The transparent communication board (TCB) is a communication tool that is commonly employed by individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Both the 50-letters and flick type TCB are prevalent in Japan. The purpose of this case study was to compare and investigate the speed of letter transmission and the subjective user impression associated with the use of the 50-letters and flick type TCB in ALS patients. The study included four ALS patients and four caregivers, who acted as communication partners. Participants used the 50-letters and flick type TCB at intervals ranging from one week to 90 days. They received video instructions on how to use each type of TCB and tried to transmit a total of 18 Japanese letters. We measured the time taken to transmit each word and the number of errors. Additionally, the participants were asked to complete a questionnaire assessing their subjective impressions of the TCB. Compared with the 50-letters type, the ALS patients and their partners tended to make fewer errors and preferred the flick type of TCB. However, the 50-letters type was easier to use to communicate if the patient and partner were not familiar with the flick type sequence. Our data suggest that the age of the patient and their partner, as well as the amount of experience using a smartphone, should be considered when choosing a TCB.

This study analyses the luthier's philosophy on traditional violin making through a literature review and online survey to investigate the sources of the affective value produced by the violin. Violins have existed for more than five centuries without changing their traditional artisan philosophy and design, without being taken in by industrial advances such as alternative materials and greater efficiency that have accompanied many technological innovations since the industrial revolution. The luthier's philosophy of artisanship, which has been passed down is considered key to these violins, known for their acoustic performance and appearance over time due to the use of natural materials and traditional techniques by skilled artisans. The results of this study suggest that these traditional violins have a traditional philosophy that affirms the individual character of the musical instrument and is conscious of its growth after it is worked.

Our research is to recognize the tea leaves opening stage the Deep Learning image analysis. Since the quality of tea depends on the stage of the growth, it is therefore important to predict the leaf opening period. Relative amounts of amino acid and theanine has significant effect on the quality of tea. High quality plucked tea leaves contain the maximum level of theanine. However, over time theanine changes to catechin an astringent ingredient in the sunlight. This means the content of the “Umami” ingredients is reduced. The hypothesis in this study is Umami’s level changes over time can be predicted by image analysis. Image analysis is performed using the Continuous Wavelet Decomposition (CWD), and the Deep Learning (DCGAN, PCA, SAE, and LSTM) as methods. We combine these in certain order and use them in analysis. The advantage of with combine 5 methods grades “fuzzy” tea photo images, difficult to classify accurately, than with one single method, as spectrum analysis, AKAZE and so on. By developing an iPhone application that feed back the analysis predict the optimal picking time, it can contribute to the tea quality prediction of large tea farm a large-scale.

<p>We have been developing an EEG-based cognitive brain-machine interface (BMI) system, Neurocommunicator® to support patients with severe motor deficits in communication. This system uses an event-related potential (ERP) to decode the message (pictogram) that users want to convey. In addition to the communication aid, it would be expected for the Neurocommunicator to improve the QOL of the users in a variety of daily-life situations. In this study, we focused on the brain activity that reflected the decision-making process of customers. We used the virtual shopping task as a model of daily shopping, in which a variety of product images were used as visual stimuli for the sequential delayed matching-to-sample paradigm. We recorded EEG data from 12 normal subjects and examined the ERPs in two conditions; the subject selected one (target) out of 8 products (nontargets) either "to BUY" (positive condition) or "NOT to BUY" (negative condition). We observed the strong ERPs not only to the target "to BUY" but also to the target "NOT to BUY" compared to the nontarget. The magnitude of the response and the decoding accuracy of the former were, however, greater than the latter. These results suggest that the ERP to a product is enhanced by the intention to buy it, and that the ERP- based Neurocommunicator has potential to become a "body-free" shopping tool for patients with severe motor deficits as well as a real-time neuromarketing/neuroconsulting tool for any person.</p>

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) has been used for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients with severe communication difficulties. We planned a brief educational course for students in multiple healthcare disciplines. In 2018 we held 2 sessions more than 5 months apart. We set out to test a preliminary hypothesis that there would be a difference between novice students and an experienced group of students who had already attended the session once, especially in terms of their ease in managing the AAC. We compared data from the second training session between 6 students (experienced group) who had attended the same session twice in March and August, and 6 new students (novice group) who had never experienced AAC before August. We measured the number of letters obtained by each AAC method and the participants’ perceived burden before/after using AAC evaluated by a visual analog scale (VAS). We also asked the participants to write comments after using AAC. We compared the number of letters and the subjective burden between the two groups. Free-text comments were processed by text-mining software (KH Coder®). The burden of the Flick type of communication board was lower for the experienced group (p=0.034). Comparison of Difficulty/Ease of the two groups with KH Coder® suggested less difficulty in the experienced group (p=0.002). Text-mining of the free comments suggested some difference on Difficulty/Ease between the 2 groups with and without the experience of the educational course.

Remote work has spread rapidly since the pandemic of COVID-19, making it more convenient to work from home for a large number of people. However, excessive work concentration can lead to serious health damage such as mental stress if not monitored. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based scheme aimed at identifying the different stress levels caused by concentration while working on a PC. We perform a set of experimental tests designed to provoke different levels of stress, namely low, medium, high, and no stress. Dedicated wearable devices are used to collect Heart Rate Variability (HRV), Galvanic Skin Reaction (GSR), and Breath Chest Force (BCF) to train and test a CNN-based stress classifier. The result shows the ability of the proposed CNN model to correctly classify stress levels achieving an accuracy of 99.08%.

The motivation of Japanese primary pupils to learn English as a foreign language (EFL) was examined in a pilot study of Japanese sixth form students (aged 11-12 years). The main aim is to verify the hypothesis that Japanese primary pupils learn EFL under a clear understanding of second language (L2) instrumentality, and examine whether the latest conceptual framework of L2 instrumentality can be applied to their EFL learning. The pupils completed a questionnaire that included 39 question items about different L2 motivational variables: integrativeness, and prevention- and promotion- driven instrumentality. The results were obtained based on factor analyses to examine how related L2 motivational variables are identified. Findings indicate that a clear distinction is drawn between integrativeness and instrumentality in learning EFL and that an explicit notion of L2 instrumentality is held among Japanese primary EFL pupils, based on the conceptual frameworks of L2 motivation. In particular, their L2 instrumentality substantiates that prevention-driven and promotion-driven instrumentality are distinct constructs within the conceptual framework of the L2 Motivational Self System (L2MSS) : significantly, these two internal constructs were identified as distinctive types by the participating pupils.

Japan has a hospitality culture called “Omotenashi”. In Japan’s classical literature, there are many songs and stories about fragrances. In addition to burning incense in Buddhism rituals, Japanese created a unique world called “Kodo”. This indicates that the Japanese have a deep history with scents. Regarding the scent of hospitality, it is necessary to consider the preference of the scent when greeting people. In a previous study, we conducted a questionnaire survey of 60 Japanese males and females using 5 different fragrances and 5 different note types and examined the results. In this experiment, we conducted a questionnaire survey of 58 Japanese males and females based on the SD method using 6 different perfumes and 2 different note types. We examined the results in this and the previous study in order to understand preferences for fragrances that conjure a sense of hospitality. We conducted factor analysis and extracted factors representing the feeling of “Omotenashi” from the perfumes. We analyzed the scent of each perfume based on these factors. Moreover, it was suggested that the impressions made by of perfume is different from the note types representing attributes of perfume. From the results of this experiment, as a result of examining the scent factors that bring about a feeling of hospitality, perfumes with a fresh, pleasant and graceful sensation were suggested to be the most effective in bringing about this feeling. In this paper, we reported on our research of fragrances that evoke in “Omotenashi”, or Japanese hospitality. In the future, we will continue to research the sensibilities that perfumes give to people and also propose a unique “perfume method (Kosuido)” for the purpose of researching the design of perfume.

High quality but low price is a fundamental factor for commodities, however, tangible and intangible added value is the most important factor for luxury products. To pursue added value of luxury fashion brands and products, this paper shed light online platform service dealing with a large amount of products, and aims to reveal the actual situation of the luxury fashion market. The importance of online platform service as a data source is discussed in terms of network externality required for modern services. This paper proposes sales amount analysis and analyzed 308,154 luxury fashion items. The results show availability of category extension in luxury brands to raise the sales. Integrity of high sales amount products is also discussed on brand equity fascinating consumers.

This paper reports the results of two separate experiments on the effects of multisensory stimulation on working capacity and stress reduction. The first experiment, employing auditory stimulation and lighting stimulation, revealed that multisensory stimulation, a combination of green light, and the sound of a murmuring stream, had a greater stress-reduction effect than single-sensory stimulation. The second experiment, which employed smell and lighting stimulation, revealed that a peppermint scent reinforced working capacity during arithmetic calculation. Green light combined with a peppermint scent also supported working capacity. Such multisensory interaction cannot be accounted for as merely the cumulative effect of a combination of single-sensory stimuli.

Previous studies suggested that spoilers might increase the enjoyment of novels. However, the problem of spoilers has not been sufficiently clarified. The objective of our work is to clarify the effect of comic spoilers and to apply clarified knowledge for applications. In our past work, we constructed a spoiler dataset and investigated the spoilers’ effect by changing the spoiler timing for readers. However, in the past work, we could not clarify the characteristics of spoilers. In this work, we clarified that spoilers reduced the interest in continuing reading the comics and analyzed the characteristics of spoilers by using the dataset. Then, we considered how to construct a comic spoiler dataset and investigated how to determine the spoiling pages automatically using image processing, and character detection and so on.

The aim of this research is to develop a search system for comics based on the personalities of appearing characters. For this purpose, this paper describes the classification of characters using egograms, which are used to classify personalities. In the proposed method, texts that express a comic book character's personality are acquired from web resources, and semantic vectors are allocated based on these texts using egograms. The resulting egogram pattern is used to estimate typical properties. Our experiment reveals that the performance accuracy of this classification method is 55.0%.
