and the availability of the sound quality of languages. The materials use the lyrics of the melody of the existing canon of 8 bars in five different languages - English, Italian, German, French and Japanese - titled “Let's sing in various languages”.  As a result of analysis and verification of the lessons using these teaching materials, their effectiveness has been recognized in two ways : (1) the teaching materials allow students to tackle the pronunciation of and feel a sense of familiarity with foreign languages while singing in them, and (2) the teaching materials allow students to perceive and feel the distinctive phonological vibrancy of foreign languages when comparing the languages.  As stated above, the effectiveness of the developed teaching materials has been confirmed for the purpose of research.

The staff and students of Fuzoku school have been fortunate enough to invite a local expert in Gagaku to teach and enrich our understanding of the traditional artform. We have been trying to create a celebration of the sunrise based on traditional Gagaku music and have been in need of some assistance. Thanks to the instruction and example of the guest teachers we have been able to evaluate the students understanding and skillls of Gagaku. As a result, we observed: 1. The students initially experienced difficulties and needed assistance, the guest teachers were able to support the students' request, and then the students overcame the problems. 2. The students had the opportunity to watch the visiting teachers perform and benefited even more by their example. Students' expression and understanding of the music developed because of their time spent with the visiting teachers.
