The completion of the M. S. Tatsuta Maru, the sister ship of the Asama Maru and the biggest motor liner of almost wholly a Japanese production, is an important event for Japanese Shipping and Shipbuilding. On this remarkable occasion, it does not appear to be wholly nonsense to make some reference about these ships.In this paper, a short review is made about the vast designs and long efforts to arrive at the final elaborate design of the Pacific Liners.Some results are also picked up from those of the exhaustive trials, and finally, an attempt is made to lay out 2, 000 B. H. P. geared Diesel installation for a high speed Trans Pacific Liner which might come into question in future.

This paper describes numerical simulations and experimental results of dynamic response of a cylindrical floating structure subjected to an underwater explosion. An explosion was generated by wire explosion method under the center of bottom plate. Responses of the cylinder were recorded in the experiments with three different offset conditions. Nonlinear explicit finite element method and finite volume method were used for the structural analysis and the fluid analysis respectively. Compressibility of fluid and fluid structure interaction were taken into account in the numerical simulation. Explosion bubble shape was observed with a high speed camera and were compared with the numerical simulation results. Experimental results of time histories of bottom surface pressures and displacement of the bottom plate were also compared with the numerical simulation results. Numerical simulation results regarding to dynamic response of the cylinder corresponded well with experimental results. Discussions are given to boundary effects on behavior of explosion bubble and offset distance effects on response of the cylinder.

O’Hanlon et al. gave a full rage data on motion sickness for single frequency sinusoidal vertical motions. When it is used for ship motion, there are some problems because ship motion distributes in wide frequency range. In this paper, motion sickness in two frequency vertical motions and ship motions distributed in wide frequency rage are studied. And it is shown that vertical acceleration components in higher frequency range may have bigger effects on motion sickness than estimated from O’Hanlon’s data

The vessels with waterjet propulsion system increase with the rapid growth in numbers of high speed vessels. It has been increasing when waterjet vessels do towing work. However, the towing performance of waterjet vessels has not been researched clearly.The purpose of this study is to investigate the towing performance of waterjet vessels. Bollard pull test and 2 ways towing tests which are towing ahead and astern were carried out by using the patrol vessels with waterjet of Japan Coast Guard. In general, a standard tow force of propeller vessels is 1.0tf/100PS. However, it was found from the test results that tow force of waterjet vessels is almost half of propeller's one. The cause of drop of towing performance for waterjet is the flow separations at the inlet's lip part.Since the numbers of impeller rotations becomes high to the low ship speed during bollard pull and towing, and the inlet velocity ratio (IVR) which means the inlet velocity to the momentum velocity becomes 1.0 or more. Duct flow of flash type inlet on bollard pull and towing were computed by flow solver "SURF"developed by National Maritime Research Institute. On the basis of those computed results, the loss due to the waterjet duct and the head of propeller and waterjet were evaluated and were compared with the towing test data. Comparison of computed results with test data shows good agreement. The results indicate that towing performance of waterjet can be estimated by evaluating the loss due to the waterjet duct.

An experimental investigation is carried out to study the effects of leading edge fillet and transverse inclination of a strut on a junction flow around and in the wake of the NACA 16-018 aerofoil strut mounted on a flat plate at zero, 5° and 10° angles of attack. The milk injection method is used to visualize the junction flow around and in the wake of the strut on the flat plate at the experiment. The effects of the leading edge fillet and transverse inclination of 30° and 60° of the strut from normal to the flat plate on the junction flow are investigated, furthermore velocity measurements at the leading and trailing edges of the strut normal to the flat plate are carried out to confirm the effect of the leading edge fillet at zero angle of attack.

The authors have developed a new stem named "SEA-Arrow" to improve the propulsive performance of medium-speed ships such as LPG carriers. Having no protrusion of the bulbous bow, the SEA-Arrow can reduce bow waves and thereby greatly increase the propulsive performance. LPG carriers are required to have box-shape tanks arranged to the fore part of the hull because of necessity for efficient arrangement of LPG tanks, as well as develop a higher ship speed than oil tankers and bulk carriers. And LPG carriers are restricted in their lengths due to limitation in the facilities of their loading/unloading ports. Under these restrictions, the authors have carried out R&D of LPG carriers' hull form, aiming at improving the propulsive performance by minimizing the bow waves. By adopting the SEA-Arrow, the authors could reduce the wave resistance to a half and achieve a 6-10% reduction in the required main engine horsepower. This paper describes the features of the SEA-Arrow and its performance based on the model test results.

The author has long been researching the method of planning and controlling the ship construction work and in this papar he describes his idea. He analyses the whole work into such subdivisions as it may be suitable for the purpose of control, and has the shipbuilding work load or capacity shown in terms of production quantities, discarding old idea of denoting such by man-hours. Further the relation between production quantities and man-hours is studied in a form, in which the effect of ever advancing various technical improvement will be easily grasped, so that the real capacity and efficiency currently in existence and those in future will be estimated. The author has also made clear that in the adoption of his method, it is an essential prerequisite to establish boundary conditions in the shipyard such as standardization of material, material control, design control, establishment of work extent, complete control of shops, etc.

An experimental investigation on the transverse porpoising instability of a planning craft in drifting motion at high advance speeds in calm water is carried out. Some types of transverse porpoising are observed in measuring motions in oblique towing tests under heave, pitch and roll free condition. In order to clarify the influence of hydrodynamic forces on the transverse porpoising, captive model tests in oblique towing condition are carried out. The experiments are carried out by systematically changing trim angle, drift angle, towing speed and draft. From the measured hydrodynamic forces, the restoring forces and moments of heave, roll and pitch are calculated. The results show that the coupling restoring coefficients between heave and pitch have the different sign each other(∂F_z/∂θ>0, ∂M_y/∂z<0)and the coupling restoring coefficients between heave and roll also have the different sign each other (∂F_z/∂ψ>0, ∂M_x/∂z<0)at large drift angle. The results suggest that the transverse porpoising considering in the present paper may be a self-excited phenomena in a coupling motion among roll, pitch and heave.

The authors discuss aesthetic and geometric considerations for the ship design. When reading histories of ships, it is easy to confirm that they have many elegant characteristics in shapes. However, papers discussed the aesthetics of ships are rarely to be seen in bibliographies of the naval architecture. This does not mean the naval architecture don't have the philosophy "a sense of the aesthetics". In fact aesthetic characteritics of new ship are always pointed out when introducing the design profile, and thorefore the authors guess that the design process involves a sense of the aesthetics. In order to prove their guess to be right, practical processes in relation to the aesthetics are extraced from the ship design procedure, and so the meaning of the aesthetics in the procedure is made to be clear by using the Golden Section and the Dynamic Symmetry. Finally, it is geometically examined whether the Dynamic Symmetry is applied to the planning of the profile (type) of ship.

The objective of the present study is to elucidate the ow mechanism of delaying stall by use of wavy leading edges. Experiments were carried out to examine the effects of variant wavy leading edges attached on NACA0018 section wing of aspect ratio 1.6. The Reynolds number based on the chord length is Rec = 1:38 × 105 for the experiments. For these tests, lift, drag, and moment of wings with and without wavy leading edges were measured in a circular water channel. Flow visualization on the surface of wings was also conducted in order to clarify the e ects of the wavy leading edges on the delaying stall. It is found that the wavy leading edges can control ow separation and delay stall, which in turn is good for producing large lift force at poststall angles of attack. Under the same height condition, the short width of wavy protuberance shows good performance of the wings compared with that of the long width. The wavy protuberance located near the wing tip does not enhance hydrodynamic performance.
