In this paper, we propose multiple-supply-voltages aware high-level synthesis algorithm for <i>HDR architectures</i> which realizes high-speed and high-efficient circuits. We propose three new techniques: <i>virtual area estimation</i>, <i>virtual area adaptation</i>, and <i>floor-planning-directed huddling</i>, and integrate them into our HDR architecture synthesis algorithm. Virtual area estimation/adaptation effectively estimates a huddle area by gradually reducing it during iterations, which improves the convergence of our algorithm. Floorplanning-directed huddling determines huddle composition very effectively by performing floorplanning and functional unit assignment inside huddles simultaneously. Experimental results show that our algorithm achieves about 29% run-time-saving compared with the conventional algorithms, and obtains a solution which cannot be obtained by our original algorithm even if a very tight clock constraint is given.

This paper is concerned with real-time incremental face recognition for home service robots. For this purpose, we use an Incremental Tensor Subspace Analysis (ITSA) to enroll and recognize the user's face through low-price robot camera when robot performs the real-time customized service in home environments. Furthermore, we perform face recognition based on face database constructed in u-robot test bed environments in ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute). Thus it can be used as a core technique in conjunction with Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) that can naturally interact between human and robots in home robot applications. The experimental results on face database reveal that the presented method shows a good performance in comparison with the well-known methods in distant-varying environments.

The propagation threshold power through a white tight-buffered single-mode optical fiber was found to be 3% less than that through a transparent acrylate-coated fiber. This is because the white pigments in the buffer layer backscatter the visible emission that pumps a fiber fuse. Namely, the backscattered light is absorbed by the thermal decomposition product SiO in the glass melt surrounding the traveling plasma. This self-pumping effect was revealed by comparing the void trains left in fiber segments coated with white or black oil paint. This threshold reduction compels us to re-examine the power tolerance design of optical networks and fiber fuse terminators.

In this paper a reduced size microstrip log periodic dipole antenna with top loading of elements is presented. In many situations, the lateral size of the LPDA antenna has to be reduced to fit the antenna into the installation space. In this work, top loaded element structure is adopted to reduce the size of the dipole elements. Each straight dipole element of the LPDA antenna is turned into a T-shaped element whose total length is equal to that of the original straight dipole element length, resulting in a dipole length that is half that of the original dipole element, i.e. lateral size of the LPDA has been reduced by more than half. This procedure can be repeated to reduce the dipole element length even further, by placing a double T-shaped element on top of each other, resulting in an overall length that is almost 46% of the original dipole element length. Comparison of the reduced sized LPDA with that of the original LPDA shows that the VSWR (≤ 2.0) results of the reduced size LPDA are lower than those of the straight elements over the 2.3-8GHz frequency band. For the three LPDA structures results of peak gain shows that on average over the frequency band, 2-8GHz, gain varies between 5-6dBi. Simulation and measured results on VSWR, radiation pattern and gain at the various frequencies are provided.

A new wideband Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) receiver based on split spectrum processing (SSP) technique is presented. In this receiver, the spectrum of the input signal is first decomposed into a number of sub-bands, and then independently down-converted to baseband for filtering and demodulation. This technique, which is characterized by the number of sub-bands and their bandwidths, reduces the sampling rate of analog-to-digital converter (ADC) by the sub-band bandwidth compared to conventional OFDM system. Analysis and simulation of the phase noise show that the new receiver exhibits the same bit error rate (BER) performance as the conventional OFDM system. Also, the Chebyshev II filter gives rise to superior BER performance compared to Butterworth, Chebyshev I, Elliptic, and Bessel filters. Interestingly, the traditional time domain synchronization algorithms can be employed for the new SSP receiver with only minor modifications.

We describe a high speed adder that employs a carry-lookahead structure and uses low-voltage-swing pass-transistor-based Manchester carry chain. This structure is implemented in 65nm technology and accommodates 15GHz clock frequency at the slowest corner which is 20% higher than the highest speed in the previously studied high-speed structures.

We propose an efficient tag collection algorithm utilizing empty time slots in active RFID systems. In the proposed tag collection algorithm, the reader recognizes the existence of empty time slots via carrier sensing, and utilizes the redundant empty time slots to transmit sleep commands to the tags collected, resulting in performance improvement for tag collection. The simulation results show that the proposed tag collection algorithm can reduce the average tag collection time by 12.28%, 12.30%, and 13.31%, for the framed slotted aloha with the fixed 128 time slots and 256 time slots, and the dynamic framed slotted aloha anticollision protocols, respectively.
