Self-induced transparency (SIT) is a kind of coherent transient phenomena in two-level atomic system. The optical pulse with an area that is an integer multiple of 2π, which causes SIT in an absorber, is stable and a kind of soliton. Thus SIT is expected to be useful in pulse compression and pulse shaping. In this paper, we discuss some problems in experiments of SIT and surveys the experimental results of SIT. It is also described the recent experimental results of coherent nonlinear pulse propagation in BiI3 crystal using tunable sub-picosecond pulses.

We developed a wafer-level integration process for multiple-wavelength laser diodes. This integration process allows highly accurate and proximal alignment of emission spots, as well as high mass-productivity. Using this process, we fabricated blue/red and red/infrared two-wavelength laser diodes. In these laser diodes, the distance between two emission spots was approximately 3μm. Furthermore we fabricated blue/red/infrared three-wavelength laser diode whose emission spots were aligned within 10μm distance. Such a short spot distance allows the optical components of the pickup to be substantially simplified.

In this article, the basic principle of photoacoustic microscope (PAM) and imaging was introduced paying the special attention to its detection schemes. The experimental apparatus and applications of PAM were reviewed. Depth profiling using PAM in the nondestructive inspection of semiconductor device was discussed. The principle of spectroscopic analysis method by integration over PAM image measured with respect chemical reagent concentraion or pollen number was also discussed. Furthermore, photoacoustic imaging technique including photoacoustic tomography applied to biological imaging was reviewed.

A coherent terahertz (THz) wave can be generated by difference frequency generation (DFG) using nonlinear optical crystals. DFG has a potential advantage of wide tunability achieved by a proper selection of the DFG crystal and input wavelengths. In this paper, we present the latest progress in widely tunable THz-wave generation from 0.3 to 6.5 THz using DAST crystals. As a dual-wavelength light source for DFG, we employed a KTP optical parametric oscillator in the 1100-1200 nm range pumped at 532 nm. Using a thick DAST crystal more than 1 mm, maximun THz-frequency was limited to 0.6 THz. However, using thin DAST crystals less than 0.3 mm, a peak power of more than 10 mW were successfully generated at 2.5 and 4.3 THz. In spite of the present nanosecond-pulse operation, a compact system of widely tunable THz-waves, including a diode-pumped Q switched Nd:YAG laser and a pyroelectric detector, could be useful in THz-imaging and spectroscopic applications.

An internal-mirror He-Ne (λ=633 nm) laser tube is mounted in a duralumin box which is thermally connected to other box attached thermo-elements, via heat pipes. The output power and the frequency of the laser are stabilized by two simple method. First, the total back beam intensity detected with a silicon photodiode is fed to a heater wound around the laser tube. The output stability of±0.15% and the frequency stability of ±1.3×10-8 are obtained over a period of 10 min or longer. Second, the laser tube temperature detected with a thermistor is fed to a heater. The output stability of ×0.3% and the frequency stability of ±4.5×10-8 are obtained over a period of 10 min or longer. This method does not use the laser beam intensity, thus the optical-feedback effect does not affect the laser stabilization.

Three-dimensional multi-layered optical storage is one of the most promising methods that break the limitation of recording density in optical storage. It stores the bit information onto the multilayered recording planes inside the thick recording medium and realizes the tremendous large recording capacity. This paper describes the recording/reading principles, the systems, and the materials suitable for three-dimensional multi-layered memory. We also present the experimental results that using photochromic organic materials and rhodamine-B-doped and Au(III)-doped PMMA for recording medium.
