In this paper, I described how I had Japanese EFL students do pair work during the first semester. At the end of the semester the students were tested on a general English- proficiency test. Result showed that students at low proficiency level reaped the best benefit from pair work. According to the questionnaire, many students did their best, however, they felt that doing pair work was not much useful.

This paper describes a teacher’s practice of online lessons influenced by COVID-19 and students’ evaluation of them. Online lessons are evaluated higher than face-to-face lessons especially in terms of visibility and implementation of small tests. However, we have to challenge the technological problems and the vagueness of students’ attitudes during class.

This study examines Japanese high school students’ logical development of ideas (LDI) through writing activities using various types of concept maps (CM). The result suggests 1) the most effective CM is a type including the task to reconstruct the ideas, 2) cognitive processing with reconstruction and repeat training contribute to improve LDI, and 3) the students’ awareness of the LDI improves.

本研究では,シャドーイングに明示的な音変化指導を取り入れた指導が,従来型のシャドーイングと比較してどちらが大学生のリスニング力とリスニング自己効力感を向上させ,コスト感を下げるのかを検証した。二群に分けた大学生に二ヶ月半,それぞれの指導を行った。その結果,リスニング力とコスト感においては統計的に有意な差はなかったが,自己効力感においては明示的な音変化指導を取り入れた群の方が統計的に有意な差が確認された。

This paper proposes the use of reproduction, a basic translation training tool, as an instruction method for second language teaching. This method draws on findings from interpreting process research: constraints of working memory capacity and the role of non-linguistic (conceptual) representations during interpreting. The points of the method are summarized as segmentation, tagging, and working memory.

This study is an initiative that aims to help elementary school students notice the prosodic difference between Japanese and English as well as vowels and consonants. The results of the experiment proved that pronunciation of the students who took the instruction devised improved significantly in intelligibility for native English speakers.

This paper explores the issues of improvisation, collaboration, and creativity in EFL communication; more specifically, the effects of the “Yes, and” structure on the participants’ productions and interactions. It employs category classification of segments and wholistic communication analysis to identify some characteristics of presentational and interactional modes of spoken communication.
