Lie Down in Darkness (1951), William Styron's first novel, is about a young girl from Virginia, who suffers familial conflicts and kills herself in New York. Some critics call it a Faulknerian or a Southern novel, but it is actually about an ordinary girl who wants desperately to be understood, and Styron wrote it in the awareness of "the mid-century in the never-endingness of war," which indicates it is modern rather than simply Southern.

The popularity of Gone with the Wind is attributed to many causes. This article discusses how the novel is women-centered and how (the lack of) maternity is stressed (and condemned) in the heroine's life. This, it is argued, is one reason why the novel is so popular.

より魅力的な英語教育をめざして近年、埼玉女子短期大学で行ってきたさまざまな試みを総括した。キーワードは、より学習者主体の教育という目標とインターネットをはじめとする新しい教育機器や非標準的な教材・教授スタイルの援用である。具体的には、Eメールによる「教室」のないライティング指導、「協調的学習」と発表プロジェクトの促進、ティームティーチングであり、それぞれの到達点と今後の課題を展望した。
