The Institute for Research in Human Happiness is a sociaty of people researching the principles of human happiness. From the "private happiness" of each individual to the "public happiness" of the whole society and the whole world-this serve as a slogan for those gathered at the Institute. They hold that there are four principles of happiness: "love", "knowledge", "reflection" and "development". They have established a clear over-view of the universe. The world we are living in is not simply divided into the physical world and the spiritual world, but is involved in a multi-dimensional and high-dimensional universe. They are determined to initiate a salvation project throughout the world with Japan as its center.

In this paper I reviewed the studies of rumor published in Japan and abroad. The conditions of occurrence and spread of rumor, transformation of content of rumor, and the life cycle of rumor were considered. Rumor occurs when people are set in ambiguous situation. Psychologists assert that rumor is the projection of the motive or the sentiment of the people. Sociologists assent that rumor is the product of collective behavior, the interpretation of the situation by the people. But it is necessary to integrate these two approachs. It is often said that rumor is false information. But, if it is false, why people believe and communicate it to others? I think rumor is not false information, but necessary one. It presents reality which is different from those presented by the mass media. Rumor is unverified or unofficial information. When people need information and if they are not given official information, rumor occurs. And it also occurs when people don't believe official information. Rumor is the oldest medium of the mankind and it can not be rooted out as long as people talk with each other.

The aim of this paper is to show an experiment for deinstitutionalization movement in recent Japanese society. To this purpose, I take note of"AOISHIBA-NO-KAI"which was,is the important handicaped person's organization. This organization played a major role in deinstitutionalization social movement. As I showed in chapter3,"AOISHIBA-NO-KAI"becomes to be known as a radical protest organization of handicaped person in 70's. One of the leaders, Koichi Yokozuka, formulated the ideas of this organization like this: 1. We must recognize ourselves as CP (cerebral paralysis) 2. We must make self-assertion 3. We must deny so-called"love"and so-called"justice" 4. We will choose select any means of problem solution Based on these formulas,"AOISHIBA-NO-KAI"could lead the deinstitutionalization movement in recent Japan.

Shinnyoen is a new religion both for priests and laymen. The canon of the order is the Great Nirvana Sutra. Shinjo Ito, the Founder of Shinnyoen, together with his late wife, Mrs. Tomoji Ito, perfected the easy and modern interpretation of this Sutra. Shinnyoen has a unique way of training called "Sesshin Training." Today about 700 Reinoshas (spiritual leaders) are playing important roles. Through Sesshin Training, the cause of suffering can be known to a follower. Most evil cause which results in suffering can be eliminated by prcticing the Teaching. Thus, Buddha Nature innately held by all people can be developed.

Some 43 million Americans have one or more physical or mental disabilitis under the "Americans with Disabilities Act". ADA is targeting not only employment discrimination, but also discrimination in housing, public accomodations, education, transportation, and communication. The ADA prohibits virtually all employers from discriminating against a qualified individual with a disability in regard to job application procedures, hiring, adavancement, termination, compensation, and training. This paper examines rights of Americans with disabilities and rights of social welfare of Japanese with disabilities.

The works of Erving Goffman(1920-1980)have exerted an extraordinary influence over the development of modern social theory. This paper, the fourth one of my project `Giddens and Sociologists', aims to explore how Anthony Giddens, one of most famous sociologists in the contemporary world, used Goffman's social theory in systematically constructingstructuration theory. The main findings are as follows. First, through interpreting Goffman's works, Giddens found systematic construction in Goffman's social theory. His social theory is constructed on the basic theory of co-presence and interaction. Second, when Giddens wrote Constitution of Society in 1984, he tried to systematize structuration theory by using Goffman's social theory as one of interaction or social process. But as he failed in finding proper place of co-presence in social structure, Giddens could not succeed in systematically constructing structuration theory. Third, in his some works, Giddens took theoretical viewpoints to find proper place of co-presence in social structure. There are five main viewpoints of depicting society as congregation of locales or regions where co-presences develop.

Western leaders and mass media, including their Japanese counterparts, quick to claim "victory" in the cold war, never took a close look at the "losers". It was assumed that Russians would take to Western forms of economic and polifical development as eagerly as they had bought Western jeans and rock music tapes on the black market. The West's, that is, our biggest mistake was to have expected more than Russia was able to become. We did not fully understand how sick Soviet society was. There was, on top of everything else, no trusted new "elite" to replace the old. A truly non-partisan civil service has always eluded Russian governments. And the so-called democrats or reformers in power are themselves nomenklatura people, their children and their acquaintances. In a word, the system never collapsed after August, 1991, despite the appearance. S. Handelman, Canadian joumalist and author of ≪Comrade Criminal≫, elucidates, in his work, that the bureaucrats and managers of the former regime acquired new capital and political strength by exploiting the legal vacuum left by departing Communist authorities. Thus, a post-Soviet mafiya emerged, in corporating (1)the most entrepreneurial element of the former nomenklatura and (2)the gangster capitalism of the new. The Comrade criminal-the personification of this new force that combines the just mentioned two elements-is now setting the rules of game in Russia. Inspired by Mr. Handelman's sardonic insight, I try to trace here, both on local and national level, though in a very sketchy way, how the nomenklatura suruives. And by drawing this sketch, I want to clarify the essence of the organisation, that had been called the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

This paper consists of ten scraps which I scratched while reading Shunsuke Tsurumi’s works and others’ articles about him. This is not a well-thinking paper, but merely my memorandums or, I would like to say, a kind of “pensee”on Shunsuke Tsurumi.
