We developed a prototype of simple virtual reality (VR) system as a support tool to overcome fear of heights. The system consists of one personal computer, one projector and a hemisphere dome screen with the diameter of 1 m. It is a dome-screen type VR system because it makes little burden both to a medical doctor (or a counselor) and to a client. The dome screen is a low-cost type made milky-white plastic. We adopted rear projection using only one projector and could get an image with an effective field of vision. We can use a picture or a movie took from a personal-type digital camera. As for the correction of image distortion, we made the software tool originally. Therefore, the running cost is also low and the operation is easy. As the result of evaluation experiment, we confirmed that the system made a feeling of devotion with little sense of incongruity. It seems to show the possibility that the simple VR system can be utilized as a medical service tool of the spread type.

The mechanism for the activation of cerebral function through singing and listening music was investigated. In this research, the effect of singing and listening to music on cerebral function and the effects on autonomic nerve systems were clarified. The fluctuation of oxyHb was analyzed for quantifying the active state of cerebral function. The CSI to investigate the activation level of sympathetic nerve and the CVI to investigate the activation level of parasympathetic nerve were analyzed for quantifying the fluctuation of autonomic nerve systems. The result of experiment showed that the oxyHb increased during the music tasks and the oxyHb decreased during the rest. Additionally, it was shown that the sympathetic nerve became predominant in singing music. In addition to this, we proposed a new evaluation index quantifying the active status of cerebral function using the absolute value of oxyHb and the differential value of oxyHb. By use of this evaluation index, the effectiveness of relaxation with listening music and relaxation without music on the active status of cerebral function were investigated. In these investigations, the effectiveness of music therapy was increased when the parasympathetic nerve became predominant efficiently

The prevention of injuries during parasports is important for safety and to enjoy sports. However, in wheelchair rugby, there are few systematic studies on trauma precautions because of the differences in the physical function level of parasports athletes and the small number of players overall. We have proposed defensive motions to minimize injuries to the front and sides by analyzing videos of falls, a simulation using a multi-body model, and evaluating the injury to the head and upper limbs. By classifying the range of motion and muscular strength into three categories, the difference in disabilities was expressed using a multi-body model. The index, ULIC, was proposed to evaluate injuries to the upper limbs. It is calculated from the maximum moment value of the bones, using a simplified cylindrical model. The head injury criteria (HIC) and ULIC made it possible to evaluate the extent of injury by classification into one of four categories, depending on the presence or absence of injuries in the above regions. Furthermore, defensive actions not resulting in serious injuries and matching the difference between the degree of disability and fall, by predicting the potential injury to the head and upper limbs using the indexes, were proposed.

The number of patients with chronic respiratory deficiency, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or Sleep Apnea syndrome, is increasing. For patients with comparatively serious symptoms, the Non-invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation (NPPV) may be prescribed. However, pressure necrosis or anaclisis could affect treatment by occurring at the contact area of nasal mask. In response to this problem, the construction of a simulation environment can be applied. This personal simulation model was created based on these measurement results and the interpolation results using the Free-form-deformation technique. A fundamental numerical analysis was performed, and Von Mises stress distribution was shown when the NPPV nasal mask made contact with the face. It is shown that the maximum stress can be decreased by 19.4% compared with the cases of standard mask. In conclusion, by using this system, the shape of a nasal mask suitable for each patient can be determined.

The biomechanical effects of an intramedullary nail system for treating subtrochanteric fracture during bone healing is still unclear. The aim of this study was to analyze the stress conditions of a subtrochanteric fracture model implanted with an intramedullary nail system and augmentation plate under stretching exercise. Two displacement conditions assuming stretching exercise were considered. The finite element (FE) model of a subject undergoing surgery with the intramedullary nail system and augmentation plate was constructed based on post-operative computed tomography images. A 1-mm-thick callus was set in the gaps positioned at the fracture line. Bone healing was defined as a change in the Young's modulus of the callus. The orced displacements from the medial and lateral sides were applied to the distal part of the FE model, respectively. In the initial stage of bone healing, there was a noticeable difference between stress distributions of the callus under displacements from the medial and lateral sides. The compressive stress was widely distributed in the callus by the displacement from the lateral side. However, the tensional stress in the callus was increased by displacement from the medial side. Stretching exercise, such as displacement from medial direction, carries a risk of non-union.

The purpose of this research is to demonstrate the influence of odor to physiological reaction when a subject’s experience is taken into consideration as a factor. Ten normal Japanese adult male (22.1 ± 1.1 years, mean ± SD) were enrolled. A mixture of spices including coriander, fenugreek, and cumin by the same ratio was used as the standard sample. Commercially available curry powder was used as the excellent sample. Three salivary biomarkers such as amylase, orexin, and β-endorphin were measured during baseline, inhalation and post-inhalation periods. Our results indicated that (i) change of the salivary orexin levels by inhalarion of spice was agreed with the result of subjective evaluation, (ii) the excellent sample showed more remarkable changes in physiology reaction than that of the standard sample. It was thought that a functional spice which it not only backs up delicacy, but have an effect which pulls out sensitivity may be designed.
