O’Hanlon et al. gave a full rage data on motion sickness for single frequency sinusoidal vertical motions. When it is used for ship motion, there are some problems because ship motion distributes in wide frequency range. In this paper, motion sickness in two frequency vertical motions and ship motions distributed in wide frequency rage are studied. And it is shown that vertical acceleration components in higher frequency range may have bigger effects on motion sickness than estimated from O’Hanlon’s data

The authors have developed a new stem named "SEA-Arrow" to improve the propulsive performance of medium-speed ships such as LPG carriers. Having no protrusion of the bulbous bow, the SEA-Arrow can reduce bow waves and thereby greatly increase the propulsive performance. LPG carriers are required to have box-shape tanks arranged to the fore part of the hull because of necessity for efficient arrangement of LPG tanks, as well as develop a higher ship speed than oil tankers and bulk carriers. And LPG carriers are restricted in their lengths due to limitation in the facilities of their loading/unloading ports. Under these restrictions, the authors have carried out R&D of LPG carriers' hull form, aiming at improving the propulsive performance by minimizing the bow waves. By adopting the SEA-Arrow, the authors could reduce the wave resistance to a half and achieve a 6-10% reduction in the required main engine horsepower. This paper describes the features of the SEA-Arrow and its performance based on the model test results.

Numerical simulation of maneuvering of "Naniwa-maru" was performed to clarify the maneuver characteristics in particular with wearing operation. "Naniwa-maru" belongs to a type called Higaki-kaisen, and the Higaki- kaisen is a type of the more generic class of vessels named "Bezai-ship." Bezai-ship are typical Japanese sailing traders in the 18th to the mid-19th century which have different appearance and construction from those of Western tall ships. The present paper shows the numerical simulation of her wearing operation, and the results compared with the measured data. The equations of motion dealt with coupled ship motions of surge, sway, roll and yaw with co-ordinate system using horizontal body axes. The numerical simulation indicates ship response according to the measured time history of rudder angle, and shows the ship trajectory and the sailing state parameters such as heading angle, leeway angle, heel angle and velocity. The calculated results indicated the ship performance very well.

An experimental investigation on the transverse porpoising instability of a planning craft in drifting motion at high advance speeds in calm water is carried out. Some types of transverse porpoising are observed in measuring motions in oblique towing tests under heave, pitch and roll free condition. In order to clarify the influence of hydrodynamic forces on the transverse porpoising, captive model tests in oblique towing condition are carried out. The experiments are carried out by systematically changing trim angle, drift angle, towing speed and draft. From the measured hydrodynamic forces, the restoring forces and moments of heave, roll and pitch are calculated. The results show that the coupling restoring coefficients between heave and pitch have the different sign each other(∂F_z/∂θ>0, ∂M_y/∂z<0)and the coupling restoring coefficients between heave and roll also have the different sign each other (∂F_z/∂ψ>0, ∂M_x/∂z<0)at large drift angle. The results suggest that the transverse porpoising considering in the present paper may be a self-excited phenomena in a coupling motion among roll, pitch and heave.

In the design process of a passenger ship, ship owners try to improve the seakeeping quality of a ship by changing ship hull shape and size, or by installing additional anti-motion apparatuses, like a fin stabilizer, an anti-rolling tank, a ride control system or an anti-pitching fin. Such improvements usually coat the ship owners. They consider the merit and the demerit of each choice carefully, and then decide which way is the best one from the point of view of operation and economics. In this paper, an evaluation method of seakeeping quality from the economical point of view is proposed. The method is divided into three parts ; prediction of ship motions in waves, prediction of vomiting ratio of MSI(Motion Sickness Incidence)of passengers on the ship, and prediction of increases of share of demand for the ship due to improvement of the vomiting ratio. The evaluation method is applied to two domestic routes in Japan.

In the present study, a new prediction method of travel demand of cruise ships is proposed in which the characteristic of each demand for choosing a tour, the characteristics of tours, and factors of expense, time, seasickness, and popularity are taken into account. In the method, firstly, potential share of each tour, which is hot spring, cruising, theme park, and traveling abroad, is determined based on age and gender by using the characteristic of each demand for choosing a tour and the characteristics of tours. The characteristic of each demand for choosing a tour is analyzed by determining weights of nine elements, which are communication, relaxing, resting, nature, feeling of free, knowledge, curiosity, luxuriant and thrilling, based on taste and behavior of each demand by using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) model from survey data of general people who want to travel. The characteristics of the tours are analyzed by determining their weights for the nine elements by using AHP model from survey data of professional people who properly understand about all the tours. Then, using the predicted potential share for cruising, the number of demand of cruising is determined by using distributions of travel demand for traveling expenses and days, and factors of seasickness and popularity. Using the predicted number of demand, an economical analysis is carried out to determine the optimum fleets based on economic margin ratio and business impact. This method is applied to the Japanese cruise market and the results are discussed.

"SEA-Arrow", developed by Kawasaki Shipbuilding Corporation, is an advanced new bow form for medium-speed ships such as LPG carriers. The bow end form of SEA-Arrow around the loaded draught is much sharper than that of conventional hull ships. With SEA-Arrow, bow waves are greatly reduced in loaded condition compared with conventional hull ships. Model tank test results show that SEA-Arrow can reduce the wave resistance to a half and the required main engine horsepower by 6-10%. On the other hand, the superiority of SEA-Arrow ships' propulsive performance in loaded condition cannot be verified in sea trial because actual ships' speed tests in sea trials are generally carried out in ballast condition except oil tankers. Therefore, the authors have analyzed, to confirm the high propulsive performance of SEA-Arrow ships, the voyage data of three SEA-Arrow ships and one conventional hull ship, which are sister ships of 59,200m3 LPG carriers. The results show that the propulsive performance of the SEA-Arrow ships is superior to that of the conventional hull ship and that its analyzed speed advantage agrees with the estimate from the model tank test results.

A prediction and analysis system for the performance of a ship in real seas is proposed and constructed, with EUT (Enhanced Unified Theory) adopted as the main calculation method. The proposed system can compute the frequency-domain response functions of the wave-induced ship motions, the distribution of the pressure and global wave loads, the relative wave height, and etc. In addition, the added resistance, wave-induced steady lateral force and yaw moment can be predicted, including effects of the bow wave diffraction, the forward speed and 3-D interactions in a rational manner. By using these results and a wave spectrum representing real irregular seas, the short-term prediction of linear responses, the averaged added resistance, and the resultant speed loss of a ship in irregular waves can be calculated with the present system. Good performance of the system is demonstrated with some comparisons to experimental results and some applications to the speed correction in the speed trial and the prediction of the speed loss in actual voyages.
