AES has been one of the most popular encryption and decryption algorithms for data security applications. At the same time, data randomization (or “homogeneous”) technology was applied to reduce the bit error rate (BER) of MLC and TLC flash memory. Here, AES algorithm was found efficient to replace the orthogonal polynomials which normally carry out homogeneous function by scrambling data. This paper put forward a novel hardware architecture providing both homogeneous and data encryption/decryption functions concurrently by an embedded AES hardware engine while getting rid of randomization engine with Linear Feedback Shift Register (LFSR). It made a flash controller simple and reduced the die size because the independent homogeneous hard engine is no longer necessary for a flash memory system, in which AES security algorithm embedded. Finally a SSD controller designed in this architecture was silicon proven.

The pixels in the conventional image sensors are placed at lattice positions, and this causes the jaggies at the edge of the slant line we perceive, which is hard to resolve by pixel size reduction. The author has been proposing the method of reducing the jaggies effect by arranging the photo diode at pseudorandom positions, with keeping the lattice arrangement of pixel boundaries that are compatible with the conventional image sensor architecture. In this paper, the author discusses the design of CMOS image sensor with pseudorandom pixel placement, as well as the preliminary evaluation of the fabricated CMOS image sensor.

This letter proposes a simpler and more efficient circuit scheme than the conventional current fed full bridge converter. In the proposed circuit, an auxiliary resonant capacitor is added to the conventional circuit to eliminate the adverse effects of leakage inductance of the transformer on the circuit operation, and at the same time, soft switching is achieved. As a result, switching losses were reduced and the efficiency was improved by approximately 4.7% compared to the conventional method, which was confirmed on LTspice. First, the basic structure of the proposed circuit is shown, followed by the principle of operation. Next, the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed method are presented. Finally, we compare the proposed method with the conventional method.

This paper considers three pairs of circuit schemes for RF rectification. Given finite available power from RF source and load resistance, we formulate DC output power and efficiency of each scheme. Resultant formulas find that load-to-source resistance ratio R/r dominates the circuit performance. Maximum efficiency reaches 81.1% at R/r=1 for single-diode half wave rectifiers. It also reaches 92.3% for multiple-diode full wave ones at R/r=1.347 in bridge with capacitor, 0.742 in bridge with inductor, 5.389 in double-voltage, and 0.1854 in double-current topologies.

Hardware trojans(HT) is one of the main threats for hardware security, especially attacks on General-Purpose Registers(GPRs) of processors. This paper presented a novel method to detect HT induced attacks by comparing the states of GPRs with an embedded reference model in real time. Firstly, the instruction sequence was realigned with four principles. Secondly, based on the realigned instruction stream, a reference model for GPRs was built. Finally, HT induced attacks on GPRs can be detected by comparing the expected GPRs’ state from the reference model with the sampled GPRs’ state from processors. We integrated this method into a RISC-V core of PULpino and investigated the feasibility with different programs. The experimental results showed that all the randomly inserted HT attacks can be detected in real time with the latency of two clock cycles.

Eye tracking, or detecting where the user is looking at, is expected as a new type of user interfaces, with including the phenomenon of rapid eye movement, so called saccade. However, real-time tracking of saccade is difficult with the conventional image processing systems for their long processing time and latency against the speed of saccade. In this paper, we describe the design of the CMOS image sensor for eye tracking with high speed and low latency capability, as well as its evaluation results.

A high-sensitive CMOS photosensor based on a pulse frequency modulation (PFM) scheme is presented. We propose and demonstrate the high-sensitive PFM photosensor, whose output frequency is proportionate to the incident light intensity, that utilizes MOS interface-trap charge pumping (ITCP) as a frequency-controlled ultra-low current. The proposed pixel sensor consists of only 4 transistors: a transistor as an ultra-low current source; a sense amplifier transistor; a selection transistor; and, a reset transistor. The prototype device is fabricated using 0.6-µm standard CMOS technology. High sensitivity 4.0 × 105Hz/(W·m-2), which is larger than two orders of magnitude compared to previous works, was obtained.

In this letter, we proposed a highly linear mixer-first receiver with a discrete-step attenuator (DSA) and a noise-shaping TIA. A resistor-reuse technique is devoted to improving linearity and attenuation flatness of the DSA with frequency independance, and a negative impedance chopping method is proposed to reduce the in-band noise of the TIA. Measurement results show that the receiver achieves >13dBm IIP3 and in-band noise floor has been depressed by 4dB, with only consuming 2.82mW under 1.3V supply.

In this paper, a 32-bit RISC-V microcontroller in a 65-nm Silicon-On-Thin-BOX (SOTB) chip is presented. The system is developed based on the VexRiscv Central Processing Unit (CPU) with the Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) extensions of RV32IM. Besides the core processor, the System-on-Chip (SoC) contains 8KB of boot ROM, 64KB of on-chip memory, UART controller, SPI controller, timer, and GPIOs for LEDs and switches. The 8KB of boot ROM has 7KB of hard-code in combinational logics and 1KB of a stack in SRAM. The proposed SoC performs the Dhrystone and Coremark benchmarks with the results of 1.27 DMIPS/MHz and 2.4 Coremark/MHz, respectively. The layout occupies 1.32-mm2 of die area, which equivalents to 349,061 of NAND2 gate-counts. The 65-nm SOTB process is chosen not only because of its low-power feature but also because of the back-gate biasing technique that allows us to control the microcontroller to favor the low-power or the high-performance operations. The measurement results show that the highest operating frequency of 156-MHz is achieved at 1.2-V supply voltage (VDD) with +1.6-V back-gate bias voltage (VBB). The best power density of 33.4-µW/MHz is reached at 0.5-V VDD with +0.8-V VBB. The least current leakage of 3-nA is retrieved at 0.5-V VDD with -2.0-V VBB.

An innovative concept of noninvasive sensor device has been proposed and successfully demonstrated, which makes direction detections and intensity measurements for electric fields be drastically simplified and agile. Its primal feature is a unique geometry, with the simplicity of Columbus’ egg, where an ammeter and optical readout are internally contained in virtual-shorted parallel plates. While its electromagnetic principle for accurate sensing has been confirmed, its function to promptly image directions and distributions of electric fields has been demonstrated combining its aerial scan with a bulb-shuttered photographic camera.

A virtual zero power (VZP) method was used to reduce the power consumption of hybrid magnetic bearings (HMBs) in left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). The mathematics of the HMB system in LVAD was established, and the stability was analyzed with a proportional-derivative (PD) controller. The unbalanced forces on the rotor can be identified by the output voltage of the PD controller, together with the negative stiffness of the permanent magnet, and the rotor can be suspended at a point where the rotor’s reluctant force is at a minimum to lower power consumption. Experiments were conducted to measure the power consumption of the magnetic bearing at different rotational speeds, and different trajectories of the rotor were demonstrated. The results showed HMB using VZP consumed 0.28W averagely at 1000-4000rpm in the LVAD.

A 2.58THz detector based on plasma-wave theory proposed by Dyakonov and Shur was designed and fabricated in 55nm standard CMOS process. Each detector consists of a filter patch antenna and a metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect-transistor (MOSFET). We design a filter antenna to receive the terahertz signal, and the output of detector is extracted by a phase-locked amplifier. The antenna generates filtering function by adding two pairs of branches to the feeding lines. The frequency selection function of high spectral resolution detector proposed in this paper is mainly realized by filtering antenna. According to the test results and HFSS simulation results, the proposed filter antenna is feasible. The detector can achieve a room-temperature maximum responsivity (RV) of 67.2V/W. Our results show that CMOS terahertz detectors have potential applications in the imaging field.

This paper presents a half-selected robust 12T bitcell with built-in write-assist for sub-threshold SRAM. The proposed 12T bitcell is robust enough in bit-interleaving architecture to enhance soft-error immunity combined with error correction code. The read stability of the proposed bitcell is improved by read decoupled. The writability is improved by data-dependent supply-cutoff write-assist. Both row and column f-selected bitcells can hold data stably during write operations. Simulation results based on a standard 55nm CMOS technology show that the read static noise margin of the proposed bitcell is 16.13x as that of the conventional 6T bitcell. Moreover, the write failure in the sub-threshold region is eliminated. In addition, the leakage consumption is improved by 15.7% compared with 6T bitcell.

Breathing monitoring is important in the health and sports area. In this paper, a wireless self-powered health system for breathing monitoring is designed using the piezoelectric devices and buckled n-shape and L-shape structure. A cotton belt is used to tie the system to the chest and deliver the force stimulated by the chest cavity enlargement caused by the breathing, which can be collected and measured based on the three-dimension n-shape and L-shape structure. Three hard lead zirconate titanate (PZT) patches are used as the energy source to support the sensing circuit and soft piezoelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) works as the sensor to measure the stretching force, which are placed at the gap between the 3D-printed n-shape and L-shape structure, making the measurement more precise. Breathing signal comparison between commercially used battery-powered respiration belts shows the efficiency of the piezoelectric devices on the accuracy, precision, and recall factors. The system is also used in practical experiments and it is found that the intense actions have a similar peak-peak value of breathing wavefront but a much higher frequency of respiration. This design can be used in health monitoring and sports training, which also shows the potential of data acquisition for disease diagnosis applications.

Edge intelligence (EI), as a combination of artificial intelligence (AI) and internet of things (IoT), is the key to realize an interconnected world of everything. EI needs to process the data collected by edge devices locally. For edge devices with insufficient computing power, a near data computing (NDC) system can provide local computing capability by adding a co-processing unit near the memory. NDC systems are extensively studied focused on the optimization of the hardware architecture but lack of universal and transparent system support. Meanwhile, we notice that non-volatile memory (NVM) plays an important role in edge intermittent computing. In this article, we propose a novel in-memory processing file system (IMPFS) based on NVM to provide general support for NDC system running on edge devices. IMPFS uses standard file system interfaces and is optimized for NVM and AI application management. To verify the IMPFS, a prototype system is designed. The results showed that the IMPFS can not only provide universal support for EI but also further improve the processing speed by reducing the redundant software overhead.

We propose and demonstrate the lateral integration of a VCSEL and a slow-light VCSEL amplifier with in-plane resonant wavelength detuning design, enabling the unidirectional coupling and stable single-mode operation with good beam quality. The modelling and simulation result of the wavelength detuning and unidirectional coupling is shown. A slow light laterally coupled from the VCSEL to the amplifier can be amplified uniformly when the amplifier is pumped above the threshold current. We also present the experimental data of the beam quality, output power and spectrum. The measured data show the increased single-mode output power with good beam quality in comparison with conventional VCSELs. A record single-mode power (40 mW) with narrow beam divergence (<0.06°) is presented.

A three-level gate driver and a power Gallium Nitride High Electron Mobility Transistors (GaN HEMTs) were monolithically integrated to prevent false turn-on, reduce reverse conduction loss and realize fast switching. The proposed gate driver works with an external and an integrated capacitor which supply negative gate voltage. Monolithic integration makes power conversion circuits smaller in size and improves circuit performance due to its lower parasitics. The integrated MIM (Metal-Insulator-Metal) capacitor improves dv/dt immunity. Measurement results showed that the proposed GaN-IC realized fast switching speed of 3.7ns ton and 6.1ns toff, and improved efficiency of an SR buck-converter.

We demonstrate an accurate remote measurement of heartbeats using an ultra-wideband radar system. Although most conventional systems use either continuous waves or impulse-radio systems for remote vital monitoring, continuous waves suffer from non-stationary clutters, while impulse-radio systems cannot detect heartbeats. Our ultra-wideband radar system has a moderate fractional bandwidth intermediate of these systems, resulting in both the suppression of clutters and high sensitivity in measuring accurate heart rates even in a dynamic environment. A simultaneous measurement of the vital signal of a participant employing the ultra-wideband radar and electrocardiography reveals the high accuracy of the radar system in measuring the heart rate varying over time.

In this paper, we quantified the permittivity and permeability of ferrite-particle-containing silicone using a perturbation method with a harmonic resonator and investigated whether the modified silicone can be used as a material for fabricating heating vessels for microwave ovens. The material constant varied depending on the compounding ratio of the obtained ferrite. From our simulation results using a microwave oven model, we confirmed that the container was well heated and that the food in the container was heated by the remaining energy.

A novel dual-band miniaturized frequency selective surface adopting fractal elements is proposed. The proposed structure is composed of interconnected four SZ curves of second generation. Such a design is to provide two pass-bands with stable performance, the first band resonates at S-band with a center frequency of 3.02GHz and the second band is at C-band centered at 7.22GHz. In addition, the compact structure employing the space filling curve can further reduce the size of the FSS. The dual-band FSS achieves better miniaturization compared with other single layer FSS in previous literature, the dimension of the unit cell is only 0.072λ×0.072λ, where λ represents the free space wavelength at first resonant frequency. Furthermore, the proposed FSS exhibits great resonance stability for different polarizations and incidence angles. Both the simulation and measurement verify the stable performance of the FSS.
