Some theoretical researches on the labyrinth packing which have been reported are usually on the ideal case. But in actuality these theories cannot be applied especially to the straight through type, because the effects of "carry over" are ignored. So J. Jerie introduced a simple theory on the labyrinth packing, in which the problem of "carry over" was taken into account However, there was a serious mistake in it, so it was corrected in this paper, theoretically introducing the more reasonable relations among the leakage, pitch of the throttling fins, clearance and the number of throttling fins. The results of this theory were compared with our experimental results and it was ascertained that they were in good agreement with the experiment. Moreover, by developing this theory, our experimental results, in which the leakage loss took the smallest value when the pockets were shallow rectangu1ar grooves, could be explained.

This research is a part of the investigation on the pneumatic spreader stoker, which conveys the slacks with air (or steam) through the conveying pipe to the nozzle, and spreads them on a fire grate. In this paper, we theoretically analised the accelerating state in a horizontal pipe and the flying distance on a fire grate of a particle, on the following assumptions. 1. The frictional force acting on a particle in a horizontal pipe, increases exponentially with time. 2. The jet stream does not diffuse, and the width of jet stream remains constant. as nozzleexit. 3. A particle is horizontally injected at nozzle-exit. Next, we studied them experimentally for several kinds of particles, and compared the theoretical results with experimental ones.

Experimentally, a rubber cord seems to have characteristics of a string on one hand, and of a beam on the other. Equation of motion with a term of damping was introduced as for a rubber cord. Then the solution was compared with the results of experiments, and the dynamical characteristics of rubber obtained as rubber vibration isolators were taken into account. 1) Vibration of rubber cord with a concentrated mass. Linear vibration with one degree of freedom was assumed. Elastic modulus E calculated from this experiment was compared with static modulus. Values of E are thought to be adequate when the ratio between dynamic and static moduli is taken into consideration. 2) Torsional vibration of rubber cord. Shear modulus G^- calculated in the same way was compared with the static shear modulus. 3) Free damped vibration of rubber cord. A term of damping was added to an ordinary equation of string. Results of experiments could be explained by an equation ∂2y/∂t2=a2(∂2y/∂x2)-2c(∂/∂t)(∂2y/∂x2), when an effective value of tension was taken into account.

On the vibrating mechanism of a valve which has an elastic plate installed parallel to the fluid flow, there are some monographs which dealt with musical instruments, such as clarinet and oboe, but the selfexcited vibration seemed to have been neglected. In the present paper it is described that when fluid passes through the narrow spaces, between the parallel plates which can move vertically by a spring action, an equation of motion of the valve and an equation of continuity which involves the compressibility of fluid are obtained. Then from them a differential equation of 3rd order is introduced and so by means of Routh's criterion, it is revealed that such a valve can give rise to a selfexcited vibration under a certain condition. An experiment verified this result by flowing air through this valve.
