Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in December 1991, the Republic of Belarus gained its independence. Since then Japanese literature scholars and linguists have been showing a growing interest towards the new country’s language and culture. Namely, direct translation of literature written in Belarusian into Japanese (instead of translating from Russian) and introduction of Belarusian language education into universities is taking place. This study analyzes the recent situation related to Belarusian literature and language in Japan.

The members of the JACTFL (Japan Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) executive board, President Mr. YAMAZAKI Y., Prof. USUYAMA T. and Mr. MOGI T. paid a visit to the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education on November 28, 2019 in order to appeal directly to the key person on decision-making process in the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG). We made a request to keep supporting the multi-lingual education and the international exchange programs and to continue their financial funding after the Olympic Paralympic Games. Mr. UDA Takeshi, Special Advisor on Education of Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education of TMG, mentioned the importance of the multi-lingual education policy in school education (focused on English education) long before and articulated his intention to continue supporting it after Tokyo 2020 Games.

Persian is one of the Indo-Iranian languages of the Indo-European language family and is spoken in Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and some other surrounding countries. Termed as 'French in the Middle East' in European countries, it had traditionally been the lingua franca or the literary language in the so-called 'Greater Persia' or 'Persianate World' containing West and Central Asian lands, and it has been renowned for its long history of literature during the Turko-Mongolian dynasties. The purpose of this paper is 1) to provide the overview of the tradition of Persian literature by introducing major translation works into Japanese, and 2) to show the current state of the Persian studies and Persian language education in Japan.

In February 2009, UNESCO identified approximately 2500 languages as being endangered of becoming extinct. Among them eight languages of Japan were listed: Ainu language of Hokkaido, Hachijou language of Hajijyou-jima island, Ryukyuan languages of Amami, Kunigami, Okinawan, Miyako, Yaeyama, and Yonaguni. Including the Japanese language, which is not facing an extinction, there are nine languages altogether. Whereas Okinawan and Ainu languages are generally known as languages, the remaining six languages are not. The reason behind the fact that most people are not familiar with them is that, with the exception of the Ainu language, they have been addressed as ‘dialects’. This way of addressing our languages is hurting our pride as Okinawans and is becoming a factor causing discrimination.

Esperanto is a language that enables us to easily communicate with people with different linguistic backgrounds, and provides students with opportunities to open their mind to diverse people and cultures. In addition, it is proven to help students learn other new languages with ease. In spite of these advantages, however, Esperanto is not a language commonly taught in Japanese schools. This paper, based on the author’s personal experiences of teaching Esperanto at schools and in communities for a number of years, discusses the significance and potential of teaching Esperanto as a second language in Japanese schools.
