The purpose of this study is to investigate the combined effect of two-liquid silane-phosphate primer and single-liquid sodium sulfite primer on bonding between self-polymerizing resins and feldspathic ceramics, and to promote the polymerization behavior of self-polymerizing resins at the bonding interface. The silane-phosphate primer (Super-Bond PZ Primer; PZ) and the sodium sulfite primer (Teeth Primer; TP) were used as the surface treatment agents for bonding the feldspathic ceramics and the self-polymerizing resins (MMA-TBB resin and 4-META/MMA-TBB resin). Combined PZ and TP showed high shear bond strengths. The peak of the differential scanning calorimetry curve was shown to occur early through the addition of TP. These results indicated that additional TP promoted the conversion in the initial polymerization of resin, and the firmly bond was obtained at the interface. PZ+TP treatment can be regarded as an effective treatment for a temporary splint used in teeth restoration.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity of contemporary flowable and paste-like bulk-fill dental composites by using a real-time cell analysis. In the present paper, cytotoxicity levels of five flowable, five paste-like bulk-fill composite materials and one conventional flowable, one conventional paste-like resin composite were examined on L929 mouse fibroblast cell line. After seeding 25,000 cells/300 μL/well cell suspensions into the wells of an E-plate, test materials were added and observed at every 30 min intervals for 72 h. Kruskal Wallis H and Mann Whitney U multiple comparison tests were used to analyze the results. Pre-reacted glass-ionomer (PRG) containing bulk-fill composites were severely toxic at all time points (24, 48 and 72 h, p<0.05). None of the tested composites demonstrated high cell viability (>70%) at 48 and 72 h. Flowable and paste-like composites of the same brand exhibited similar cytotoxic properties (p>0.05).

The experimental bioactive sealers were synthesized by incorporating fluoridated-nano-bioactive glass (F-nBG; 2.5 and 5wt%) in AH Plus® (Dentsply DeTrey, Konstanz, Germany) sealer and denoted as AH-FBG2.5 and AH-FBG5, respectively. Structural pattern, setting time, flowability, and water sorption analysis were performed. The fluoride release behavior was evaluated periodically over the course of 40 days using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. For sealing ability, post-extraction single-rooted teeth were obturated with sealers. The percentage of voids and sealing ability were evaluated periodically using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) followed by push-out bond strength. The Fourier transform infrared spectra showed a change in peak height with an increase in the concentration of fillers. The setting time, flowability, and water sorption of experimental groups were within the acceptable clinical range. The fluoride release, sealing ability, and bond strength of experimental sealers were significantly high. The experimental sealers have potential to overcome sealing ability issues of sealers.

Application of hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanoparticles to repair damaged enamel has attracted recent attention. In this study, HAp nanoparticles with various morphologies (spherical, short-rod, long-rod and fiber morphologies) were synthesized via chemical precipitation methods without the addition of template molecules, and the adsorption/desorption behaviors of a cationic antibacterial agent, cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), on the HAp nanoparticles were evaluated. The adsorption of CPC on each HAp nanoparticle showed Langmuir-type adsorption, and the short-rod/long-rod HAp nanoparticles showed thermodynamically more stable adsorption of CPC than that with the spherical/fiber HAp nanoparticles. The desorption rate of CPC from the short-rod/long-rod HAp nanoparticles was slower than that of the spherical/fiber HAp nanoparticles. The HAp nanoparticles with different CPC release profiles presented here have potential applications as nanoparticulate enamel repair agents with antibacterial properties.

This study aimed to determine the role of the 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) in dentin bond durability of universal adhesive in etch-&-rinse mode through bond strength tests after different degradation conditions. This study used the MDP-containing universal adhesive, Clearfil Universal Bond Quick (CU), and an experimental adhesive (NM) made with the same ingredients as CU, excluding MDP. Shear bond strength (SBS) to dentin were obtained in etch-&-rinse mode with or without MDP. CU in self-etch mode was used as a comparison. The groups were divided into three types: 1) subjected to thermal cycling; 2) subjected to long-term water storage; and 3) stored in water for 24 h, as a baseline. The discrepancies in the mean SBS of the CU and NM groups become prominent with prolonged degradation periods. This study indicates that the MDP in universal adhesive might play a key role in enhancing dentin bond quality even when etch-&-rinse mode is used.

Chemical transitions after atmospheric pressure plasma irradiation were investigated by evaluating intermolecular attractions and atomic and molecular reactions. Gold, titanium and stainless-steel alloy samples were ground with #800 grit SiC waterproof paper and nitrogen gas atmospheric plasma irradiation was conducted. The surface free energies of the treated alloys were calculated and compared statistically. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis was performed.The surface free energies of all metal surfaces treated by plasma irradiation were 1.5-times higher than those of the untreated metals. The energy of the hydrogen bonding component increased, and all alloy surfaces were coated with metal oxide after only a short period of plasma irradiation. The surfaces oxidized by plasma exhibited a high active energy, mainly due to an increase in the hydrogen bonding component. Reactions with oxygen in the air were promoted on the clean surfaces with exposed reactive elements.

We investigated the influence of different curing modes on the mechanical properties and wear behavior of dual-cure provisional resin-based composites (DCPRs). Three DCPRs and a self-curing bis-acryl provisional resin-based composite were used. Flexural strength (σF), elastic modulus (E), resilience (R), and fracture toughness (KIC) were measured. The specimens were fabricated with and without light irradiation, stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 h, and subjected to 5,000 or 10,000 thermal cycles. For sliding impact wear testing, 12 specimens were prepared with and without light irradiation. The maximum facet depth and volume loss were determined using a noncontact profilometer. Some of the mechanical properties and wear behavior of DCPRs are affected by light irradiation. This study indicated that proper light irradiation is important in polymerization process of the DCPRs to enhance the wear resistance and some mechanical properties.

The development of effective methods to disinfect biofilms on dental materials is medically important. This study evaluated the bactericidal effects of peroxynitric acid (HOONO2; PNA) on biofilms formed on titanium surfaces. Streptococcus gordonii was cultured on either machined or rough titanium discs that were then used to evaluate the bactericidal effects of seven reagents, i.e., normal saline, benzalkonium chloride disinfectant solution, chlorhexidine digluconate solution, three concentration types of PNA, and inactivated PNA. Using low concentration of PNA, the bacterial count based on a CFU assay reached an undetectable level within 10 s; this bactericidal effect was the strongest observed for the seven tested reagents. Thus, PNA may be more useful than other disinfectants for sterilizing biofilms on titanium surfaces that have been contaminated with bacteria.

This study evaluated shear bond strengths of two gingiva-colored layering resin composites to zirconia frameworks coated with feldspathic porcelain. Airborne-particle abraded porcelain-coated zirconia disks were treated with one of the following primers: Clearfil Photo Bond, Clearfil Photo Bond with Clearfil Porcelain Bond Activator (CPB+Activator), Estenia Opaque Primer, Porcelain Liner M Liquid B (PLB), or no primer. A light-polymerizing (CER) or a photo/heat-polymerizing gingiva-colored indirect resin composite (EST) was bonded to the porcelain-coated zirconia disks in each group (n=11). Shear bond strength was measured. For both CER and EST specimens, bond strengths in CPB+Act group were significantly higher than those in the other groups. In all priming groups, bond strength was significantly higher for EST specimens than for CER specimens. Combined application of a phosphate monomer and silane enhanced initial bond strength of light-polymerized and photo/heat-polymerized gingiva-colored layering resin composites to porcelain-coated zirconia ceramics.

The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effect of etching with potassium hydrogen difluoride (KHF2) and ammonium hydrogen difluoride (NH4HF2) on the bond strength of a self-polymerizing methyl methacrylate resin (MMA-TBB) bonded to zirconia. Zirconia disks were prepared using the following surface treatment: no treatment, alumina blasting, and etching with KHF2 or NH4HF2. The specimens were bonded with the MMA-TBB. The shear bond (Ø=5 mm) strength was measured. The surface free energies of the specimens were determined by measuring contact angles. The KHF2 and NH4HF2 groups exhibited higher shear bond strength and surface free energy than did the alumina blasting and no treatment groups. Compared with alumina blasting, etching with KHF2 and NH4HF2 exhibited superior bonding ability of mechanical retention to zirconia.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the viscoelastic properties of novel low-shrinking composites and compare them to those of packable composites. Six materials were tested: Clearfil Majesty Posterior (CM), ELS Extra Low Shrinkage (EL), Filtek P60 (FP), Filtek Silorane (FS), Prodigy (PR) and Surefil (SU). Static and dynamic testing was performed and materials were tested dry and wet at different temperatures (21&deg;C to 50&deg;C). Shear and flexural modulus, loss tangent, dynamic viscosity, Poisson&rsquo;s ratio and creep recovery were calculated among others. Significant differences were found both between the two groups and between materials belonging to the same group. CM presented the highest shear and flexural modulus and EL the lowest. All materials were softened by an increase of temperature, while FS was the least affected by water and PR showed to be the most susceptible. Different approaches used to overcome polymerization shrinkage lead to materials with different properties.

The aim of this <i>in vitro</i> study was to investigate if surface microhardness of Fuji IX GP, Vitremer, Dyract AP, and Prodigy is influenced by conditioning in aqueous solutions of lactic, orthophosphoric, citric, and acetic acids against bidistilled water (which was used as control). The pH values of acids used in this study were representative of dietary acids. All specimens were stored in bidistilled water for one week and then conditioned in the respective test solutions for another week. Citric (p<0.05) and acetic acids reduced, while lactic and orthophosphoric acids (p<0.05) increased the microhardness of both Fuji IX GP and Vitremer. On the other hand, microhardness of both Dyract AP and Prodigy was significantly reduced by all acidic media (p<0.05). The observed differences in the surface microhardness of various tooth-colored restorative materials conditioned in several media varied not only with the pH but also the nature of the acidic solution, and with the composition of the evaluated material.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of thermal cycling on microleakage of a fissure sealant after it was bonded with different bonding agents and polymerized with different light curing units. To this end, two bonding agents (Xeno III, iBond), three light curing units (Astralis 3, Elipar free-light, Elipar free-light 2), and a fissure sealant (Fissurit FX) were used. Microleakage was then evaluated using a dye penetration method after thermal cycling. When the fissure sealant was polymerized with Elipar free-light and Elipar free-light 2, microleakage at 10,000 cycles was significantly increased compared with that at 5,000 cycles. In terms of comparison among the curing units, the best microleakage score was observed with Astralis 3 (p<0.05). In terms of comparison between the two bonding agents, no significant differences in microleakage score were observed (p>0.05). Further, it was concluded that in order to evaluate microleakage scores appropriately, it was necessary for specimens to be subjected to thermocycling of 10,000 times or more.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of four experilnental prinlers on bond strength between a self-curing luting agent and silver-palladiuln-gold alloy. The experinlental primers were in lnixed solutions of a thiouracil primer (Metaltite) and a phosphate primer (Epricord, PM, PE, or PP), which were designated as Metaltite/Epricord,Metaltite/PM, Metaltite/PE, and Metaltite/PP respectively. Three prilners (Metal Primer II, V-Primer, and Alloy Primer) were also prepared as controls. Allunina-blasted metal alloys 'were bonded with acrylic rods. After 5,000 thermocycles, the maximu111 shear bond strength was obtained with Metaltite/PE (27.8±2.4 MPa) and Metaltite/Epricord (27.6± 5.9 MPa), followed by Metaltite/PP, Alloy Prilner, Metaltite, Metaltite/PM, Metal Primer II, V-Primer, and Epricord. PE, PM, and PP showed the lowest bond strength. Results of this study revealed that the cOlnbined use of a thiouracil Inonomer and a phosphate lnonomer ilnproved adhesive bonding. In this light, clinicians should pay attention to the types of functional monomers dissolved in a primer when fabricating resin-bonded prostheses.

This paper reviews our recent studies on radical photopolymerization initiators, which are used in the design of light-curing dental adhesives and resin composites, by collating information of related studies from original scientific papers, reviews, and patent literature. The photopolymerization reactivities of acylphosphine oxide (APO) and bisacylphosphine oxide (BAPO) derivatives, and D,L-camphorquinone (CQ)/tertiary amine were investigated, and no significant differences in degree of conversion (DC) were found between BAPO and CQ/amine system (p>0.05). In addition, a novel 7,7-dimethyl-2,3-dioxobicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-1-carbonyldiphenyl phosphine oxide (DOHC-DPPO=CQ-APO) was synthesized and its ultraviolet and visible (UV-VIS) spectral behavior was investigated. CQ-APO possessed two maximum absorption wavelengths (λmax) at 350–500 nm [372 nm (from APO group) and 475 nm (from CQ moiety)], and CQ-APO-containing resins exhibited good photopolymerization reactivity, excellent color tone, relaxed operation time, and high mechanical strength. It was also found that a newly synthesized, water-soluble photoinitiator (APO-Na) improved adhesion to ground dentin.
