We report here on the theoretical interpretation of results related to compression experiments performed on the University of Rochester's four beam laser system. The experimental results show volume reduction on the order of 300 with compressed electron temperatures on the order of 1 KeV, critical surface temperatures also about 1 KeV and a density plateau in the vicinity of the critical surface. The theoretical work focusses on the effect of absorption time history, of reduced flux limits and of variation of the suprathermal electron distribution on the replication of these experiments.

Modulator integrated lightsources are among the essential components of today's DWDM systems because of their compactness, high-speed operation, low frequency chirp and high cost efficiency. Attosecond extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray pulses are generated through high-order harmonic generation, a highly non-linear and non-perturbative phenomenon. Nonlinear optical effects and electron-electron interaction play an essential role in various applications of attosecond pulses. The best way to study atomic dynamics under such circumstances theoretically is direct numerical simulation of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE). The present article introduces how to model the high-field and ultrafast phenomena on the basis of TDSE, and reviews recent theoretical findings on attosecond pulse generation and attosecond phenomena, peculiar to the time scale of electronic motion inside an atom.

Photo-acoustic (PA) signals induced by Kr F laser irradiations on to the optical thin layers have been measured to detect the small absorptions and the damage thresholds of dielectric coatings. Extremely low absorption with the extinction coefficient of 10-4 is detectable for the single-layer coatings with optical thickness of 1.5 wavelength at 248nm. The pre-damage detections have been studied with the assistance of laser scattering damage detection techniques. Thechanges of the slope and the variation of the PA signals have been observed at the irradiation of Kr F laser of lower fluence compared with the damage thresholdsby microscopic measurements. The pre-damage thresholds detected by the PA signaldetection agreed well with the laser scattering method for low index fluoridecoatings. Typical features of the laser induced damages related to the linear absorption and the refractive index will be discussed about the coating materials forshort wavelength lasers.

Germanium, aluminum, and stainless-steel plates were irradiated with a pulsed CO2-laser beam (10.6μm) focused to be 0.1 mm in diameter, and resulting optical acoustic signals were measured with a PZT piezoelectric element. Results indicate that deposits on the surface and internal damage can be detected from the signal magnitude and phase angle, effectively by using repetitivefrequencies more than 100 Hz.

Surface plasmons are electromagnetic waves localized and propoagating along metal-dielectric interfaces. They can be excited by a p-polarized light in an attenuated total reflection geometry. The surface plasmon resonance can be used in laser microscopy that provides two dimensional maps of refractive index and/or thickness of samples with very high sensitivity. Spatial light modulators using the surface plasmon resonance are also described.

Inspection and failure analysis of large-scale integrated circuits (LSI) have become a critical issue, as there is an increasing demand for quality and reliability in LSIs. Recently, we have proposed a laser THz emission microscope (LTEM) for inspecting electrical failures in LSIs, which detects the THz emission from LSIs by scanning them with femtosecond laser pulses. We successfully obtained the THz emission image of MOSFETs without bias voltage. We also measured MOSFETs in which the connection lines from the electrodes to the p-n junctions were interrupted, and found that the polarity of the temporal waveform of the THz emission from the pn junction in damaged MOSFETs has the opposite sign compared to that in normal MOSFETs. This result indicates that the LTEM can be used for the inspection of MOSFETs without bias voltage, which is attractive for the testing of semiconductor devices during the manufacturing process.

Technique for synthesis of the ZnO nanowires by Nanoparticle-Assisted Pulsed-Laser Deposition (NAPLD) and the characterization of their optical property are described. Vertically-aligned ZnO nanowires were successfully grown on sapphire substrates by NAPLD without any catalyst. The surface density of the nanowires on the substrate was controlled by changing the laser irradiation conditions, such as an energy and a repetition rate. When a nanowire was excited by the third harmonic of a Q-switched Nd: YAG laser, the stimulated emission due to a micro-cavity effect in single nanowire was observed with a lasing threshold of about 400 kW/cm2, indicating high crystalinity of ZnO nanowires.
