A small aperture or antenna can confine electromagnetic radiation to dimensions far smaller than the wavelength. Scanning such a structure in close proximity to an object can yield microscopic images with correspondingly high resolution. The benefit of using microwaves and millimeter-waves in scanning near-field microscopy lies in the promise of new types of material contrast. A good example is the mapping of electronic transport properties. In this review an overview of scanning near-field microwave, millimeter-wave, and submillimeter-wave microscopy is presented, a millimeter-wave microscope system using a slit-type probe is described in detail, and the application of this microscope for the visualization of photo-excited free carriers in a silicon substrate is demonstrated.

Principle and medical applications of photoacoustic diagnosis are reviewed. Photoacoustic diagnosis involves both advantages of optical and ultrasonic measurements, by which deep-located tissue can be diagnosed or imaged with a high spatial resolution. Applications to diagnosis of pigmented skin diseases, real-time monitoring of laser cyclophotocoagulation, detection of early cancer, functional brain imaging are described.

On the basis of our research, this report describes the recent progress on mirrorless laser action induced by photonic band-gaps (PBGs) of chiral liquid crystals (CLCs). Liquid crystal compounds with molecular chirality self-organize the supramolecular helical structure by their twisting power. Therefore, we can observe the selective reflection band regarding as 1-D PBG. When the fluorescent dye-doped CLC is optically excited with a linearly polarized beam, the laser emission appears at the chiral 1-D PBG edge (s) of CLC hosts. The optically pumped laser emission shows circularly polarized characteristic, even though the excitation beam is linearly polarized. Applying voltages to the optically pumped CLC cells enables reversible switching of the laser action as a result of changes in the supramolecular helical structure of CLC host. Moreover, we succeed in the phototunable laser emission from the photosensitive CLC.

The technology of generating terahertz electromagnetic pulses from various devices and materials by exciting them with ultrashort laser pulses has recently made a remarkable progress. This technology has been applied to spectroscopy and imaging. In this paper, the various methods of spectroscopy, imaging and their application to various samples are described.

A practical OCT imaging system for ophthalmology became commercially available only five years after the first demonstration of OCT. OCT is thus an epoch-making technique in optics. In such development of the practical OCT system, however, Japanese researchers have been played second fiddle to the research groups in United States, although both basic concept and patent for OCT were proposed for the first time by Japanese researchers. Very recently, the domestic research activities for OCT increased remarkably, because it is necessary to develop many key technologies before OCT is widely applied for clinical diagnoses in the near future. At the present stage, OCT has several shortcomings and technical problems to be solved before its wide application for clinical diagnoses. In this paper, the description is focused on the present status of OCT in Japan as well as development of key technologies for the future OCT.

In recent broadband photonic network system, high speed optical data transmission is required. Electrooptic (EO) polymers are attractive because of their large nonlinearity, fast response time and ease of device fabrication. Therefore the EO polymers are expected for the application of ultra-high speed EO switch and/or wide bandwidth EO modulator, both of which will be used in future photonic network. In this report, recent progress of EO polymers and their application to waveguide type devices are described.

The colloidal crystallization of fine particles is a phenomenon of great interest in connection with the research on the fabrication of photonic crystals. This paper describes a newly proposed method, in which self-arrangement and self-assembly of particles are generated under radiation force, i.e. gradient and scattering forces, and capillary force, respectively. The hexagonal structure in the Fourier-transformed patterns of 2D colloidal crystals shows that the triangular lattice structure is successfully fabricated by the proposed method. This paper is concerned with the principle of newly proposed method, capturing and self-arranging particles by radiation pressure, self-assembling particles by the desiccation process, the enlarging of colloid crystal, and the verification of the triangular lattice structure.
