Recently, we found two species of Crassula newly introduced into central Japan. Based on their morphology, we identified them as Crassula peduncularis and C. saginoides, native to the New World. They closely resemble C. aquatica, which is indigenous to Japan. Here, we describe the morphological distinctions among the three species in detail. In addition, we examined genetic differences among the three species based on sequence variations in the nuclear ribosomal ITS region and three chloroplast intergenic regions. Although C. saginoides was considered to be an inland form of C. aquatica and had been treated as a synonym of C. aquatica, the degree of genetic differentiation was relatively large, suggesting that these two taxa should be considered to be independent species.

Several new populations of the mycoheterotrophic orchid Kalimantanorchis nagamasui from Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia, are reported. The species was previously considered endemic to West Kalimantan, Borneo, Indonesia. Given that the continued discovery of new species and distributional records of mycoheterotrophic plants have been made from only a limited number of surveys in a small selection of sites, it is likely that further surveys in Borneo will reveal additional occurrences. The description of the morphology, in particular on the underground parts and size variation, of K. nagamasui is also updated.

Hybridization is a common phenomenon in many plant genera, and among them is the world's largest aquatic genus, Potamogeton (Potamogetonaceae) with about 69 species and 50 hybrids reported. Here we provide genetic insights into Potamogeton hybrids from China, where ten or more putative hybrids exist, of which eight have been genetically confirmed. In the study presented here, we verified the hybrid status and inferred the origins of three Potamogeton hybrids using molecular phylogenetic analyses of plastid (chloroplast) trnT-trnF and nuclear ITS sequence data sets that include previously published and newly generated data. The hybrids identified were: 1) P. ×inbaensis, a known hybrid from Japan; 2) a hybrid between P. perfoliatus s.l. and P. wrightii, and 3) a hybrid between tetraploid maternal P. distinctus and diploid paternal P. octandrus. Potamogeton ×inbaensis is reported from China for the first time, whereas the latter two hybrids are new to science.

A new variety, Aristolochia kaempferi Willd. var. laevipes Watan.-Toma & Ohi-Toma (Aristolochiaceae), is described. The variety is distinguished from var. kaempferi by having glabrous pedicels. This new variety is disjunctly distributed in the Ise-Shima region of the Kii Peninsula and the northeastern part of the Owari region of central Honshu, Japan. Moreover, we newly confirmed the presence of A. kaempferi var. kaempferi in the central part of the Kii Peninsula and the Owari region based on flowering individuals in natural populations and in cultivation. Aristolochia kaempferi var. kaempferi and A. tanzawana were in proximity with A. kaempferi var. laevipes in the Owari region.

Invasive alien species are serious threats to the biota of the Ogasawara Islands, and Morus australis is one of them. To clarify the invasion routes and the genetic composition of the founding populations, plant samples were collected from 32 populations of M. australis from Japan, including 12 from the Ogas- awara Islands, for population genetic analyses using 14 microsatellite markers. The UPGMA dendro- gram based on Nei’s genetic distance, Principal Coordinate Analysis based on pairwise F ST values, and Bayesian Clustering using STRUCTURE software indicated that the populations of M. australis in the Ogasawara Islands are genetically similar to those in the Ryukyu Islands, but clearly differentiated from those in the Izu Islands and mainland of Japan. The level of genetic diversity in the Ogasawara Islands (A R = 4.24; H E = 0.60) was similar to that in the Ryukyu Islands (A R = 4.70; H E = 0.66). The findings from this study strongly suggested that M. australis plants now in the Ogasawara Islands are descendants of those introduced from the Ryukyu Islands; the numbers of transplanted individuals from the Ryukyu Islands were large. Such high genetic diversity may have enhanced the invasiveness of M. australis in the Ogasawara Islands.

The discovery of Spiranthes hongkongensis S. Y. Hu & Barretto (Orchidaceae) on Ishigaki Island, Japan, during herbarium studies in KPM is reported. Previously, S. hongkongensis was reported only from China (Guangdong, Hong Kong, Taiwan), and Malaysia (Borneo). Spiranthes hongkongensis is morphologically similar to S. australis, but is distinguishable by the membranous, narrow, truncate rostellum attached to the middle of the pollinia without a viscidium, shorter column and distinctly 3-lobed stigma.

Carex planata has been treated as comprising three varieties: var. planata, var. angustealata, and var. remotiuscula. To evaluate this treatment, characteristics of the inflorescences, spikes, utricles, and achenes of both herbarium specimens and growing plants in the field were examined. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed two distinct groups within C. planata, one of which was identical to var. angustealata and the other to var. planata; var. remotiuscula could not be distinguished from var. planata. Variety remotiuscula was confirmed to be a synonym of var. planata. Variety angustealata of western Japan grows in flood plains along rivers. The results from PCA and information from distribution and habitat led to the conclusion that var. angustealata should be treated as a distinct species: C. angustealata, characterized by ascendant utricles and a greater number of spikes (≥ 9) on well-grown plants. Smaller achenes in proportion to the utricles also distinguish C. angustealata from C. planata. Detailed descriptions of both C. angustealata and C. planata based on the numerical survey are presented. Lectotypes of var. angustealata Akiyama and var. remotiuscula Akiyama are designated.

Haplopteris mediosora (Hayata) X. C. Zhang (Pteridaceae), a fern with linear simple fronds is widely distributed at high elevations from the Himalayas through China, the Philippines and Taiwan to Japan. In Japan, sporophytes of H. mediosora were recorded only from Azusa-shiraiwa, a mountain of Okuchichibu region, and have not been seen for over 50 years. The hypothesis that such rare species still persist as gametophytes was proven during this study when gametophytes were found on several mountains in the Oku-chichibu region. Phylogenetic analysis of rbcL sequences collected in this study demonstrated that the gametophytes, identified as H. mediosora, and sporophytes of H. mediosora formed a clade and were distinct from related species of Haplopteris. The gametophytes were also growing independently because of the absence of sporophytes. A comparison of the haplotypes of the matK and trnL-F regions showed that the gametophytes had two chloroplast DNA haplotypes. The polymorphisms may have been derived from ancestral sporophytes that were present in Japan during the glacial period. Despite the rarity of sporophytes in the area, the independent gametophytes occur in four distant localities in the Oku-chichibu mountains.

Clerodendrum trichotomum s. lat., under which many infraspecific taxa have been recognized, includes both tetraploid and diploid individuals, although chromosome numbers and geographic variation in ploidy levels have not been investigated in the Japanese archipelago. The geographic distribution of ploidy levels and chloroplast haplotypes of four Japanese taxa of C. trichotomum s. lat., based on chromosome counts, flow cytometry, and genotyping of five microsatellite loci is reported. It was determined that Japanese C. trichotomum var. trichotomum and var. yakusimense are tetraploid (2n = 104), while var. esculentum and C. izuinsulare are diploid (2n = 52). The diploid taxa are distributed only on the southern edge of the Japanese archipelago, while tetraploid C. trichotomum is distributed widely. Such distribution patterns may be formed by temperate forest shrinkage during, and tetraploid expansion after, glacial periods. Thirteen haplotypes were detected, and were divided into the following three clades: (1) Japanese C. trichotomum var. trichotomum and C. izuinsulare, (2) C. trichotomum var. yakusimense and var. esculentum, and (3) Chinese C. trichotomum. Two haplotypes were shared between diploid and tetraploid lineages, suggesting multiple polyploidization events in C. trichotomum s. lat.. Inconsistency between nuclear and chloroplast phylogenetic trees suggests a past inter-lineage hybridization event in C. trichotomum s. lat.

Acystopteris taiwaniana, formerly known only from Taiwan, is newly recorded in Japan (northern and central Honshu and Shikoku). Chromosome counts and DNA sequences (plastid rbcL and nuclear PgiC) suggested that it is an allotetraploid species originating from hybridization between diploid A. japonica and an unknown diploid species. Acystopteris taiwaniana differs from A. japonica in having glandular hairs on the indusia of the sori, paler stipes and rachises, wider angles of divergence of pinnae from the rachis and larger spores, although there overlaps in the variation. Triploid sterile hybrids between the two species occur occasionally at the periphery of populations of one of the parental species in Japan.

Salvia lutescens (Koidz.) Koidz. var. intermedia (Makino) Murata (Lamiaceae) has been proved to be divided into two allopatric taxa, one in the Kinki Distr. ("Kinki form") and the other in the Kanto Distr. ("Kanto form") according to the recent molecular phylogenetic and morphological analyses. In this sense, the past lectotypification of var. intermedia by Murata & Yamazaki (1993) was incorrectly applied, as the lectotype (N. Takemura s.n., MAK), belonging to the Kinki form, is in serious conflict with the protologue of Makino (1901) which agrees well with the Kanto form. Therefore, I revise the lectotypification of var. intermedia in accordance with ICN Art. 9.19(b) to change into a specimen of the Kanto form (R. Yatabe & J. Matsumura s.n., TI), and describe the Kinki form as a new variety, var. occidentalis. Furthermore, lectotype of S. lutescens var. crenata is also designated. A key to the varieties and taxonomic treatment of each taxon of S. lutescens is provided.

A new peloric form of Cephalanthera erecta (Thunb.) Blume (Orchidaceae) is reported from Hokkaido, Honshu, and Shikoku, Japan. Cephalanthera erecta f. pelorica Hiros. Hayak. & Suetsugu has an inconspicuous lip and stigmas positioned at the apex of the column. The flowers of C. erecta f. pelorica resemble those of the probable peloric form of C. erecta (i.e., C. erecta var. oblanceolata N. Pearce & P. J. Cribb, C. nanlingensis A. Q. Hu & F. W. Xing) and C. longifolia (L.) Fritsch. f. conformis Suetsugu & Hiros. Hayak. However, C. erecta f. pelorica can be distinguished from C. erecta var. oblanceolata, which has a swollen organ on the abaxial surface of the column apex (vs. no swollen organ); C. nanlingensis, which has two staminodes (vs. five staminodes), and C. longifolia f. conformis, which has elliptic, coriaceous leaves (vs. lanceolate, papyraceous leaves).

Ludwigia grandiflora (Michx.) Greuter & Burdet is an invasive aquatic plant native to an area ranging from the southeastern United States to South America. In previous reports, L. grandiflora in Lake Biwa has been identified as L. grandiflora subsp. grandiflora, a hexaploid subspecies (2n = 48) or L. grandiflora sensu lato. Species of Ludwigia sect. Jussiaea, are morphologically very similar. Morphological characters, especially floral characters and cytology (chromosome number) have been used to identify species and subspecies. In our study, the morphological characteristics of L. grandiflora in Lake Biwa substantially corresponded to those of L. grandiflora subsp. hexapetala (Hook. & Arn.) G. L. Nesom & Kartesz, a decaploid (2n = 80) subspecies. The chromosome number of L. grandiflora in Lake Biwa was 2n = ca. 80, the same as in L. grandiflora subsp. hexapetala (2n = 80). Importantly, L. grandiflora in Lake Biwa is not L. grandiflora subsp. grandiflora, but rather L. grandiflora subsp. hexapetala. This re-identification has implications for management in Lake Biwa, since the life history of L. grandiflora subsp. hexapetala has been studied in Europe.

DNA analysis and morphological observation were conducted for a putative Potamogeton hybrid endemic to the Fuji Five Lakes and Lake Ashi and Potamogeton × leptocephalus from Lake Biwa, Japan. Both proved to be hybrids between P. maackianus and P. perfoliatus. However, the hybrid from the Fuji Five Lakes and Lake Ashi was distinct from P. × leptocephalus in certain morphological characteristics. It is described as a new variety P. × leptocephalus var. fujiensis.
