The issue of anti-intellectualism has been widely discussed in Japan for the last few years, but only a cursory glance has been given to Richard Hofstadter in this debate. This relative neglect is regrettable not just because this American historian is the author of Anti-Intellectualism in American Life(1963)but also because his intellectual life itself was a struggle against what he called anti-intellectualism in America. The purpose of this paper is to fill this gap; it also aims to induce Japanese intellectuals to discuss further about their own roles in the future of the Japanese society. This paper focuses on Hofstadter's scholarly life in mid-twentieth century America. His intellectual career had been guided by his strong sense of duty as an intellectual, which he acquired when he was still a junior scholar. In Hofstadter's belief the duty of intellectuals lies in resisting any social, political, and cultural forcethat coerces conformism, and also in defending the plurality of society. Anti-Intellectualism is surely his most important contribution in this regard, but this sense of mission also underlies in his other works.

McLuhan's "Understanding Media" is well known for its difficulty in understanding. Especially his concept of "hot / cool" medium is central symbol of difficulty and ambiguity of the book. In this article, I try to restructure the concept for better understanding and application of McLuhan's thought. I try to decompose the concept to three conceptual dimensions. Its first dimension is the dimension of social context: openness of interpretation. Its second dimension is the dimension of medium format: displacement easiness of medium. Its third dimension is the dimension of synaesthesia. On the third dimension, I propose that we should treat it as completely different dimension from "hot / cool" concept.

This study aims to investigate the working experience of a Thai employee in Japan. The interview was conducted after the interviewee's third-month working. Data are analyzed by the text mining. This paper focuses on two frequent words, shigoto (working) and dekiru (can), which have been extracted according to a part-of-speech. After presenting the collocation network of shigoto by the KH Coder, I point out the differences of work content values and work process values. I then examine the use distribution of dekiru (can) and dekinai (cannot). The result shows that the number of dekiru used in the utterances was fewer than that of dekinai; it reveals the presence of informant's consciousness regarding the ability possession.

Venus is one of the history plays by Suzan-Lori Parks. Its protagonist is Saartjie Baartman; known as the Hottentot Venus, she was taken from South Africa to London and put on a freak show in 1810 to die in Paris in 1816. Her remains were displayed at a museum in Paris until 1976. She symbolizes the victimization of African women in the colonial period. However, Parks's play reveals the possibility of the Venus being an accomplice, and has evoked much controversy. Venus is the play of fragmentation. Parks fragments the story of The Venus into 31 scenes. With a play-within-play and historical information inserted, the audience cannot grasp the play as a whole. The figure of The Venus is fragmented into several ones, too, from a girl in Africa, a freak on the show, to the medical object. Because of the fragmentation, what the audience can see on the stage is a ghost in history. At the same time, the audience is also fragmented into the voyeur, the spectator, and the accomplice. At the end of the play, The Venus asks for a kiss, that is, affectionate physical contact which a ghost could not wish for.

Situated to the east and the west of the Eurasian continent, the British Isles and Japan both possess cultures with root extending into the distant past. In both areas numerous genealogies have been fashioned from the seventh century, the time from which the first written materials are extant. These genealogies have played a central role in the determination of an awareness of history. This article introduces the Japanese translation of Kathleen Hughes's, The Early Celtic Idea of History and the Modern Historian: An Inaugural Lecture, (Cambridge University Press; Cambridge,1977, 24 pp.). Hughes treats the era during which Christianity, a religion that served on the basis of Celtic culture, was accepted by medieval Ireland. By examining numerous genealogies, Hughes examines the development of historiography. This report introduces Hughes's work in order foster a better understanding from a comparative perspective of the culture of genealogies and the development of historical writings in Japan.
